Did you know that you can turn your backyard into an amazing summer getaway? With just a little creativity, elbow grease, and imagination, your backyard is waiting to become your summer escape. So what are you waiting for? It is time to give that space a quick and easy makeover. DIY Firepit To begin, you are going to want to pick out the perfect spot for your firepit. Grab a can of spray paint to mark where the outside stones of your fire pit would hit. Step back and view if you like the location and that it is a safe distance away from your house and other objects. Next, use a shovel to dig a circle 6" deep. Once you have dug out your firepit, you will want to pour fine gravel into your hole. Make sure that it is level with the ground. Adding gravel will help your pit drain when it rains. Lastly, it is time to build your fire pit. Using stones that are flat on the sides and can be stacked up is your best option. When you are placing another row of stones, use some masonry adhesive on the bottom of each stone to help keep them together. Repeat this step for your third row. 5

Stock Tank Backyard Pool Blow-up pools can be a pain. They pop and easily blow away. That is why a galvanized steel pool is a great affordable option! Typically used for watering livestock, these large steel tanks can be painted and customized to create a relaxing backyard swim spot. Just stop on by your local tractor supply store and pick one up.

DIY Gravel Patio Wood prices are currently through the roof, but that doesn't mean you can't create a relaxing patio space. Instead of wood, lay out your desired patio space with some gorgeous decorative stones, and build up the outside walls, then fill in the area with gravel, patio chairs, and a colorful umbrella. Don't forget a few steppingstones for that extra pop.

String Lights Your entire backyard can suddenly feel classy and cozy at nighttime just by the use of fairy outdoor lights. They can turn any space into a magical wonderland. Amazon even has some that are solar-powered, so you no longer have to remember to plug them in every night.

Backyard Games If you are wanting to turn your yard into the ultimate hang-out spot, then be sure to create some entertainment for guests. Great options include corn hole boards, horseshoe sets, or volleyball.

The summer months are here and school is out! Now every parent’s question is: What should I do?

When children play outside, parents should always remember to keep them well hydrated. No matter what age, children usually play hard when they are outside. Always have a bottle of water ready for your child to drink from throughout playtime. Sunscreen is another essential part of summer playtime. Generally speaking, using an SPF 15 or higher will protect your little one’s young skin. Insect repellent is also another useful tool to have handy because during twilight hours, bugs can be quite pesky. Helmets are another must on a parent’s safety list. Whether it’s a bike, roller skates, a skateboard, or a scooter, children need head protection. Parents should check helmets regularly for chips or cracks that could be potentially hazardous.

One of the best activities for children is playing outside. Fresh air and exercise keep kids fit and healthy. There are, of course, threats young children face as they frolic at parks and have fun on playgrounds. Read these tips and learn how you can keep your little ones safe while they have fun in the sun this summer. One of the most important safety rules a parent needs to follow is supervision. No matter what age, children should be well-tended. Close adult supervision ensures child safety in countless ways. When children are old enough, the buddy system is another method of child safety, especially for swimming. Never let children into water by themselves; pair younger children with a responsible older child or an adult. You can make the buddy system a non-negotiable rule on family outings. Another thing to keep in mind during the hot summer months is the time of day your children play outdoors. For young children, it is especially important not to play during the hottest part of the day. Generally, children should play outdoors before 10 am and after 4 pm. 11

At the neighborhood playground, parents should keep a few things in mind. If railings or fences look unsteady, try to steer children away from them. When playing on play structures, parents should check for hot surfaces. Metals and even plastics can become extremely hot during the summer months. Check for harmful debris around the playground such as broken glass or insect nests. If you do find anything, warn the children to stay clear of the hazard. Another important safety feature is shade. Children may become overheated in the sun, so make sure there is a tree or shaded area for them to rest. Playing outside can be fun but tiresome as well. When you are at home in the comfort of your own yard, there are still things to remember to keep your children safe. If you have a play structure in your yard, be sure to inspect it regularly for any broken or failing equipment. Look for screws or bolts coming loose. Check for any rust or cracks in the structure, too. If you find damages, tend to them immediately. If you cannot fix the problem, call a professional. The longer you wait, the more dangerous the hazard could become. Parents should always remember to keep their lawns mowed as well. Keeping grass well maintained can

reduce the risk of tripping accidents or run-ins with lurking outdoor creatures. If your family is lucky enough to have a pool, always keep it secured, unless children are allowed in the pool, and they can be well supervised. These safety tips are just some rules that parents should try to remember when their children are playing outdoors. Parents should always remember to supervise their children and be aware of what they do outside, whether it is in their own yard, neighborhood, or at a local park. These safety precautions help to ensure a safe summer full of fun in the sun.

Outdoor Play and Safety Tips • Always supervise children • Use sunscreen to protect young skin • Helmets are a must when children are on wheels • Check for hot surfaces at the playground • Make sure there is no harmful debris at playgrounds • Check your home play structures regularly • Keep your grass well maintained • Lock your pool • Have children use the buddy system • Always keep children well hydrated

Spending much of your free time outside also comes with the unfortunate consequence of bug bites. But, don't let that keep you from turning your backyard into that paradise that you crave. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep those pesky bugs at bay.

Burn Thyme Leaves If you have a campfire going, or just completed your new firepit, toss in some thyme leaves. There have been studies that show burning thyme leaves offers 85 percent protection for 60 to 90 minutes. Load Up on Fans If you are going to be sitting on your back porch or relaxing in a specific area, try and blow a few fans in your direction. Mosquitos and other smaller flying bugs have issues maneuvering in wind. Plant Lavender Bugs hate lavender, which is why you should love it. Plant some lavender around your backyard and grab a leaf or two when you are out and about. Rubbing the leaves on your skin is a quick and easy repellent that will keep you mosquito bite-free. Mosquito Repelling Candles There are cute candles on the market that also double as bug repellent! While hanging out in your yard, light one of the candles and place it on your coffee table. It looks nice and is also super effective. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil This mosquito repellent smells a lot more pleasant than those store-bought mixtures. All you need to do is apply the oil to your body, and you are good to go. This method has also been CDC approved! To create the repellent, all you need to do is mix 1 part lemon eucalyptus oil to 10 parts sunflower oil or witch hazel. Tea Tree Oil This strong-smelling oil will keep those nasty bugs at bay. It is said that just a few drops on your skin, or diffusing it in the air can repel flies, gnats, and mosquitos. Sign me up!
