When you think of fall, one of the first things that comes to mind for me is warm and delicious crockpot recipes. Nothing beats coming inside on a cool autumn day to dinner already waiting on you. Crockpots can cook just about anything, and they make dinner nights extremely simple. If you are stuck on what to make in your crockpot, give one of these recipes a try.
Fiesta Bowl by Callie Bryan 1lb ground turkey or beef • 1 can of sweet corn 1 can of mild Rotel • 1 can of black beans 1 packet of taco seasoning • 1 cup shredded cheese Put your crockpot on low and add in your meat and taco seasoning. Allow that to cook for about 4 hours, or until the meat is done. Add in your canned vegetables and give it a good stir. Let it cook on low for another hour or so. Right before it is done, top it with cheese. Let the cheese melt. You can eat this recipe over rice, tortilla chips, quinoa, or even in a taco bowl. You can mix it up however you like! This recipe is incredibly easy and affordable.

If you have a four-legged friend in your household, they are about to be in for a huge shock. For the past few months, they have gotten used to having their human companions’ home at all times. Whether it be the adults now working from home, or the children being out of school, our pets have gotten used to having someone with them at all time. With the world slowly opening back up, and schools coming back into session, it is time to start preparing our pets for that much dreaded alone time again. Some may find that once they return to their normal daily routines, their pet begins to act out in ways that they have not seen in the past. This could be due to separation anxiety. It can be frustrating for owners, and many start to question possible treatments for this behavior.
Here are a few things that you can try to help ease your dog or cat’s separation anxiety if this issue begins to occur. First things first, do you know what the signs of separation anxiety in a pet are? These are a few key signs. Urinating or pooping indoors quickly after leaving • Barking or howling • Destruction of household items Escaping their designated area • Pacing To begin, you will want to try out multiple exercises in order to find the perfect one for your pet. This can be a lengthy process, but it will be worth it in the long run. One exercise to try is counterconditioning. This is when the pet is trained to think that being left alone is a good thing, and not a bad one. One way to do this is by giving them a special treat only when they are left alone. For dogs, try out a Kong toy. These chew toys can be filled with peanut butter or other delicious items, and they keep them busy for hours. For your feline friend, give a special catnip filled toy a try. It will really help calm them down. Another thing to try is to gradually get them used to being left alone again. Start by leaving for short intervals at a time, usually around 15-30 minutes. When you return, give them a lot of attention and hand them a treat. Gradually increase the time throughout the next few weeks until it is time to return to work. This gives your pet time to adjust to being left alone again. The last tip that we have for you is to begin every day with a walk. The trick is to tire your dog out every morning so that they are in a resting mode when you are away. Play a vigorous game of fetch with them, or have them by your side for a morning jog. Don’t be afraid to try many different techniques with your pet until you find the right fit for you and your family. Remember, no two animals are the same. There are also doggy daycare options available for that special pet that requires extra attention. 22
Apple pie is truly a fall staple. When you think of Fall, you think of that warm feeling and cinnamon smell. It is not really fall until you bake an apple pie. Everyone has that one recipe that they love, but it is always nice to try new things and spice it up a notch. Whenever you start to feel that crisp in the air, grab your mixing bowls and give a few of these recipes a try.
Apple Pie Pancakes by Anne L 1 1⁄2 c. all-purpose flour • 1⁄4 c. granulated sugar • 1 tsp. baking powder 1 ⁄2 tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. apple pie spice • 1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt 2 large eggs • 1 1⁄2 c. whole milk • 1 chopped apple In a large mixing bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, sugar, apple pie spice, baling powder, and 1⁄2 teaspoon salt. In a different bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Then, combine your wet and dry ingredients. Stir in the apple. On medium heat, coat your pan with oil, and pour in your mixture to your pancakes desired size. Cook the pancakes until bubbles begin to appear around the edges and in the center, about 1 to 2 minutes. Flip your pancakes.Top with your favorite maple syrup or whip cream.
