Army Birthday Celebration Summer Concert Series By Armida Hoffman
Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation would like to invite you to the Rockin’ Army Birthday Celebration Summer Concert Series presenting Phillip Phillips with special guests Andy Grammer and Vertical Horizon on June 13 at Godman Army Airfield. Phillip Phillips, who is the season 11 “American Idol” winner, debuted his platinum-plus selling album, “The World from the Side of the Moon” at #4 on the Billboard Top 200. This album featured the 5x platinum smash hit “Home.” Phillips has found great success with his soulful vocals, and his distinctive mixture of acoustic and jam-oriented rock. Phillips mentioned, “I grew up on musicians and bands from the ‘60s and ’70s, stuff like Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin,” and attributes Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan as his inspiration for his guitar work. Phillips, having the
Also being featured at the summer concert is Vertical Horizon. This slick pop/rock band was founded in the early 1990s where Matt Scannell and Keith Kane first performed at Georgetown University at local parties and coffee shops. After signing with RCA Records, they released their breakout album “Everything You Want” which sold more than 2 million copies. Following a short hiatus, the band came back together to release an additional album “Burning the Day” under its own label Outfall Records. “Burning the Day” was critically acclaimed, and produced two hot AC radio singles, “Save Me from Myself,” and “The Lucky One.”
Mark Wicker, Chief of the Community Recreation Division and the Event Coordinator, notes, “This year’s concert will celebrate the Army’s birthday and will feature a lineup of all American rock/pop artists that are current and on the charts. We look forward to welcoming the surrounding communities to showcase these artists, and our Army pride.” Expedient and secure entrance onto Fort Knox will be available to concertgoers through Chaffee Gate only. A photo ID is required for those 16 and older; guests who will be riding motorcycles must wear protective gear that includes a helmet. RESILIENCY On and Off the Field shows up in their performance on and off the playing field. The mental methods used lead to more optimistic, committed, self-controlled, confident students. They simply make much better choices. Their problem solving skills improve drastically. They don’t go blindly into their events; they see what they want and take the necessary steps to get there.
By Brenda Weatherington “Resiliency.” We hear this word so often that it may have become common. Yet, it is one of the most important attributes that Military Families and children can have; a facet of life that is active and moving at all times, and most certainly not common. It is a deeply rooted skill that makes life more livable.
Another coach believes so much in the program that he wishes it began much earlier in students’ lives. He believes many pitfalls could be avoided, and student mindfulness and success would sky rocket. The perseverance that is developed moves students through obstacles and into more desirable outcomes. The coping skills that students create lend themselves to mental toughness, and this supports adaptations through the rough spots. They learn to weather the storm, and they learn how to be team players.
Several years ago, an initiative began at Fort Knox High School (FKHS) to invigorate and awaken student athletes to the resiliency that already lies within them. The Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) program, rooted in sports and positive psychology, began with select coaches and teams to increase and improve, mental and physical performance. Coaches at FKHS believe in this program’s success and its ability to help students pay attention. Mindfulness and intention are skills that the students develop. They believe that this practice helps them to deal with adversity, not just in sports, but with everything they do. They learn to visualize; they set their minds eye on what they want to see happen and they develop strategies to get there effectively. Put simply the process supports the rewiring of the brain. One student says it helped him steer away from the negative and channel the positive. He says one of their mottos is to “hunt the good stuff.” Each student creates their own rituals to wipe clean a poor performance so that they can align with their desired outcome. The use of these skills helps students calm themselves and center on the tasks at hand. Every student interviewed agreed that the skills that they have learned through the CSF2 program transfers into their daily life and supports better performance in all that they do. One coach said he has watched students transform – “They go from caterpillars to butterflies.” He says students’ attitudes change, and it

The marriage of sports, performance and positive psychology is not just warm fuzzy thoughts. Outcomes are measurable, and performance can be quantified with the effective administration of this program. This is one of the reasons coaches and students like this work. They hunt the good, and they find it. The program has been so successful that 32 new high schools will begin this program in the coming years. To learn more about CSF2 and its programming, contact Michael “Moon” Mullins at (502) 624-3222. Moon is the Training Center Manager and is the driving force behind this program.

Fathers Matter This Father’s Day and Every Day By Viviane Arnold Most people can agree that having an involved father has obvious benefits to children. Many of us have read newspapers or seen television programs that talk about the benefits of fathers being involved in raising a child by providing love, support and comfort. We can probably also agree that as a working dad, it can be difficult to find time for Family. Dad, did you know that finding time for your Family could actually bring you more success at work? Fathers who care for their children’s intellectual development and their adolescent’s social development are more likely to advance in their occupation. Being involved in their Family members’ lives helps fathers better cope with stressful situations and everyday hassles. It makes them feel confident they have a lot to offer others, in terms of their job skills, parenting skills and social relationships.
Rewards for the whole Family come from having loving and nurturing relationships among Family members. Being involved and caring for not only the child, but for the Family, can bring greater harmony and fewer arguments. Involved fathering is related to better communications between fathers and Family members, a greater sense of commitment to the Family and less troubling conflict with teenage children. Even if you have been raising your Family for years, new ages and different stages can bring difficult challenges to the Family. You can talk about your concerns,t and ask questions about babies, young children and Family relationships by utilizing the following programs: • •
•
• How about the benefits for children? Researchers have been studying this issue for decades. For instance children whose fathers are involved in their lives score higher on cognitive tests than those with relatively uninvolved fathers. Improved cognitive abilities are associated with higher educational achievement. Actually, fathers who are involved in their children’s schools and academic achievement, regardless of their own educational level, are increasing the chances that their child will graduate from high school, perhaps go to vocational school, or even college. Father involvement is associated with positive child characteristics such as empathy, self-esteem, self-control, psychological well-being, social competence and life skills. It is also related to lower rates of teen violence, delinquency and other problems with the law.

Military Family Life Counselors provide broad range support to Military children and youth, Family members, and other adults who support them. Issues addressed include: school adjustment, deployment and separation, reunion adjustment, sibling and parent-child communication, behavioral concerns, fear, grief and loss. (2002) Fathers contributions to children peer relationships.
Along the same lines, the involvement of fathers who don’t live in the same home as their child seem to be particularly important. Children who grow up with non-resident fathers that stay very involved in their life tend to get higher grades than those without involved fathers. They tend to have fewer behavioral problems and better social skills. They can make friends easier and handle difficult social situations better. In fact, even when not living with their children, fathers who were actively involved with children kept them from getting involved in problematic behaviors as teens.
