Who Are you? Overcoming identity confusion Part 1

This topic has come up so often that I wanted to share with you a little about identity, identity confusion and how to overcome it over the course of December

Who are you? Is this a question that sends you into a flat spin, leaves you with a blank expression or fills your head with an overwhelming number of possibilities?

Identity is the underlying element of who we are. It’s how we define ourselves – our sense of self. It is also how others define us – and may, particularly in relation to business be described using words such as brand or branding, personal brand or reputation

Knowing who you are is one of the most interesting journey's you can take in life. It has the potential to be filled with discovery and wonder, curiosity and amazement, purpose and potential and yet as a question "Who are you?" or more to the point "Who am I?" is referred to regularly as the one question that leaves a large majority of people feeling confused and challenged on a daily basis Recently I've been working with a new set of clients and while their challenges have been varied, the primary root cause underlying their frustrations and limitations has been confusion. Specifically self confusion which I see as potential identity crisis.

First up let's take a look at the first question to ask ourselves. "What is identity?"

It is also the sum of all of these things – who we are, our sense of self and how others define us It is all of the different roles we play – partner, parent, business owner, friend, sibling, speaker, creator, marketing manager, author, student, and employer and so on Read the full article and add your valuable comments here

Inspiration from around the world Each month we’re planning to share with you a little bit of Creative Possibility inspiration from around the world. This month we’ve been most inspired by an article by Tania de Jong, executive producer of the Creative Innovation 2012 Global Conference to be held in Melbourne, Australia 28-30 November 2012, about the importance of creativity and innovation for future success In her recent article “The Most Important Leadership Quality This Century” that appeared in the Australian Financial Review de Jong stated “We need to develop creative and courageous leaders and build a culture of innovation where failure is acceptable and successfully implemented ideas are rewarded and celebrated. Successful workplaces of the future will incorporate programs and develop an organisational culture that offers employees a voice and a greater understanding and fulfillment of their potential. Creative leadership programs will take people outside of their traditional comfort zones and lead to improved employee wellbeing, engagement and self-awareness, to increased leadership and productivity, and to a greater

ability to innovate and make a difference. In the face of competitive and economic pressures, many organisations are convinced that creativity and innovation are the keys to success. Let’s stop saying we are creative and innovative and start doing” Tania de Jong AM is a leading soprano and speaker and businesswoman Read the full article here

We love what Tania had to say and look forward to hearing about the outcomes of the conference If you’ve got something to share that you’ve found inspiring in your part of the world we’d love to hear about it. Limitless BUSINESS! Finding your Confident business voice When I first started my business a few years ago now I remember feeling quite isolated. I didn’t know many other people who were business owners and while I knew the importance of networking, the thought of getting out and meeting new people and sharing about my business when I wasn’t 100% certain what I was doing terrified me There were many reasons I was scared. One of those reasons was that I didn’t fully understand exactly who I was becoming (read the feature article about Identity Confusion on page 2!) and what I was going to do. I was clear on why I wanted to be in business and that was a great start but I wasn’t entirely happy about the prospect of meeting someone and them asking that question so many people seem to dread “What do you do?” Sometimes the question is packaged differently and it might sound something like “What’s your business?” or maybe even “What sort of clients do you work with?” Whatever costume it comes in it can still leave you feeling inadequate and a bit like a fraud when your response is to stumble over your words. I say that because I’ve heard it over and over. I hear it regularly from clients who tell me that they find it easier to avoid the questions than to appear like they don’t make enough, aren’t good enough, or worse yet, don’t have a clue what they are doing The thing I’ve learned over time is that if I invest in building my personal confidence and then link that clearly to what I offer my clients then it doesn’t matter how I answer those questions. The confidence you have in yourself will overwhelm any fear or attempts at playing small. Combine this with the business intention you set for yourself last month and you’re instantly building a confidence filled toolbox and discovering your confident business voice The things that drive our fear and the “I’m not.... enough” statements are all down to our beliefs and those beliefs drive our perspective the way we see, hear and feel things. Building your confident business voice takes a

At Creative Possibility we believe in combining your Business Intention (see our November edition for more on this) with action to express your confident business voice. What are you going to get out in the world and say this month? Share your stories with us via email at limitless@creativepossibility.com.au commitment to staying true to who you are, convicted to stand strong in what you believe in and it takes action as follow through to show you mean what you say Don’t let fear win - have fun with this and get out in the world and speak up Remember most of all it’s all about things being Limitless! so think and act big, bold and creative if you dare For more on how to blast through those I’m not... enough statements check out our feature with Brian R King on page 7!

