Hey everyone! I hope you all are staying cool and hydrated this summer. Summer is always such a memorable time for families and friends. Some of my best childhood memories were made during these few months. In this issue we are bringing you some great Netflix and Hulu shows that are definitely worth checking out. Who doesn’t love binge watching a new show? I know I do. We also have some great barbeque joints that are guaranteed to make your mouth water! Speaking of mouthwatering, did you hear that the USO is hosting their annual cupcake wars this month? If not, you should check it out. I hope July treats all of you fantastically.

Streaming websites like Netflix and Hulu are taking the world by storm. They are allowing users to have the luxury of television, without the high cost and lengthy contracts that came with cable in years past. They also allow users to binge watch their favorite shows without the constant commercial interruptions and having to wait for a new episode once a week. Whether you are searching for a new show to watch on your downtime with friends and family, or if you’re needing a show to binge watch during a deployment, there seems to be a show for everybody. So, we reached out to a few military spouses and asked them what the best binge worthy shows on Netflix and Hulu are right now, and this was their responses.
“If you are needing a show to keep you busy for a while, I recommend Shameless. It has been around for years, and the seasons keep getting better and better. It is one of my all-time favorite shows.” – Maria from Georgia Shameless follows a family of six kids and their messed up drunk of a father. The oldest child Fiona must step up and raise the rest of the family on her own. The story follows them on their journey to survive as they steal food and money to make it, while their father continues to mooch off them. Viewers all tend to fall in love with the fabulously dysfunctional Gallagher family.
“If anyone hasn’t seen Dexter yet, you need to. Like, right now. It is so great.” -Sierra from California By day, Dexter Morgan is just an average mild-mannered blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police. But at night, he turns into a serial killer with a thirst for blood. The catch is, he only targets other murderers. This HBO show ran from 2006-2013, and all the seasons are on Netflix for your binge-watching pleasure. 5
“I really enjoy ‘Stranger Things’. I watched both seasons in about 2-3 days. I am so excited for the next season to come out .I will more than likely watch it all in a few days.” – Carrie from New York Stranger Things follows four children growing up in the ’80s who find out that their town has some supernatural secrets. The story starts with Will, one of the story’s main characters, going missing after a night of playing Dungeons and Dragons with his pals. Murder, mystery, and some strange things occur on the quest to find Will and bring him home. Two seasons are currently streaming on Netflix, with a third on the way very soon.
Does Nailed It! count? It just makes me smile and I can’t wait for the next season to come out. My kids love to watch it with me too.” - Mandy from Idaho Home bakers from across America gather to recreate edible masterpieces for a $10,000 prize. The catch is, they are all terrible bakers, and the creations always come out horrible looking. It's like a train wreck that you can’t look away from.
“I feel like everyone has seen The Office because it is a classic, but if not, it has to be on everyone’s binge-watching list.” – Amanda from California This series follows a group of typical office workers. The average workday is filled with ego clashes, inappropriate behavior, and humor. The paper company is in the hands of branch manager Michael Scott, played by Steve Carrell, and it was his breakout role.
“I just finished binge-watching Riverdale. It seems like it would be corny, but it really sucks you in. Everyone needs to give it a shot.” - Kayla from North Carolina This series follows Archie Andrews and all his pals. It unveils life in the small town of Riverdale, as well as explores the darkness hidden behind its seemingly perfect image. There are murders and mysteries at every turn. It is an American teen drama television series based on all the characters from the classic Archie Comics.
“Grey’s Anatomy is amazing. It is on both Netflix and Hulu, I believe. It’s still on the air, so you won’t run out of episodes to watch for a very long time.” - Casey from Tennessee Grey’s Anatomy is a medical based drama centered around Meredith Grey. Meredith is an aspiring surgeon, and the daughter to one of the most remarkable surgeons, Dr. Ellis Grey. The series follows Meredith as she maneuvers through professional and personal challenges. She also meets many fellow surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital along the way.