Apple Caramel Cheesecake by Evin DC Crust: 1 1⁄2 c. crushed graham crackers • 1⁄4 c. granulated sugar 4 tbsp. melted butter • 1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt Cheesecake: 4 blocks cream cheese, softened • 3⁄4 c. granulated sugar 1 ⁄2 c. lightly packed brown sugar • 3 large eggs 1 ⁄4 c. sour cream • 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract • 1⁄2 tsp. kosher salt Topping: 3 ⁄4 c. apple cider • 1⁄3 c. brown sugar • 1⁄4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tbsp. cold butter • 2 apples, peeled and thinly sliced Pinch salt • Caramel sauce First, you will want to make the crust. Preheat oven to 325° and grease an 8” or 9” springform pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix together your crushed graham crackers, sugar, butter, and salt. Pat down and push your mixture into prepared pan and up sides, making sure it in packed down tightly. Now it is time to make the cheesecake. In a large mixing bowl, beat together your cream cheese and sugars until smooth. Pour in your eggs, one at a time, then add in the sour cream and vanilla. Add in your dry ingredients of flour and salt and beat until just combined. Then, grab your crust and pour it over it. To achieve the perfect cooking, you will want to wrap bottom of pan in aluminum foil and place in a large roasting pan. Place in oven then pour boiling water in roasting pan about halfway up sides of springform pan. Next, you will want to bake until center of cheesecake only slightly jiggles, about 1 hour 30 minutes. Turn off heat, prop open oven door, and let cheesecake cool in oven, 1 hour. Remove foil and refrigerate cheesecake for at least 5 hours and up to overnight. Topping Time! In a large skillet over medium high heat, boil your apple cider, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cook until slightly thickened and it coats your spoon. Stir in butter, then add apples. Let mixture cool. Spoon your apple mixture and caramel on top. 23

Anyone that owns a smart phone or tablet dreads the day that it starts to have small technical issues. For many people, it is a lifeline. Whether they use their tablets for schooling, or their phones for work communication, many can’t afford to have a device that isn’t working properly. A plus side of having the internet at our fingertips is that there have been many cool hacks shared that can assist you in fixing your malfunctioning device. Here are a few of our favorites. If Your Device Will Not Charge There are two things you can try when this issue occurs. First, try rebooting your device. The phrase “did you turn it off and turn it back on?” gets used a lot when troubleshooting technology, and there is a good reason why. Many glitches can be fixed by just a quick reboot. If that is not the issue, try checking the charging port for any trash or dirt. Use a can of compressed air and shoot some into the charging port. It will clean out anything jammed in there. Overheating Device When a device gets too hot, it will shut down and you will get a message on your screen indicating that. If it has been left outside or in a hot car, you have found your culprit. If not, a running app in your device’s background could be to blame. Make sure to clear out your apps on a regular basis by going to Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Loss of Network Signal Did your phone lose signal and you are not in the middle of nowhere? The cell towers might not be to blame, but a lose SIM card might be. Just use a pin or a paperclip to open the tray on the side, fix it and put it back into place, then close it back. All done. Fixing Poor Call Quality Are you having trouble hearing your calls, or are people having trouble hearing you? Grab a toothpick and clean out the speakers on your phone. They can easily get filled with gunk or makeup and harm your call quality. Fixing a Wet Device It is everyone’s worst nightmare watching your phone drop into a big bowl of water. Whether it be a pool, bathtub, or even toilet. It happens. The first thing you need to do in these situations is to grab your phone and turn it off immediately. Then, you will want to grab a pin and remove your SIM card. Grab a towel, and dry off your phone, and be careful not to push any buttons. Finally, you will want to vacuum seal your phone, or place it into silica gel packets. Both of these methods are safe ways to draw out water from your device.
Decorating for Fall is always such a warming experience. Changing out your bright summer decorations for warm deep tones can really get you into the season. If you are in the mood to try some DIY projects this year, then you are in luck. Melissa, the creator of Missa Bean Gift Emporium, has shared some breathtaking fall wreath projects for you to try out.
