Do you sell or intend to sell tobacco products by retail? You must register with the Office of Tobacco Control. Section 37 of the Public Health (Tobacco) Acts, 2002 and 2004, provides for the establishment and maintenance by the Office of Tobacco Control of a register of all persons who carry on in whole or part the business of selling tobacco products by retail. What does this mean for Retailers?
• If you sell or intend to sell tobacco products by retail whether over the counter or from a selfservice vending machine you must register with the Office of Tobacco Control (OTC).
• A person who, prior to 1 July 2009, carries on the business of selling tobacco products by retail must apply to register with the OTC between 1 July and 1 October 2009.
• A person who proposes to commence the business of selling tobacco products by retail from 1 July 2009 must register with the OTC before they can sell tobacco products.
• In relation to self-service vending machines, both the owner of the self-service vending
machine(s) and the holder of a license for the sale of alcohol for a licensed premises or the person entered in the register of clubs in which the machine is located must register. Tobacco products can only be sold when both parties have registered and are entered on the register.

Cassidy Wines take on Gallo
Cassidy Wines recently announced they are taking over the distribution of the entire Gallo portfolio from August 2009 including the Turning Leaf, Gallo Family Vineyards and Redwood Creek ranges. These wines will join Rancho Zabaco and Carlo Rossi which Cassidy Wines has been distributing for the past 5 years. One of the best known names in the wine world, Gallo is also one of the top selling Californian brands on the Irish market. As part of the new distribution agreement Cassidy Wines have appointed a brand manager to coordinate and manage the Gallo portfolio. Colin Clarke
joins Cassidy Wines in the newly created position from Allied Drinks where he worked for three years as national accounts manager. Cassidy Wines commenced trading in 1977 as a supplier of wines to the retail trade in Ireland. Now in its 32nd year of trading, the continued success of the company has been the its ability to respond to the demanding needs of an ever evolving market place. VFI Proposed Changes With the news that 4,800 pub industry jobs were lost in the last 12 months, The Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) recently commissioned independent research of its membership by leading market researchers Ask Chili to ascertain the current situation in the Irish pub trade. Following on from the survey, the VFI has several recommendations to save Irish pubs which include reduce VAT rates from 21.5% to 15% and from 13.5% to 10%; appoint an ombudsman to ensure financial institutions are operating fairly and transparently in offering credit facilities to SMEs; reduce local authority commercial and water rates; extend the recently announced initiatives and incentives to encourage employment in the manufacturing sector to the hospitality sector; ensure that the current blood alcohol levels permissible for drivers be kept at 80mgs and not reduced, as the VFI feel this proposed move will have no effect on road fatalities and is likely to lead to further pub closures and job losses in rural areas. 2

Edward Dillon Restaurant of the Year Awards Now in their 9th year, the Food & Wine Magazine Edward Dillon Restaurant of the Year Awards are recognised as the most influential and authoritative culinary awards in Ireland. Taking place at the Mansion House, Dublin, in August last, Sunil Ghai, the Executive Chef of Ananda Restaurant, was named as the Veuve Clicquot Chef of the Year while Chapter One Restaurant was crowned Penfolds Restaurant of the Year. Other winners on the night were: John and Francis Brennan from The Park Hotel, in Kenmare, County Kerry and Michael Deane of Deanes in Belfast; the Brennans were honoured for their outstanding contribution to Ireland’s hospitality industry, while Michael Deane was praised for his consistent pursuit of the highest culinary standards. Deane’s restaurant has maintained its Michelin star for the past thirteen years.

Trade in Illicit Cigarettes Grows Effective from the 1 August 2009, Gallaher (Dublin) Ltd. officially began trading in Ireland as Japan Tobacco International (JTI). This final stage of integration comes two years after the successful acquisition and integration of Gallaher by JTI, which established JTI as the third largest tobacco company in the world. Based in Dublin for 41 years, then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, first opened the Gallaher factory and headquarters in 1968. As part of their integration plan, JTI intend focusing on the fight against the growing problem of illicit trade of cigarettes in Ireland, which is estimated to cost the exchequer €500m annually in lost revenue. In 2008 alone, the illicit trade also cost legitimate retailers €487m in lost turnover and a further €358m in cross purchases lost.

