September is
Down the Block
National Chicken Month By Crysta Crum and David Harris Everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, but come September, chickens are about to get an entire month’s worth of attention. This observance brings together chicken producers, grocery retailers, and many other companies and brands in an effort to provide recipes and celebrate one of the best protein food choices a person can make. One fun fact about chicken recipes is that you can eat chicken all month long and never have it the same way twice! As proof of just how fascinating chickens can be, it has been discovered that they can actually remember and recognize over 100 individuals and are also the closest living relative to the Tyrannosaurus-Rex. Something tells me the Jurassic World movie would have been very different if chickens replaced the dinosaurs. While it is important to eat your veggies and strengthen your bones with milk, meat is also beneficial to your diet. Taken from an article at boldsky.com, here are the health benefits of eating chicken: 1. Build Muscles: Chicken is lean meat. This basically means that it has little fat and lots of protein. People who are trying to add bulk to their muscle eat lots of boiled chicken. 2. Increases Appetite: Chicken has zinc which helps to maintain a healthy appetite. A bowl of steaming chicken soup can change the taste of your mouth. 3. Keeps Bones Healthy: Chicken has phosphorus, which, along with calcium, keeps your bones healthy. It might be good for women who are prone to having weak bones. 4. Heart Healthy: Chicken has cholesterol, but it also has niacin which helps lower cholesterol. If you choose lean pieces of chicken and prepare them without adding oil or butter, it can be heart healthy. 5. Improves Immunity: Chicken has lots of trace minerals that give a boost to the immune system. Usually, boiled chicken in pepper soup is also good for fighting off a cold. 6. Helps Children Grow: Chicken is a one of the best foods for growing children. Chicken has lots of amino acids that helps the children to grow taller and stronger. 7. Cuts Risk of Arthritis: Chicken is rich in a mineral called selenium. Selenium cuts the risk of developing arthritis at later stages of life. 8. Relieves Stress: Chicken has vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, which has a calming effect on the nerves. If you are stressed out, then there’s nothing like grilled chicken to chill out. 9. Reduces Rick of Heart Attack: Chicken cuts the risk of heart attack because it is rich in vitamin B6. This vitamin lowers the levels of homocysteine. If you have homocysteine, it can cause cardiac arrest.
www.campbell.armymwr.com
10. Soothes PMS Symptoms: Chicken has magnesium that can help you cope with pre- menstrual stress. The magnesium levels in your blood reduce just before you have your cycle. Compensate by having some chicken. 11. Spikes Testosterone Levels: Chicken has special health benefits for men. This is because zinc in chicken helps to regulate the testosterone (male hormone) levels. Fort Campbell MWR restaurants offer plenty of places to eat chicken. The 19th Hole Snack Bar offers a refreshing chicken salad sandwich, perfect after a long morning of golf. The Dawg Haus may specialize in hotdogs, but they also have plenty of delicious chicken options for you to try! They offer a spicy chicken sandwich, a grilled chicken sandwich, a crispy chicken sandwich and for something lighter, you can get a grilled chicken wrap or one of their salads. The Zone offers quite a few fun chicken options with not only chicken sandwiches and salads but also chicken wings! These wings come in plain, hot, teriyaki, BBQ and Thai chili flavors. You can also get chicken on your pizza at The Zone! If you are getting hungry during a game of bowling, make sure you try Hooper Bowling Center’s snack bar for a variety of chicken sandwiches and salads.
Our two buffet restaurants aren’t lacking in chicken options. What would a southern buffet be without chicken? Cole Park Commons Southern Buffet offers country fried chicken every day and their buffet items will rotate other favorite chicken dishes such as chicken and waffles. The Smokehaus doesn’t miss out on delicious chicken options because what would a BBQ be without some chicken? The Smokehaus offers smoked chicken on Fridays and baked chicken on Sundays. With all of these chicken options, you could have chicken for lunch almost every day in September. You’ll have no problem celebrating National Chicken Month, and if you’re not sure what to try first - just wing it!