Floral Crystal Yarn Wreath: Hot Glue • Wire Cutters • 1 grapevine wreath (6-10in) • 4-6 different colors/textures of yarn 2-3 greenery stems • 5-7 different ribbons, trim or lace (1 yard of trim) • 1 large flower 2-3 smaller flowers or filler stems • 2 crystals or pendants 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
First, we want to cut all of our yarn to size. Measure out and cut all of your different colors of yarn. They need to be around 4-6ft long strands of yarn (depending on how long you want it). Start wrapping your yarn around the grapevine. Grab 4 pieces of different colored yarn and loop them in the middle over your wreath. Pull remaining yarn through the loop and pull tight. Continue this step until half of your wreath is covered with yarn and you have your desired look Attach your ribbon and trim with the same method above. Spread them throughout the yarn and make sure they are facing the front of your wreath. Cut down your flower stems to 5-6in and begin to place your flowers. Place the greenery first by pushing the floral stem through the grapevine in the desired location. Repeat this step using the smaller flowers and ending with the largest flower. Flip the wreath over, trim down the metal stems and hot glue them into place making sure everything is secure. Add your pendants or crystals to your wreath hanging them from the center of the grapevine and from the bottom of the wreath. To finish it up trim up the base of your yarn with scissors. (You can also add other decorations like beads, feathers, pearls, etc)
Floral Grapevine Wreath: Hot Glue Gun • Wire Cutters • 4-6 different kinds of greenery • 2-3 large flowers or different kinds/colors 3-5 smaller flowers in different kinds/colors • 1 grapevine wreath (18 – 20in is standard for front doors) 1. First you will want to cut down your stems on most of your fake plants leaving them about 7in long. 2. You will begin with putting your greenery through the grapevine wreath first. Push the end of the wire stems through the wreath spreading it out throughout the surface area you choose (Side, bottom, top, etc). This will be the base of your floral area. Mix most of your greenery randomly together and save a few pieces to the side as fillers. 3. Place your large flowers by pushing the stems through the wreath. Then continue by placing your smaller flowers and left-over greenery to get the desired look. 4. Flip over your wreath and trim down all of the wire stems. Use hot glue to secure the stems to the wreath (too much glue will drip through to the other side). You can hot glue the back first and let it dry. Once dry flip it back over and lightly tug on all of the stems to make sure they are secured. 5. Once everything is secure your wreath is ready to be hung up!

If you planted yourself a garden this year, it is time to start preparing it for the colder weather that is right around the corner. Prepping your garden for the winter helps ensure that it will be ready to go next year. Here are a few tips and tricks to try this weekend to get your plants and soil prepared for the first big freeze.
Clean Up Your Area As vegetables and plants go out of season, they will begin to rot and look unkept. Rotting plants can invite disease and pest into your garden that can cause serious damage to other plants and soil. You will also want to clean up any invasive weeds that started to grow. Make sure to throw them in the trash or burn them to prevent regrowth.
Prepare Your Soil for Spring Did you know that Fall is actually the best time to prepare your soil? Adding great nutrients to the area helps your soil be nice and enriched for Spring. A few awesome nutrients to dig into your soil are manure, compost, bone meal, kelp, and rock phosphate. After you have enriched your soil, make sure to cover it with a tarp or plastic to prevent winter rain from washing it all away.
Plant New Crops There are actually a few different crops that you can plant in the fall that will help prevent soil erosion. Those crops are clover, rye, and field peas. Do not worry, these vegetables are a little more resilient to cold temperatures and will bring great nutrients to your garden.
Add New Mulch Adding a new layer of mulch in the wintertime is always a smart idea. New mulch in your garden will reduce water loss, protect you from soil erosion, and cut back on that pesky weed growth. It also helps regulate soil temperatures and that will ease the transition into winter.
Maintain Your Tools Keeping your gardening tools nice and clean can get a little difficult when they are constantly being used in the spring and summer seasons. Fall and winter is the perfect time to clean them up and get them oiled. If you notice that rust has began to set in, simply use sandpaper or a wire brush to scrub it off. After sharpening them, add a nice layer of light machine oil and store them in a dry place. 33
