Before you decide to get on that bike this summer, there are some safety measures you need to understand first. It is important to remember that a bicycle is a vehicle, and when safety precautions are ignored, it can lead to serious injury. The first step to great bike safety is wearing a properly fitted helmet. You want it to be snug and the right size. Helmets protect your brain in a result of a crash and can save your life. Next, you are going to want to check that your bike is the correct size for you. To do this, you are going to stand over your bicycle and measure the inches between you and the top tube bar. It should be 1 to 2 inches for a road bike and 3 to 4 inches if a mountain bicycle. Also, the seat height should be moved to allow a small bend at the knee when the leg is fully extended. After you have ensured the bike is the right size for you, be sure to check that the tires are properly inflated and the brakes are in working condition. Be sure to also wear bright colors such as neon green if you will be biking around traffic. It is important to also avoid riding at night. Low visibility can result in life-threatening accidents. If you must ride at night, add reflectors and lights to your bicycle to increase your visibility. Lastly, a major concern when biking is the risk of dehydration. You are going to want to keep a water bottle on you at all times when enjoying a nice bike path. Severe dehydration can lead to dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, muscle cramps, and headaches. Experiencing any of these when biking can result in serious injuries. To help stay hydrated, drink a big glass of water before leaving for your trail. You can also add electrolyte-enhanced drink mixes to your water bottle for that extra kick. Don't forget that you can also eat your water! Fresh fruits such as watermelon, strawberries, and cantaloupe are amazing snacks that will aid in your hydration. Biking is great fun, but it also requires proper safety measures. Follow all of the tips above to ensure your weekend bike rides are filled with positive memories only.

The mission of the USO is to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home, and country throughout their service to the nation. As an extension of the USO mission, USO Experience Fort Campbell, which runs from June 13 to August 15 this year, eliminates barriers for service members and military family members to experience new activities together. By providing - for free - activities that are too expensive for some budgets or that are typically inaccessible, USO Experience allows participants to find exciting hobbies, to connect over shared experiences, and to enjoy exclusive opportunities. The USO has been supporting the military and their families for 80 years. While the mission of the USO is carried out daily, the general public does not often have the chance to witness the impact of the USO's programs and activities. There are a handful of opportunities in USO Experience where the public can do just that, and we look forward to sharing a glimpse of a “USO Experience” with our civilian community! Activities in 2021 include Scuba, paddle boarding, climbing, mini-golf, canoeing, camping, yoga, cave tours, virtual gaming, and more!
The virtual gaming tournaments and events are opportunities for servicemembers and the local civilian community to connect, have fun, and compete against each other for prizes. The highest-profile events will even be streamed through our USO Twitch account, engaging with our USO supporters and patriotic Americans across the globe. Registration for USO Experience events for the military will open soon, and information will primarily flow through the USO Fort Campbell Facebook page, with occasional messaging on the Instagram page (usofortcampbellnashville). Civilians interested in engaging with USO Experience should email Kari Moore, Executive Director for USO Fort Campbell and Nashville, at kmooore@uso.org. 28
7th Annual Boot Display They might be our fallen heroes, but they were someone else’s heroes first, as spouses, children and siblings. That’s why Survivor Outreach Services, or SOS, will host the 7th Annual Boot Display, to honor the same survivors whose spouses, children and siblings lost their lives in the line of duty. The Boot Display is a part of the Week of the Eagles, and will be held June 17-27 from 7am - 4pm at the Division Headquarters lawn. Approximately 8000 boots will be on display. Each boot will represent a fallen service member who has died on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001, regardless of cause, branch of service or location of loss. The boots have been collected from military service members across Fort Campbell and abroad. Each honors the memories and sacrifices of brave men and women who gave their lives while serving their country. In addition SOS will hold Youth in the Community. This is a Youth Boot Display Day and “planting” of the flags on the boots. This will be held on June 16 from 11:30am-4pm. Youth will be given the opportunity to plant an American flag next to the boot. SOS is open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm and is located at 5001 Screaming Eagle Drive. For more information, call SOS at (270) 412-8909, or visit their website at http://home.army.mil./campbell/index.php/acs/sos