Since launching itself on an unsuspecting Irish public in 2004, the Electric Picnic has firmly established itself as a staple on our social calendar. Therefore, when a chance came up for Irish Bartender to get his groove on down at the Bacardi B-Live tent at EP09, all that was left for me to do was grab a tent, a pair of wellies and pile in the motor for the drive down. With acts in the calibre of ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson, newly reformed ska legends Madness and guaranteed party starters The Flaming Lips on the line-up, this was one weekend that promised much. But, as with this festival every year, it was the smaller moments that brought a smile to my face as the post-weekend contemplation began. Like the surreal Friday night experience of listening to hundreds of mud-soaked revellers singing lustily along to the theme tune of Aussie soap ‘Home and Away’ as DJ Beardyman mashed things up at the B-Live tent. Clearly the cocktails were working

their magic on the beautiful people bopping away inside. Unfortunately, Irish Bartender couldn’t work his way through the throng so I decided to bide my time and head there early on the Saturday. As the missus and I rocked up early Saturday afternoon the signs were promising with Hector Ó hEochagáin throwing shapes at the edge of the dance-floor, Mojito in hand, while Shovell, one time member of M-people, laid the beat down on drums. Things got even better as Bacardi flairtender Slim Denby singled us out for some special attention. The weekend was about to take off. While Irish Bartender chatted away to Bacardi Brand Ambassador for Ireland, Paul
Lambert, the aforementioned Slim put on an eye-catching display behind the VIP bar. Not wanting to be seen as fussy we decided to sample the bar’s entire range, which Slim had lined up in next to no time. I tucked in to the glorious Bacardi cocktails as Paul explained some of the brand’s unique selling points. Such as the fact that the earliest Daiquiri recipe on paper from 1916 explicitly states that Bacardi rum must be used. Similarly, the earliest recorded Mojito ingredient’s list recommends that the same brand be used to ensure that the drink is of the highest standard. Judging by the vast quantities being consumed at this early hour in the B-Live tent the original authors clearly knew what they were on about.

With the likes of Beardyman, Filthy Dukes, Unabombers and Krafty Kuts all parading their wares in the B-Live tent over the course of the weekend, an upbeat feel was patently something that the organisers were aiming for. Indeed, Bacardi has now spent over 10 years at Irish music festivals combining music, drinks and elaborate production. According to their market development manager, Tiernan O’Morain, this gives consumers a unique experience and more importantly for Bacardi, a chance for music lovers to experience Bacardi in a truly vibrant area.

“Electric Picnic is a unique Irish festival and has established itself brilliantly in the festival market as
the main music event for 18-35 year olds,” said Tiernan. “This audience represents Bacardi’s loyal consumers so it makes perfect sense for us to be present each year.” Bacardi’s barometer for success for B-Live is measured through a wide range of criteria – the consumer’s interaction with the brand throughout the weekend, brand awareness and an increasing propensity to purchase it after the event. Whatever about the latter two, there was no doubting the crowd participation over the course of this festival. Irish Bartender highlighted the throngs visible outside the B-Live tent on the Friday night and mischievously suggested to Tiernan that Bacardi should consider expanding their operation in future years. “We are constantly looking at ways to improve the Bacardi experience at the festival and each year we make various modifications to the arena. However, the overall concept works very well for us and we have no plans 5 | September 2009

to change that,” Tiernan smiled, much to my chagrin. It looked like I’d have to continue to struggle my way through the crowds. Despite constantly ducking out of the tent in order to catch some of the attractive musical offerings available elsewhere at the EP site, the Bacardi B-Live tent continued to act as a beacon over the course of the weekend. Not that I was alone in that respect. Some of those spotted sipping the mouth-watering cocktails at the Bacardi VIP Area included the aforementioned Hector Ó hEochagáin, who celebrated his 40th birthday in style with a group of friends, including close pal Tommy Tiernan. New Late Late Show host, Ryan Tubridy, accompanied by stunning girlfriend

Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain, toasted his successful debut with a Bacardi Mojito while footballer Robbie Keane’s wife, Claudine, and comedian Sean Hughes were also seen enjoying the hospitality on offer. Obviously Irish Bartender was keeping the right company. Catching up with Tiernan O’Morain again at the VIP bar on the Sunday night I was moved to ask what he’d remember from this year’s festival. “The highlight for me at Electric Picnic is seeing the good time smiles on so many faces in the tent. A lot of planning goes into the event, and the payback for the 60-plus people involved in the production is seeing the audience really enjoy and get into it,” said Tiernan contentedly, as the party continued to rage all around him.
With the weekend’s excursions catching up on him Irish Bartender reluctantly made his excuses at the B-Live tent and trudged off into the night. Despite the rather depressing thought that there was a year to go until the next EP, a head full of happy memories would have to suffice. Having just returned from my holidays in Cuba, the Bacardi B-Live tent ensured that the same joyous, carefree vibe Irish Bartender experienced there had percolated through this festival. Thoughts of recessions and negative equities were washed away in a sea of happy times. Laughing again at some of the mad-cap antics witnessed over the course of the weekend, Irish Bartender wobbled off to somehow find his tent.

Who we saw: Orbital: One of Q magazine’s ‘50 Bands to See Before You Die’ this performance showcased the band’s output over the last two decades. Legend has it that Paul Hartnoll insisted they play the festival after his previous DJ set there and the crowd’s reaction won’t have let him down. Memorable tunes for a memorable night.
Brian Wilson: As the main creative genius behind 1960’s greats The Beach Boys, Wilson has an awesome back catalogue to delve in to. While a slow start combined with poor sound meant the show took a while to get going, there was no denying its lasting impact. As ‘Surfin’ USA’ came to its long, glorious conclusion the happy vibes were being felt all over the Stradbally site.
Florence & the Machine: As one of the ‘buzz’ acts of this year’s EP, little Florence Welch had a lot of pressure on her shoulders. Not that it showed as her soaring lyrics lit up the Electric Arena.
Madness: What needs to be said about these laughing rapscallions? With the anticipation building by the minute these ageing gents finally set about showing us young ones how to party. The triumphant ‘House of Fun’ was surely a festival highlight.
The Flaming Lips: When the front man of a band decides he’s going to go walkabout over the adoring crowd while encased in a giant rubber ball you know that you’ve got a show on your hands. With the audience in his hand from start to finish Wayne Coyne ensured the weekend finished in a warm, fuzzy glow.

he news that entrepreneur Michael Wright was to open a nightclub on Dublin’s northside – at a cost of €38m – right in the middle of the country’s biggest financial crisis since the ‘80’s – seemed a little foolhardy to many. It would appear however, that this is exactly what the millionaire publican has done. Purpose built and located far from the usual nightclub spots on Dublin’s main thoroughfare, Wrights can be found in the middle of Aerside Retail Park, between a motor dealership and a homesware outlet store. However, pretty much everything to do with Wrights breaks from tradition. With a capacity for 2,000 clubbers and spread over 4 floors, Wrights also has, among other things, party spaces named New York, Miami, Los Angelas and Las Vegas, all overlooking the main dance floor and inspired 18

- it’s rumoured - by Michael’s visits to those cities. The rooms can comfortably fit 15, and are available for rent at €1,500 per night. There’s also a Live Room, featuring regular acts, a Backstage Bar running the length of the
venue, the Penthouse, which is the ultimate nod to celebrity culture, and a hidden Scarface room (so hidden, in fact, that when Irish Bartender finally stumbled up it, we never left...) Traditional menus have been replaced with LCD menu screens (very cool) and the disco ball on the main floor is the largest and most expensive in the country (we were told the builders had to remove a wall in order to install it). In addition to all of that, there’s gaming rooms, vip rooms, fantastic outdoor areas, and bartenders galore.