Performance Triad By Meghan Williams
We need sleep. We all know it to be true. The Army’s Ready and Resilient Campaign’s Performance Triad is just one of the many sources that remind us that we need good nutrition, exercise and sleep! What we may not know is that we need quality sleep. How many times have you found yourself blindly dragging your body from the sheets, staggering to the kitchen for a much needed cup of coffee and thinking to yourself, “I just woke up! How can I possibly be so tired?” This is, of course, often said in a whiny voice, because let’s face it, we feel like toddlers that simply want to cry because we’re still exhausted. The answer? You may have skipped stage three of the sleep cycle. Sleep is our body’s time to repair muscle tissue, restore mental energy and excrete cellular waste. This is a very important part of our body’s health that is broken up into stages. Stage One is light sleep, where your body begins to drift in an out of sleep and you can be awakened easily. During Stage Two, eye movement stops and brain waves become slower. Stage Three is known as deep sleep or delta sleep and the last stage is rapid eye movement or REM sleep. Stage Three is the stage we need that may just keep our whiny toddler selves at bay. Stage Three is where your brain produces extremely slow brain waves called delta waves. It is the constructive phase of sleep for recuperation of the mind and body. It’s also the stage Family Nurse Practitioner Teresa Floyd says we may be having a hard time getting to if we suffer from sleep disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or sleep deprivation from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The good news is that she may have a solution to help ensure your body is getting the rest it needs and you don’t have to wrestle your pillow to get it. It’s called Yoga Nidra, and according to Floyd it is an ancient practice that gives us a way to
www.campbell.armymwr.com
“take control of our own lives, and promote personal health and wellness.” The name itself means Yogic Sleep in Sanskrit, and is believed to create an altered state of consciousness that allows a person to relax and heal. As a Nurse Practitioner at the Intrepid Spirit here at Fort Campbell, Floyd is very familiar with the sleep issues many in our community face, and after practicing Yoga Nidra herself for a number of years, she realized it was a skill that could benefit many of her patients. “It’s not just some mantra you put on wall,” she explained “It’s a way to be the master of our own thoughts. I use it a lot to make myself relax at night.” Floyd believes so strongly in the discipline she became an instructor, and now offers Yoga Nidra classes for Soldiers in the Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) and those referred to her at the Intrepid Spirit. The technique takes around 30 minutes to complete and involves the direction of a
practitioner that walks you through the relaxation process in a calm soothing voice. Although, you remain awake for those 30 minutes, your mind and body reach a point similar to stage three sleep, where brainwaves slow to that constructive state. “It’s said to be equal to three to four hours of sleep because of the restorative factors of the mind and body,” Floyd said. The extreme deep relaxation can also be more peaceful than a regular night’s sleep where we often toss and turn. In Yoga Nidra, you strive to eliminate stress and become “masters of our own thoughts,” said Floyd. The benefits of Yoga Nidra do not end there. According to Floyd, “It pulls mind and body back together allowing us to slowly release muscle and event memory.” That may be where many of her patients see the greatest rewards. In the case of someone suffering from PTSD, she has noticed the practice promotes focus and increases coping skills. The Department of Defense recognized the same results in a 2006 study conducted at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The data collected on the efficiency of Yoga Nidra was so compelling, that it was integrated into Soldier’s weekly treatment programs for its ability to identify and heal destructive tendencies. Although Floyd’s classes are currently only for referred Soldiers, she emphasizes that anyone can benefit from Yoga Nidra. To find out more visit her website at www.ya-yagoa.org. It may just help put your inner crying child to rest for good.

National Video Game Day
Game Time
September 12 By Crysta Crum
If you’re the type of person who sleeps, eats, and breathes video games, then you probably don’t need a specific day set aside to celebrate them. But for the rest of the world there is National Video Game Day on September 12. The gaming industry is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the entertainment business. With multiple consoles, games, hardware, accessories, downloadable content and more, there is serious money to be spent and fun to be had. The progressions of games and consoles in recent years have led to more reasons to celebrate this unofficial national holiday. Video games come in all different levels of fun, amounts of violence, and ease of access. The most current and popular video game consoles are PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii and WiiU. There are also more portable consoles such as Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. For anyone who hasn’t kept up with the history of the gaming world, here are a few fun facts: although there were “experiments” of video games as early as the 1940’s, the first true video game console, Magnavox Odyssey, wasn’t created until 1967, containing only a few simple games such as checkers and rifle shooting. The years 1972 – 1975 brought us the video game that really kicked off the video game industry with Pong. Atari’s Pong game started out first with an arcade version and then graduated to a home version. After seeing the success of this
game many other companies decided to develop games that were practically a mirror image of Pong but with a twist. Speaking of Atari, the Video Computer System (VCS) was the first successful video game system with removable games that allowed multiple games to be played with the same hardware. This at home system was at first sold exclusively at Sears. Now if you think that only nerds celebrate this national holiday, then think again! Large big name magazines like Empire & Forbes celebrate in their own way. Empire Magazine released a list of the 50 most loved video game characters, and Mario was actually number two on the list, being beaten out by Gordon Freeman.
But Mario still holds the record for being the most easily recognizable video game character in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition Book. Forbes Magazine releases a top 10 best selling video games list each year and the game that grabbed the number one spot for 2014 was Call of Duty Advanced Warfare. There are two MWR facilities where Soldiers can get their game on! The Dale Wayrynen Recreational Center and The Zone both offer various fighting, racing, and sport games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One. Some noted titles are games like Madden, Grand Theft Auto, and Assassins Creed. While The Zone is only for ages 18 and up, it is the perfect place to also grab some yummy food while you play your favorite game.

