Geocaching is a fun outdoor activity that has taken the country by storm. Chances are you have heard of geocaching, even if you do not know what it ensues. Use this beautiful summer weather to lace up your boots and try out this awesome family friendly adventure. You will not regret it. To begin, what exactly is geocaching? Geocaching is basically a real-world treasure hunt. It uses GPS devices and apps that will lead you to different kinds of unique objects and treasures. All you need to get started is a device that has GPS and internet capabilities, and an eye for hidden objects. To get started on this awesome quest, you will want to go to geocaching.com/account/join to register. The basic membership is free to join. After your registration is complete, you will then shoot on over to the ‘Hide and Seek a Cache’ page. Here, you will be able to put in your zip code. The website will pull up all of the cool treasures just waiting to be discovered in our area. There are not many rules behind geocaching, but the three cardinal rules are as follows; 1. If you take something from the find, be sure to leave something of equal or greater value in its place. 2. Journal about your find in the cache logbook. This is part of the fun. 3. Log your experience at geocaching.com so others can read about your experience. It is important to not move or relocate caches that you find. If you are unable to locate a cache, then be sure to report it to the website. The original owner of the cache will be alerted and they can replace it if necessary. If you would like to hide your own caches around the Fort Campbell area to find, then it is super easy to do so. The geocaching website has some awesome how to guides on how to get started on that process. Remember to never hide any kind of food, weapons, drugs, or any other dangerous objects in a cache. Small unique knick knacks are recommended, such as figurines. Are you curious as to what you will be looking for when you are out on your hunt? When exploring, you will discover everything from large, clear plastic containers to film canisters to a fake rock with a secret compartment. You must keep your eyes peeled. Do not worry, the website will be able to give you tips and a guide on what to be looking for. So, the next time you are sitting at home bored, just go to geocaching.com to discover hours of fun and adventures. Be warned, once you start, you will not ever want to stop. Who wouldn’t love being a modern day Indiana Jones? 7

The 2020/2021 school year is going to be a unique one. Schools across the nation are offering different options for students to choose from this year. Many schools are opening their doors for children to participate in a regular school schedule, but with added safety measures. They are also offering virtual options for parents that are not comfortable with their children returning to the regular school environment yet. No matter which one you choose, here are a few ways to ensure your child is thriving in both settings. To begin, it is important to familiarize yourself with your school’s new guidelines. They vary by district, and no two schools are the same. To find out the safety precautions that will be enforced at your child’s school, please check out the links provided. Clarksville/Montgomery County Schools: www.cmcss.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/CMCSS-REOPENING-PLAN_FINAL-3.pdf Fort Campbell Schools: www.dodea.edu/fortcampbellhs Christian County Schools: www.christiankyschools.us Staying well informed and prepared is key when sending your child back to the school environment. Even though there will be safety precautions put into place, everyone needs to be sure to do their part. Here are a few things that you can do to keep your child protected from Covid-19 this school year. 1)

Stock up on masks. It is very important to have multiple masks on hand for your child to wear throughout the day. Since the virus can stick to surfaces, changing your mask often will reduce the number of germs that could be stuck on the outside of your cloth mask. Provide your child with 4 or 5 different masks that are individually packaged in separate zip lock bags. After a few hours, change the mask and put the dirty mask back into its own zip lock bag. Wash and sanitize the mask daily.

2)

Buy a no-touch keyring. When searching online, you can now find special keyrings that can be used to open doors, push button pads, and more. This will help you to reduce the number of dirty surfaces that you may come in contact with.

3)

Bring drinks from home. Water fountain use is not recommended during this time. Instead, pack your child a few water bottles from home that they can drink throughout the day.

4)

Pack Personal Sanitizers. Whenever your child sits down at a desk or lunch table, instruct them to sanitize it first. They can do so by using their own personalized sanitizing wipes, or by simply putting a few drops of hand sanitizer down and wiping it down with a napkin.

5)

No sharing snacks or drinks. This may be a little harder for younger kids to understand, but it is important to remind your children to not share any snacks or drinks with other children at this time.

6)

Sanitize your hands often. Finally, it is crucial that your child remembers to sanitize their hands all throughout the day. Once every hour could be a great way for them to keep track of this task.

If you are electing for your child to stay home and do virtual learning this year, we have a few awesome tips for you as well. It can be a huge change for an entire family, and it is best to go into the school year prepared. 1)

Learn your technology before the school year begins, it is important to take a few days to learn the ins and outs of your home technology. Make sure you get to know your computer, and that your child knows how to troubleshoot common issues. Do they know how to restart the internet router? What to do when the computer freezes up? How to check internet connection? Ensuring that they know these things might save you from a few stressful phone calls in the future.

2)

Set up a schedule. Even though your child is now doing their schoolwork at home, they need to stay on a schedule. Have them wake up and get ready at a certain time every day just like they would if they were attending school. Slot out allotted times for different subjects, for lunch, as well as extracurricular activities. Who says you can’t have gym or art class at home?

3)

Connect with other homeschoolers. Switching to virtual learning can be a little shocking to a child’s social life. If possible, try and find other families that are taking the virtual learning route. Allow them all to Zoom chat during lunch or set up small weekend playdates. 4) Have a distraction-free environment. It is probably not best for your child to try and learn in a room full of distracting toys and TVs. If you have the available space, set up a separate area in your house that you can turn into a classroom.

Lately it has been advised for all citizens to wear a mask when they go out in public. The information released to the world has been a little confusing on if facial masks can help in the prevention of spreading the virus. What type of mask can keep you safe? What does wearing a mask actually do? Here is some important information that you need to know. At the beginning of the pandemic, the CDC stated that any mask that was not a N95 or surgical mask was not effective in preventing the spread of the virus. So, why now the sudden shift in viewpoints? It is simple. There was not enough testing out there, and the CDC believed that many Americans were not ready for mass mask wearing right away. There was also concern about having enough masks for healthcare workers across the globe. They have now come out and admitted that the facial mask should have been a requirement since day one. The use of a cloth mask is being highly advised and even required in many states. This comes with new research that shows that even cloth masks can stop the spread of nasal droplets when sneezing or coughing, which in turn reduces the spread of the virus. Recent studies also show that areas that mandated facial masks have a slower growth rate of cases compared to other states that did not. It is important to note that cloth masks and other non N95 masks are not meant to protect you from the virus. Instead, it helps prevent infected individuals from spreading it as aggressively. Many people can be asymptomatic, which means they could be spreading Covid-19 without even realizing it. Mandating facial coverings helps reduce the number of contaminated droplets in the air or on surfaces.

An interesting finding from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation states that 33,000 deaths could be avoided by October 1 if 95 percent of people wore masks in public. Wearing any kind of mask in public can help reduce the spread of the virus. Whether it be a surgical mask, cloth mask, or other, doing your part can make a huge difference. After months of dealing with Covid-19, more and more cloth masks are becoming easily attainable. But, if you ever find yourself in a pinch, there are many options in creating your own cloth mask. You can grab an old t-shirt, bandana, or towel, and secure it around your noses and mouth by tying it around your head. The most recomended fabric is quilted cotton with double layers. Look at your fabric in a light. The less light that you see from it the better the protection. Be sure to wash your mask after use and avoid touching it while out in public. As always thoroughly wash your hands and avoid touching your face and eyes. Always keep a mask in your purse or car for easy access. Together as a community we can get through this global pandemic. 22