“I just started on ‘You’ not too long ago and my husband made me start it over so he could watch it with me.” – Jessica from New Jersey ‘You’ is an American psychological thriller television series. The story of ‘You’ follows Joe Goldberg, a New York bookstore manager who falls in love with a customer named Guinevere Beck and quickly becomes obsessed with her. Viewers are sucked in and surprised by the extreme lengths that Joe is willing to go for “love”. “My husband and I are currently watching Breaking Bad together. I would recommend it for sure.” – Rosa from Florida This show takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico and follows Walter White as he is transformed from an average high school science teacher, into a major drug dealer. He begins this journey by wanting a way to provide for his family after learning he has terminal cancer. But, he gets sucked in and turns into a ruthless player in the local methamphetamine drug trade. “I have been watching Jane the Virgin this week. When my husband is gone, I tend to go through a new show weekly. Jane the Virgin is so corny that it’s funny.” – Katie from Oregon This story follows Jane. She is a young, devout Catholic woman who is a virgin. She discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated by her doctor at a routine checkup. Her life takes a big turn for the unexpected and her story gets crazier and crazier as the seasons go on. 7
There is only one season, but The Umbrella Academy is SOOO good. I watched it all in one day. I couldn’t stop watching.” – Connie from Texas One day in 1989, forty-three babies were born to random women who had shown zero signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven of the babies were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire, who creates The Umbrella Academy. He does this in hope to prepare them to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. There is currently one season on Netflix, and season 2 is set to release sometime next year. “On Hulu, I just finished The Act. It is such a sad but interesting story to follow. It made me do a lot of research on the real case that the show is based off of.”
- Samantha from Utah Based on true events, the series follows the story of Gypsy Blanchard. She is confined to her wheelchair due to an illness and has many medical issues. The twist is, her mother Dee Dee has successfully deceived not only Gypsy but also medical professionals and friends into thinking her perfectly healthy child was ill. “The Handmaid’s Tale is extremely good. I like shows that make me think a little bit, and it definitely does.”
– Sarah from California
The Handmaid's Tale takes place in the world of Gilead. It is a totalitarian society that is in what was formerly the United States. Due to different environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Offred, a Handmaid in the Commander’s household and one of the few remaining fertile women, is forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world.
“Castle Rock is a good one to watch when you’re in the mood for something creepy. I love horror movies, so it has been right up my alley.”
- Brooke from Virginia If you are a Stephen King lover, this might be the show for you. Castle Rock is a psychological horror series set in a Stephen King multiverse. It is an original story that brings together a storytelling of King's best-loved works. This mind-blowing saga gets played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. 8
One of the worst things about summer is that painful sunburn that always creeps up on you out of nowhere. The nasty burn can quickly ruin any vacation and cause you to want to hide from the sun for days. Unfortunately, there is no cure for a bad sunburn, but there are definitely a few hacks out there that can help take out some of the redness and sting. So, if you forget the sunscreen one day at the pool, try a few of these out in order to find your new go-to skin saving summer hack. Menthol Shaving Cream This shaving cream hack took over the internet and was shared all over the web. It has had quite a few people trying it out and giving it a big thumbs up. The first step of the process is to apply the shaving cream directly to your burn. Do not rub it in, and just allow it to sit on your skin. Users have said that you can feel the burning feeling being pulled out of your skin as time goes on. After about 30 minutes, wash off the shaving cream. Repeat the process the next day if you still see redness.
Apple Cider Vinegar If you’re needing pain relief in a pinch, run into your kitchen and put some apple cider vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on your skin and feel the instant relief. It is said to work due to the vinegars antiseptic properties that help calm inflammation and itchiness.
Honey This is another great hack that you can use if you’re too burnt to leave the house. Use some raw honey from your pantry, and slather it over your burns. It will be sticky and uncomfortable, but honey’s natural antiseptic properties also help with inflammation and will help heal the damaged skin. Throw on an old shirt that you don’t mind getting dirty in order to keep the stickiness away from your furniture.
Aloe Vera This method is one of the most tried and true methods on the market and has been used for thousands of years. Aloe Vera gel is a natural remedy that comes from Aloe Vera plants. When applied to the skin, it can cause the user instant relief from the burning sensation that comes with a bad sunburn. To step this method up a notch, try freezing your aloe vera gel in an ice tray. It will feel amazing against your tender skin.
Milk or Yogurt This hack is said to work due to the natural probiotics that can be found in these dairy treats. They will soothe your achy burn, but also help heal the damaged layer of skin. Allow the milk or yogurt to sit on your skin for 10 minutes before gently dabbing it off. Always remember to gently wash your body and change your clothes over the next few days so that your skin can heal faster.
11
Hopefully, you will not need these hacks, but if you do, many of them are only a grocery store away. So, test out a few and see if they work for you and your family members. Remember to wear loose fitting clothing and stay indoors until your sunburn goes away. It is also a great idea to drink tons of water. You can essentially rehydrate your skin from the inside out. Keep your favorite brand of sunscreen on you at all time this summer to ensure you won’t be needing these hacks again any time soon.
July is one of the hottest months of the year here at Fort Campbell, and you can definitely feel it when you step out your front door. With temperatures reaching the 90s, it is very important to know all the signs and symptoms of heat related ailments. They can happen to anyone, no matter their age, size, gender, or even species (so keep an eye on your pets too.) Always be on the lookout for these issues if you or your family will be in high temperatures for more than 30 minutes at a time.