Perspective Management
Let’s Make a Change By Jean Givens
We all have things that we wish were different about ourselves. It could be that we wish we had more education, a healthier lifestyle, better relationships, or even a more positive attitude. If there’s ever at time to start improving things in your life, this month is it! September 13 is Self-Improvement Day. You may be thinking, “I want to grow and improve, but I have no idea where to begin.” Allow me to share a few ideas with you. 1. Keep a Journal: Why a journal? You’ll want to write down any thoughts you may have during your journey to the new & improved you. It is a great idea to write
down affirmation statements first and foremost. Affirmation is defined as: 1. The act or an instance of affirming; state of being affirmed. 2. The assertion that something exists or is true. 3. Something that is affirmed; a statement or proposition that is declared to be true. 4. Confirmation or ratification of the truth or validity of a prior judgment, decision, etc. 5. Law: A solemn declaration accepted instead of a statement under oath. Confidence and faith in accomplishing what you are setting out to do is vital. Sometimes doubt will
15
slowly creep in and you may feel like giving up. When it does, your affirmation statements will surely begin to pay off. As a man thinks, so he is. Here are some examples: 1) “I am a person with a positive attitude. I actively choose to see the brighter side of any circumstance. When things do not go the way I plan, I adjust accordingly and move on.” 2) “I am a person who lives a lifestyle that keeps me in great health. I make conscious choices that do not negatively impact my body. I exercise regularly and appropriately. I eat foods that give me the necessary nutrients, drink plenty of water, and get adequate amounts of rest.” 3) “I am intelligent, valuable, and beautiful/handsome. I am capable of completing what I start. I add value to the lives of people around me. The only impossible things are those that I choose not to do.” Basically, you are putting a certainty in what you are seeking to change. Instead of “I want to become healthier”, you say “I am healthier”. Speak that which is not, as though it is.
Journaling helps you visualize. You can even take it a step farther and make a Vision Board. Here is my affirmation for you, you are the new you! 2. Set Realistic Goals: Do not go overboard with all the changes you want to make. In other words, don’t set yourself up to fail. Your goals must be reachable. If you want to lose weight as part of your healthier lifestyle, start small. Losing 20 pounds is an awesome goal, if you need to lose 20 pounds. If you already weigh 123 pounds, 20 pounds may not be healthy. Be sure to check with your doctor before endeavoring to set weight loss goals. Education goals need to be realistic and within reach as well. Seeking to obtain a doctorate when you only have a High School diploma is a bit of a reach. Let your first goal be to achieve a bachelor’s degree or maybe even an associate’s degree. Goals must also be measurable. If you aren’t able to track your progress, how will you know if you have reached your goal or not? Take it step by step. Achieving goals sometimes involves breaking bad habits and making new ones. Remember new habits are not formed overnight. If you give it time, your patience will be rewarded. Remember, depending on your goals, you may want to work on only one or two things at a time so as to not overwhelm yourself.
your goals, your deadlines, and let them help you set steps to achieve your goals. Along with that, don’t be afraid to let them know when you make a mistake or slip up along the way. Make sure you have people who will encourage you, be stern with you (not a push-over), and that you can be open and honest with. People can only help you and hold you accountable to your goals as much as you allow them.
3. Set Realistic Deadlines: Remember that the race is not given to the swift. The tortoise won because of his discipline. Do not expect big change to happen overnight, in a week, or even a month. Stick with it! If your goal is a healthier lifestyle, then six months is an unrealistic deadline. Why? Because you are seeking to change your lifestyle. That means this requires a continuous effort and discipline. A goal like obtaining a doctorate may feel like a lifetime, but is achievable in a number of years, including the smaller goals that must be achieved along the way. To use the weight loss example from earlier, losing 60 pounds in 12 months is reasonable. It allows for a reachable and realistic goal of five pounds a month. Even if eight months is your goal, that’s only seven and a half pounds a month. At the very least, that is about two pounds a week. See how that is less stressful to achieve? Looking to have a more positive self image? Don’t set a deadline of one month of positive talk, “I am worthy of this job promotion” or “I can deliver this briefing, and will with authority and knowledge.” You may get overwhelmed with thoughts of doubt. Strive for taking it day by day. Also, don’t beat yourself up if you are closing in on your deadline and haven’t quite made it yet. It’s okay. I find it better if I give myself a range of dates,
www.campbell.armymwr.com
a little leeway. Instead of November 4, how about November 4 through 8? 4. Have a Support System/Accountability: Now you’re probably thinking, “If I give myself leeway, I’ll keep doing it. How will I ever accomplish anything?” Good question. Here’s what you do. Have a good support system in place. You cannot achieve your goals all by yourself. Select people whom you trust and know will not let you give up on your goals. Sometimes you need people to remind you of your own affirmations and encourage you when you have moments of weakness. They say anything worth doing is worth doing right.
