AUGUST 31ST IS NATIONAL DOG DAY! By Adrienne Jazulk Since 2004, National Dog Day has been celebrating the pooches in our lives and shedding light on the plight of dogs waiting to be adopted. Dogs bring comfort and joy to their Families, work tirelessly alongside police officers and Military, guide the blind, and so much more. Animal Advocate and founder of National Dog Day, Colleen Paige, encourages people to consider adopting one of the many “unwanted” dogs who find their way into a shelter for whatever reason.
Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue is extremely rewarding. Not only will you be saving a dog’s life, you’ll be enriching your own life with the love and affection of a grateful creature. More than 2 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States because there is simply not enough space in shelters to house them, and too few people adopting. It is also more affordable to adopt a pet from a shelter than it is to buy one from a store where the puppies may come from puppy mills. Dogs at Hardin County Animal Shelter at 220 Peterson Drive in Elizabethtown can be adopted for $90. This fee includes shots, deworming, rabies shot, spay/neuter, microchip, and county license. At the Meade County Animal Shelter, 516 Hillcrest Drive in Brandenburg, the adoption fee for a dog is only $20, but the dog may or may not be vetted. Some local businesses host low-cost vaccine and wellness clinics for dogs and cats. Orscheln Farm, Home in Radcliff, and Pet Supplies Plus in Elizabethtown have VIP Pet Care clinics once a month. These are walk-in clinics that administer routine vaccines and preventative care tests under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. There is no visit fee; all products and services can be paid for a la carte or as part of a package. The Kentucky Humane Society’s S.N.I.P. Clinic offers similar services and also offers spay and neuter surgery for $74 and $52 respectively. Options like these alleviate some of the cost of taking care of a dog. In honor of National Dog Day, everyone is encouraged to donate $5 to a local shelter. This may not seem like much, but every little bit helps to care for dogs in need. Both Hardin County Animal Shelter and Meade County Animal Shelter also accept donations of dog food, treats, and toys. National Dog Day is the perfect excuse to spoil your pup. A new chew toy or treats would surely get you some extra slobbery kisses. More active and sociable dogs might love a trip to Fort Knox’s Dog Park, located at 722 Ninth Cavalry Regiment Road. It is open 24 hours and is exempt from Fort Knox leash restrictions, so non-aggressive pooches are welcome to run free and enjoy themselves. There are also several trails that run through Fort Knox perfect for an evening walk. September 10th, Falls Landing Water Park will host its annual Pooch Plunge, where dogs can let loose and swim in the pool. This free event has been very popular in the past! Until then, celebrate dogs by considering adopting from a local shelter or making a donation to help dogs in need. knox.armymwr.com