Heatstroke Heatstroke is the most serious heat injury. It happens when someone’s internal body temperature reaches over 104 degrees. Heatstroke requires emergency treatment. If left untreated, it can quickly cause damage to your brain, heart, kidneys and muscles. The longer medical treatment is delayed, the worse the situation gets and can lead to serious complications or death. Signs and symptoms of heatstroke include high body temperature, confusion, agitation, slurred speech, irritability, nausea, vomiting, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, flushed skin, and a pounding headache. If you suspect heatstroke in yourself or a loved one, call 911 immediately. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, take the person into a shaded and cool area and begin cooling them down. Take off excess clothes and cool them off with some cool water.
Heat Exhaustion Heat exhaustion is less severe than heatstroke, but still needs to be taken very seriously. It also happens when someone’s body temperature begins to get too high. Without treatment, heat exhaustion can quickly turn into the life-threatening heatstroke. Possible heat exhaustion signs and symptoms are cool, moist skin even when in the heat, heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, feeling weak, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. If you suspect someone may be suffering from heat exhaustion, find a cool area to move to. Stop all activity and drink some cool water. Call a doctor if symptoms worsen or fail to improve within one hour.
Dehydration It is very easy for someone to get dehydrated in this summer heat. When out swimming or playing around with family, it’s common to forget to pick up a water bottle or two. Dehydration occurs when you sweat out more fluid than you take in. This means your body won’t have enough water to carry out its required functions. Anyone and everyone can easily become dehydrated, but it is especially dangerous in young children. Signs and symptoms of dehydration in everyone young and old include dry mouth, no tears when crying, no wet diapers for three hours, sunken eyes, sunken soft spot on top of skull, irritability, extreme thirst, less frequent urination, dark-colored urine, fatigue, and dizziness. To help prevent dehydration this summer, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat foods high in water. Great examples of this are fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and celery.
Sun Poisoning Sun poisoning happens after receiving a really bad sunburn. Sun poisoning often comes with a bad rash and blisters that form on top of a regular sunburn. Signs and symptoms of sun poisoning are swelling of the affected area, and flu-like symptoms, such as chills, headaches, fever, or nausea. Sun poisoning may not appear for up to a day or longer after your initial burn. For bad blistering, set up an appointment with your doctor so they can asses the damage and follow through with any necessary treatment. For more milder causes, start off with taking a cool shower, drinking plenty of fluids, and resting for a few days. Everyone loves a summer’s day outside, but always remember that there is danger associated with high temperatures and no shade. Constantly drink water and take breaks when needed. Keep an eye out for your family too, because heat related illness can strike at any time. Stay safe out there this July and don’t forget the sunscreen.

It’s the invisible war. A battle fought inside the minds of veteran and active duty service members alike who have been subjected to things no person should have to endure. It rages on for the Family and friends of soldiers who worry every day about the well-being of their loved one and must resume their lives with the same loved ones who return home changed from the scenes of their tours. It’s the invisible war. But it’s a war to be won and winning that war is precisely the mission of SAFE. “There are things that veterans and their families deal with that most of us don’t know about,” said the Rev. Jodi McCullah, who is the co-founder and outgoing executive director for SAFE. “And we’re trying to help them realize that ‘Hey, we get it, we understand. We know how hard it is and we know you’re dealing with things you may not know how to deal with.’” A U.S. Army veteran herself, McCullah helped found SAFE, an acronym for Soldiers And Families Embraced, which began as the Lazarus Project in 2011. They offer counseling free of charge and are confidential so soldiers who seek help do not have to disclose their sessions and risk a negative impact to their military career. McCullah said the program began as a way to fill the gap in mental health programs where long lines and waiting lists had hurt those seeking immediate help from other military-centric clinics. “In 2011, there were a lot of folks who were family members and veterans struggling to find services quickly, so we determined that we needed to help them free of charge and without insurance,” she said. SAFE has served around 1,500 clients since the program’s inception, with around 300 hours of counseling provided each month, according to McCullah. McCullah said the support from the organizations surrounding Fort Campbell has been invaluable to SAFE’s success. “What we found was there was a community of people who were more than willing to help, they just didn’t know how to help. They would say ‘We see that our neighbors are hurting, how can we help?’” she said. “So we were able to say ‘Here’s a way you can help’ and people were very eager to do that.” Though SAFE has enjoyed a degree of success since the creation of the program, McCullah said it is an extremely expensive non-profit organization since it requires employing professionally-trained counselors. To donate to the organization, visit www.SoldiersAndFamiliesEmbraced.org/donate.html. The program provides counseling services to all ages and does not turn anyone away who needs help. To set up an appointment with SAFE, call their main office at 931-591-3241. You can also visit the SAFE website for more information at www.SoldiersAndFamilesEmbraced.org. The SAFE main office is located at 1812 Haynes Street in Clarksville.