L e t ’s take it a step further. Anything worth doing isn’t worth doing alone. Let them know why you want to make those certain changes in your life. Allow them to know your affirmations,
5. Celebrate: Whenever you hit a milestone, especially when you meet a goal, celebrate! Maybe a Dunkin Donuts run here or there, a pamper day, a new video game or gadget, get that new interior you've been wanting in your car, or anything that will keep you encouraged and reaching for more. Never beat yourself up if you miss the mark or a deadline. Celebrate how far you’ve come. Self-improvement is a process and not automatic. While there are some things we need to change about ourselves to advance and grow, always remember you are wonderfully made. Nothing is impossible. Whether you start your journey to a better you now or September 13, just start! Do not let anything hold tyou back. Remember what is important to you every step of the way. Never violate what you value to achieve a goal. After all, is it really improvement if you have lost integrity in the process? Don’t be discouraged! Get motivated! And if for some reason you lose motivation remember this one statement, I BELIEVE IN YOU!

In the Know
Not a Terminal Disease By Joseph Varney
Suicide has been a plague on mankind since the dawn of time. As long as man has been able to record history, there have been incidents of suicides. There are suicides written in Greek Mythology, in Egyptian Hieroglyphics, there are even suicides in the Bible. Pain, anger, sadness, and depression have engulfed minds since their release from Pandora’s Box. If man has not been able to find a cure for suicide from the earliest reaches of our known history through today, it is not likely that we will find a cure during our lifetime. But suicide is not a terminal disease. No one has to die from suicide. The single best way to determine if someone is having thoughts of suicide is to simply ask them. Over the last decade, the Army has lost 1,402 active
19
duty Soldiers to suicide. Fort Campbell accounted for 105 of those Soldiers. Year after year, demographics demonstrate that the leading stress triggers that cause a Soldier to have thoughts of suicide are work stress, problems sleeping, physical health problems and legal issues. However, more than any other, 72 percent of Army Suicides revolve around a failed relationship. The Army classifies a relationship failure as relationship difficulties between a Soldier and Spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, Soldier and their parents or Soldier and their children. But the interesting thing about relationship failure is that we have all been there. We all know what it feels like and therefore we all should know what it looks like. Who among us has never had a broken heart? Never been jilted by a high school sweetheart? Never had feelings for another that weren’t returned? Never have been publicly rejected in a social environment? We have all been there, and done that. But what we are not very good at is recognizing those same
feelings of emotional pain, rejection, and disappointment in others. And if we do see it, we resist interfering because societal norms have taught us that it is not our place to get involved. That unwritten rule of acceptable behavior needs to change. When we see someone who is hurt, or upset, or angry, or withdrawn, we need to pull that person to the side and say, “Are you ok?” If we are courageous enough to take that step, is the person going to tell us what is on their mind? No. That person may believe “it is none of your business”, “you wouldn’t understand”, “I can handle my own problems”, “leave me alone”. But you suspect that something is wrong. You see that their demeanor has changed. They are acting differently. They are late for work. They don’t perform tasks to their usual standard. They are angry. They are withdrawn. So you ask them. They may tell you something just to get you to stop asking or because you have demonstrated that you care

You have heard them comment on troubles at home, or issues with the boyfriend/girlfriend. You suspect they are having money problems because they don’t eat lunch or ask you for a dollar for the vending machine. You see that their supervisor is constantly giving them grief about work performance or appearance. You know that something is wrong. T ROT FOR T ROOPS

By Jenelle Grewell Trot for Troops is a 10K, 5K and One Mile Fun Run held annually in Hopkinsville to recognize our service men, women, their Families and the sacrifices they all make. This year the event will be held on Saturday, September 12 at the Hopkinsville Christian County YMCA, according to Carolyn Altman, the Fitness Director of the YMCA in Hopkinsville. “The sacrifices the service men and
woman and their Families make, their hardships are very much engrained into my heart, as I have experienced and heard stories of my grandparents and lived them as well, Carolyn said. “My grandparents helped raise my sister and I; we both are the people we are today because they had the ‘Once a Marine, Always a Marine’ outlook on life. I am forever grateful. The least I can do is organize an event to honor them, those who have and are currently serving.
Carolyn said the best thing about organizing the event is to see the Families of the service members running with each other to honor those who are deployed and/or those who are KIA or MIA. “There is so much passion and pride at this event. Registration for the event can be found online at active.com or at the hopkinsvilleymca.org, or you can register in person at the Hopkinsville YMCA. This event is also a part of our Eagle Challenge Tour, so get out there and get one event closer to earning your medal for 2015.
