A Time of Picnics and Sun Safety By Kelly Morgan

School has been out for a while now. We have become accustomed to the summertime weather, students have forgotten what having homework was like, and we notice ourselves spending a lot more time outside. At this point, most of us would say we have gotten into our “summer routine.” Whether this means reading a book on the patio, spending time at the outdoor water park, Camp Carlson, Lindsey Golf Course or French Shooting Club, life just seems a little better this time of year. A favorite pastime for Families of all types during the summer months is picnicking and July happens to be National Picnic Month. There is something so relaxing and enjoyable about packing a lunch or dinner and a blanket, and heading outdoors with loved ones. The best part about going on a picnic is that it can be done very cheaply. Remember to consider food items that can be prepared ahead of time so all you have to do is enjoy yourself once you arrive. A few suggestions include pre-made salads, pre-made sandwiches, fruit and vegetables, chips, and cookies. It is also important to remember to pack food that can be easily transported, and foods that will not spoil or melt. Fort Knox Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation has several picnic areas available for your convenience. Camp Carlson, located just five minutes from Fort Knox, has four Reserved Picnic Areas with water and electric hookup available. Areas 1, 2 and 3 may be rented daily for $25 each. Picnic area 4 is the largest area with two double shelters located at the head of Carlson Lake. This area may be rented for $50 daily. You may also rent all four areas together for $100 daily. These picnic areas have barbecue grills, shelters, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. To make reservations, please call (502) 634-4836. The Outdoor Water Park, located on Telephone Exchange Road behind Devers Teen Center, also has picnic tables available on a first-come, firstserved basis. This offers the perfect opportunity to not only picnic, but cool off in the water as well. In the bliss of summer, it is easy to get caught up in the fun and forget the importance of protecting the skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Now, more than ever, it is vital to remember the serious, long term effects of these damaging rays. The skin is the body’s largest organ, but is oftentimes treated as the least important. Harmful rays not only lead to skin cancer, but also eye problems, age spots, a weakened immune system, wrinkles and leathery skin. Along with National Picnic Month, July is also UV Safety Month, which serves as a good reminder to always be safe and aware when in the sun. A few helpful hints include: wearing protective clothing to cover the skin, applying broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoiding sunburn and staying in the shade - especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. While out on a picnic with friends or family, be mindful of the UV rays, and try to find a place under a pavilion or tree to not only keep your skin safe, but to also keep you cool.

WELCOME TO FORT KNOX By Armida Hoffman July is the peak season for Permanent Change of Station, or as most of us know it, PCS. With the excitement of moving to Fort Knox comes the uncertainty of what this impressive post has to offer. Fort Knox Family and Moral Welfare and Recreation would like to put your worries at ease and welcome you to Fort Knox. While heading to the main gates of Fort Knox, you notice the remarkable Gold Depository on your left. You have officially arrived to your new duty station, but where do you begin? What will the children do for the rest of the summer? Does MWR offer any recreational activities? Do I have to go off post to find a place to eat, or are there restaurants on post? These are all great questions that can be answered with the click of a mouse. For the most up to date information about Fort Knox you can start off by visiting www.knoxmwr.com. There, you will discover what types of programs Child, Youth & School Services can provide for children of all ages. CYSS programs are developed to support Military Families and Civilian personnel on Fort Knox through positive interactions with adults and peers in safe and supervised environments where children can grow and thrive.

Home Alone By Jennifer Dent Summer can be a challenging time of year for many parents with school-aged children. With the increasing numbers of parents in the workforce, numerous Families don’t have the luxury of staying home with their kids while they are out of school. That leaves several of us juggling schedules and trying to organize short-term childcare. There are various daycare options available nowadays, but a lot of parents decide to allow their children to stay home alone. Before considering this option, make sure that both you and your children are prepared. First, determine whether your kids are mature enough. Ask yourself these questions: • Are they trustworthy and responsible? • Can they understand and follow rules and instructions well? • Can they handle unexpected situations well? • Are they able to use everyday household items, like the microwave, television, and telephone? All children mature differently, so it ultimately comes down to your judgment about what they are ready for.

