MGJ(R) Stephen Kildow This month we had the honor of sitting down with Stephen Kildow for our Retiree Spotlight. Stephen began his military career in 1994 when he joined the US Army as an Infantryman. During this chapter of his career, he served 4 years of Active Duty before getting out and going into Active Reserves. This is when he returned home and attended the University of Arkansas. He got involved in the ROTC program while earning his degree, and it gave him the itch to rejoin the service. When he rejoined, he enlisted in Army Transportation Logistics. He served for 16 more years and retired as a Contracting Officer.

When asked about one of his favorite military stories, he shared the following. On his second deployment, he deployed out of Fort Riley. He was in Iraq for only a month when he was notified that he was being interviewed for company command. Stephen had no idea he would get it. To his surprise, his brigade commander had decided that Mr. Kildow was going to do it before even deploying. Kildow shared “The leadership of the company wasn’t great at the time, so it was a rewarding experience getting to step in and help.” We asked Stephen to share his experience transitioning out of the Army and he stated that “It was a rollercoaster”. He revealed that he had another deployment in 2018, and he was going to send in the retirement paperwork when he returned. “When you’ve done it for so long, it was kind of sobering”. He said it was truly a dose of reality when those orders came. Kildow stated he was anxiously trying to figure out what he wanted to do next. “The transition classes and resume building were tedious but helpful. There are so many things going through your head when trying to figure out life after the Army.” Kildow shared. 7

Stephen Kildow is now a successful Realtor here in Clarksville, Tennesee and we asked him about how he found his way to real estate. He said when he retired, his focus was on “finding his next mission and passion in life.” Stephen said his interest in the real estate field started for him in 2005 and 2006 when much of the on-base housing went privatized. At this time, his family moved off post and started doing DIY and home improvements. When they relocated every few years, the family kept buying houses and fixing them up. Stephen stated that he started building his side of the family’s real estate business while still in the Army, where he was a licensed agent in his last year of service. It was slow at first, and very scary, so he strayed away from real estate for a bit. He turned to Bridgestone in Nashville for a more stable income. Unfortunately, about 6 months into his new position, he found himself unhappy. It did not fill the hole of service and sacrifice that the Army left. So he separated from that job after 8 months and jumped back into real estate again. Now, Kildow works with Keller Williams and has been doing it full-time for about a year. He is absolutely loving it, and his whole family are agents. They love helping people and giving back to the community. The Kildow family is made up of his wife Sandra, son Cody, and daughter Jessica. When asked to share why he decided to stay in the area after retiring he said “Clarksville is an amazing community. There is a wide variety of people with different backgrounds.” Stephen was placed on orders for Campbell in 2010 and was here for 2 years. That is when the family originally fell in love with Clarksville and the area. “The people here are amazing.” shared Kildow. “Fort Campbell was the only place that my wife cried when she left.” Stephen got reassigned to Campbell in 2017 and that is when he decided that he wanted to retire here before the Army had a chance to move them again. He always recommends for visitors and new people to the area to check out Strawberry Alley in Downtown Clarksville! It is one of his favorite places in town. In closing, Stephen wanted to share some advice for anyone that is transitioning or has recently transitioned out of the military. “Families tend to fall apart after leaving the Army. Make sure you and your spouse are doing it together and are open and communicating. Retiring and the transition was harder on my family than any deployment that we had gone through. We went to counseling and got help with the struggles. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” 9