The scope is endless.
One would be forgiven for thinking the cost of this venture would be weighing heavily on Michael Wright’s mind, not that it seemed that way on the launch night. Dressed in his trademark designer jeans, open-necked shirt and blazer, Michael was calm, selfassured, and his usual charming self. Quick to remind Irish Bartender that the Wright Venue will employ over 150 people, Michael feels that, “entertainment 53||September May–June 2009

The Wright Bar Group owns 6 pubs and restaurants including the Bloody Stream in Howth, and the Anglers Rest, in Dublin 15. Plans for the Wright Venue don’t end with the nightclub, however, with the news that Wright has developed two additional buildings in the retail park, to include restaurants and a coffee shop. TGI Friday’s is signed up as a tenant, with a pizza outlet and coffee chain shop currently in negotiations. Fixed fare taxi deals are already in place for budget conscious clubbers and there’s even a WV

bus service, which leaves from several city centre and suburb pick up points (including Dawson Street in Dublin 2, Malahide and Castleknock), from 11pm – and returning at 2.30am – on Friday and Saturday nights. There’s also a hotel next door, perfect for finishing off a night out. The launch night – which included a showcase of everyone who’s anyone on the Irish celebrity scene – sported a ringmaster, stilt walkers and burlesque dancers, as well as Peaches Geldof on the decks, and Pixie Lott performing

included a quick snoop round the hugely popular 4 cities; take the privacy of a very plush hotel suite, the kudos of a vip booth and the fun of karaoke and you’ll get some idea of of the jewels in the crown of this venue. Each of the 4 private rooms has their own plasma screen with interactive facilities including Wii, Play Station 3, karaoke, Sky, retro Smeg fridge, air-con, hostess service and much more. Since the highly successful launch night, WV is definitely proving itself as Dublin’s newest - and most definitely coolest - place to be. With very beautiful naked dancers ‘dressed’ in gold paint on display as you walk in the entrance, this outrageously extravagent nightclub might possibly look more at home on the strip in Miami, but somehow, it works.

No Bankers Allowed The site that the Bank Bar now occupies in the oldest region of Dublin city, has been used for various businesses since Viking times. The Belfast Bank acquired the property from the British Mutual in 1892, and the interior, which was once the main banking hall, is a stunning example of merchant power, displaying an ornate setting, stained glass ceiling, mosaic tiled floors and spectacular hand carved cornicing. The Chatwood safes can be found in the basement and are now retained as a museumtype feature. Dining at the Bank is a rare treat, with lunch, early bird and dinner menus offering mouth-watering dishes. Prices start as low as €4.50 with 3 courses from the early bird menu available at €25, 4pm7pm, Monday to Friday. From what we’ve seen it isn’t hard to understand why the Bank Bar and Restaurant, College Green, was awarded Bar of the Year 2007 by Licencing World magazine.

Open every Friday and Saturday night, and available at all other times for corporate or private events, we visited Dandelion for a much needed work night out. Dandelion is located

over two floors, with the ground floor serving as a very popular bar and restaurant, while the lower ground floor is used as a nightclub. This spot certainly attract Dublin’s young and beautiful set, while the restaurant offers good quality, affordable food that’s been sourced from Irish suppliers. Dandelion is
located on the site where the now legendary Dandelion Market was once to be found, which is, of course, where U2 played their first ever gig. Sadly, there wasn’t any sign of Bono and the boys on the night we were there, but that didn’t stop us from dancing all night long to the hot DJ sounds.