• • • • •

Have a well-supplied first aid kit available. Stock up on food and snacks they can prepare themselves. Childproof your home – be sure to remove or lock up anything that can be a risk to your children like weapons, alcohol, medications, etc. Make sure your child is busy – make a schedule of things to do while you are away. Check in multiple times while you are away. This will help alleviate many concerns on your end, and help your child feel more secure.

To help prepare Families for the big step of children staying home alone, Fort Knox Child, Youth & School Services offers “I’m Alone” workshops. According to CYSS, This program is designed to teach middle school and teen youth to be responsible, trustworthy, competent, capable, and safe while staying home alone. The adult workshop portion of this class helps parents assess their children’s knowledge and skills to enable them to stay home alone. For more information about these workshops, contact CYSS (502) 624-6703 or SKIES (502) 624-6615/7882. Fort Knox also offers a Babysitting Certification Training program through the American Red Cross (502) 624-2163 or through Devers Middle School/Teen Center (502) 624-6442. This program provides training for babysitters providing care in the child’s or babysitter’s home. The “I’m Alone” workshop is a prerequisite for the Babysitting class for students who are 14 and under.

Next, speak to them about staying home alone. Make sure they are comfortable about it. This can be exciting to some children, but scary for others, so confidence is key. Once you determine that they are ready to stay home alone, stage a practice run and role-play different situations to help them prepare for anything that might happen. This can help ease any stress they, or you, may feel about the big day. Here are a few helpful tips to keep things sailing smoothly: • Set firm ground rules. • Practice first aid. • Practice an emergency plan. • Have an emergency contact list accessible – include 9-1-1, parents work and cell numbers, parents location information, numbers for neighbors and/or anyone else that can be trusted. knoxmwr.com

“The Insider Threat” Brad Taylor By Michael Steinmacher

With a plot torn from the pages of today’s news, New York Times Bestselling author Brad Taylor will bring high octane thrills to his discussion and signing of “The Insider Threat” on Tuesday, July 7, 12 p.m., at Barr Memorial Library. A limited number of complimentary copies of “The Insider Threat” will be available to Soldiers in uniform at the event. “The Insider Threat,” the eighth book in Taylor’s Pike Logan series, concerns an ISIS threat, which, if perpetrated, will have implications throughout the Western World. Standing in their way is Pike Logan and the Task Force, a counter-terrorism strike force sanctioned at the highest level of U.S. government, but operating outside of the law. If the threats and the military elements of Taylor’s books ring true to audiences, it is not coincidence. Taylor brings a 21 year career as a now retired U.S. Army Special Operations Lieutenant Colonel to the page. Although he says that his books are based upon his experiences, he’s quick to point out that his fictional characters represent the heroes of today’s armed forces at large who fight to protect America. “Pike Logan,” Taylor says, “is a fictional character, but he is real. He exists in greater numbers than the public is aware; not as many as we need, but probably more than people believe.” Taylor notes on his website, that he writes realistically, but he’s not divulging details of how a special operations officer would conduct himself. He says, “given the equipment and circumstances, the operator would act exactly the way I’ve described, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I’m accurately describing real-world tactics, techniques, or procedures. Some things are secret for

a reason, and I’m not going to help the enemy by writing about them, fiction or otherwise.” Pike Logan was introduced in 2011’s “One Rough Man”. That book was followed by “All Necessary Force”, “Enemy of Mine”, “The Widow’s Strike”, “The Polaris Protocol”, “Days of Rage” and “No Fortunate Son”. “The Call Sign”, “Gut Instinct”, “Black Flag” and “The Dig” are eBooks set in Logan’s universe. The ninth book in the series, “The Forgotten Soldier”, is scheduled for publication later this year. Critics have compared Taylor’s books to the work of Brad Thor and the late Robert Ludlum. Taylor, born on Okinawa, Japan, is a University of Texas graduate. Commissioned as second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry, he served more than 21 years, including commands in 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment – Delta. His operations were conducted in Iraq, Afghanistan and other classified locations. Taylor holds a Masters of Science in Defense Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, with a concentration in Irregular Warfare. In addition to his writing, he serves as a security consultant on asymmetric threats, and provides commentary on the topic and other military topics for news networks such as CNN, NBC, and Fox News. Copies of “The Insider Threat” and other titles will be available for sale at the event. For further information, please contact the Library at (502) 624-1232.