Dealing with Deployment by Alex Zapetis
The last few weeks of this deployment have been a little tougher than the ones before. I’ve gotten into my own routine and gotten used to the 5-minute phone calls, but I recently realized my 2-year-old son is going through his own rough patch. I had been warned by other military wives that it’s not unusual for children to act out when Dad was away. Well, I am here to say that it is 100% true. I had assumed that since we are so far into this deployment that we had missed the misbehaving stage, but I was wrong. I guess it really can hit at any time. Its been difficult dealing with a toddler that just won’t listen and is acting out in any way that he can. I’ve been getting overwhelmed and I’ve questioned my parenting, but I have to realize that he is going through a rough time too. He misses his Daddy just like I miss my husband, and he can’t express his emotions the same way that adults can. He’s too young to fully understand Facetime, so it doesn’t help him feel better like it helps me. I just have to keep taking deep breaths and remind myself that it is only temporary, and, in a few months, he will get his Dad back, and it will be all okay again. Before my husband left, I set multiple goals for myself. It was something to keep my mind busy and it gave me something to work towards. I am happy to report I’ve already met a few of those goals with time to spare! It has been a great feeling knowing that I can do anything that I set my mind to and accomplish them. It’s been very liberating. If you are currently going through a deployment, or have one coming up, I highly recommend setting a personal goal or two. You’ll be amazed on how it will help the time pass just a little faster. Once you hit the halfway point in a deployment, time does seem to speed up some. The numbers on the countdown apps start to get smaller and smaller, and that welcome home kiss doesn’t seem so far away. Always remember, this deployment is only temporary, and things will be back to normal in no time. 27

Some Summer days can quickly become a nightmare if it’s too hot or raining outside. Your children, who are used to playing in the yard and swimming, are now stuck in the house. So, what is there for you to do to possibly entertain them? Craft time of course. Every kid loves a good fun craft. Thank you to OneCreativeMommy.com for these unique craft ideas that your children are sure to enjoy.
Mini Paper Kites Materials: Coordinating craft paper (any 8.5 x 11″ paper will work) • Paper straws (2 per kite) String or twine for the kite string (at least 25-30″ long) • Light-weight string, twine or decorative ribbon for the tail of kite • Decorative ribbon scraps • School Glue Stick All-purpose glue • Glitter glue for decorating (optional) • Scissors • Pencil • Ruler Directions: Choose two coordinating papers, and cut them both in half along the longest edge. (The size is now 5.5 x 8.5.) Using a very strong glue stick, cover the back of one sheet with glue and place the other color on top. Smooth the page down, and make sure there are no bubbles. Using a ruler, measure and mark a spot at the top and bottom of your paper at 2.75. Measure and mark the long edges at 3. Use a ruler to connect the four marks and draw lines to make the kite shape. Cut out the kite. Cut a length of twine or string, and tie one end to a paper straw about 2/3 of the way down. Cut the second straw into thirds to get three pieces. (They don’t have to be exactly even. Just eyeball it.) Tie the other end of the twine to the middle of one of the paper straw pieces. This will be the kite handle. Add a drop of glue onto the knot you tied on the handle so that the string won’t slide off of the handle. Place the side of the kite that you want to be the bottom (the side that will hold the paper straw frame) face up on the table. Using a ruler and a pencil, connect the corners to draw a cross. Squeeze a bead of craft glue along the cross. Place the straws into the glue to form your kite frame, and allow the glue to dry for a few minutes. (Try to get the knot of the twine about even with the center of the cross before you press down the straw.) Cut a 20 (or longer) piece of light-weight ribbon or string to make the kite tail. Thread it through the long straw, and add a bead of glue at the top of the straw to keep the string from falling out. Tie a few decorative ribbons to the tail, and allow all glue to dry completely. Optional–Decorate with glitter glue.
Pet Rock Tic-Tac Toe Materials: Small smooth stones • Craft paint in at least two colors • Googly eyes A black bullet-point permanent marker • Paint brushes • Paper plates Cups of water and paper towels for cleaning out the brushes • Bored children Directions: Let each child choose ten rocks, a plate, paintbrush and two colors of paint. Begin by painting five rocks one color and five rocks the other color. (Send the kids to play while the paint dries.) Once the paint is dry, use the sharpie to add details to the bugs, monsters or whatever your kids come up with! Finally, add the eyes. Now all that’s left is to find a game board and get playing. Here are some ideas for boards: A mini chalk board or dry erase board • A paper plate • The sidewalk • A sheet of card stock or paper • Lines in the dirt 31