Limitless BUSINESS! Effortless Success Business Booster! Embracing Opportunities - it’s all about saying yes Effortless Success comes from a combination of choices and action. In fact I like to say that it’s the result of committed choice followed up by committed action How did you respond the last time an opportunity came your way? Did you grab it with both hands and squeeze it really hard with joy and abundance or did you go into questioning and doubt and fear? Decembers effortless success business booster asks you to say yes to one key opportunity that comes your way each week during the month. In fact we’d like you to stretch yourself to say yes to professional opportunities that would normally make you feel like you want to run a mile The key thing is not to say yes to the detriment of you keeping your sanity at what’s already a very busy time of year. It’s about saying yes when deep down inside you know you really want to do or try something but fear usually stops you dead in your tracks Over the past few weeks I’ve been busy recording episodes for Creative Possibility: The Limitless Life, my new podcast radio show that went live on Nov 19th. Each new guest I speak with has given me an opportunity to reflect on just how important it is to say yes. If I hadn’t said yes to Web Talk Radio when they approached me to host a new show I wouldn’t have achieved one of the key goals I set myself for 2012. If my guests didn’t dare to say yes each week then they’d be missing out on valuable opportunities to promote their valuable messages

Limitless INSPIRATION! 5 Minutes With.... Brian R King It’s our pleasure this month to introduce you to an inspiring gentleman who we just had to share with you! To get to know him better we asked him our 5, “5 Minutes With” getting to know you questions and here’s what he had to share with us..... 1. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received? "Know Thyself." This is advice repeated over and over throughout the ages and the way I have used it is in the increasing realisation of what it means to be human. It is critical to fully embrace your strengths and challenges with honesty and humility. Trying to be the smartest kid in the room or making excuses regarding your challenges prevents you from seeing the opportunities to learn from and partner with others. The very people you cannot succeed in this life without. Get to know your areas of brilliance as well as the areas in which the brilliance of others is something you need to include in your formula for success. Know thyself 2. Did you make any shifts in yourself to get where you are today? How did you make them? Several, the most important of which was the refusal to be helpless. Being in a state of helplessness is terrifying and I felt that at the deepest levels while receiving cancer treatment when I was 18 years old. When my cancer was cured I resolved to never feel that helpless again. It was the leverage placed upon me by that fear that keeps me in the constant search for knowledge, resources and solutions so I never go there again 3. What do you do for yourself to increase the amount of "effortless" in your life? Mastery is the key. Whenever you master something you become so proficient you may as well have been the inventor of it. Mastery is a commitment to learning and practicing something so thoroughly that it become ingrained in everything you are and do. It becomes an essential part of how you live

4. What makes you a Limitless kinda person? I'm always a student and never an expert. Again, expertise suggests that you're the smartest kid in the room. I have yet to meet a person who has nothing to teach me. Every person, place and thing is my teacher. The limits we place upon ourselves begin with decisions about what options are available to us in life. These decisions show up in the form of "I'm not _______ enough statements" that we make to ourselves. The way to begin reversing that tendency is to begin using, "I am _________ enough" statements. You don't use these statements as an opportunity to blow sunshine or kid yourself. You use them as an opportunity to prove it. I recommend beginning with, "I am teachable enough," "I am supportable enough." These are reminders to be open to the lessons in front of you instead of always looking for opportunities to lecture and show how much you know. Limitless INSPIRATION! The Liberator Engineer Last month we introduced you to the essence of the strengths of the Inspirer Believer, on of 12 different Personal Leadership Styles that are the core of the Innate Potential Model. This month it’s time to introduce you to the Liberator Engineer; The key message and personal leadership motivation of the Liberator Engineer is to ‘break down the old and build the new’

Able to facilitate transformation for others on a big scale. Life, death and rebirth can be common themes Prone to getting ‘bolts of lightning’ happening in your life where you know something just needs to break down to move you or others forward Have the power to literally tear down the structures in your life and those of others when those structures are no longer serving a purpose A great mother to all when it comes to the re-birthing process people need to take in life – gently and lovingly supporting this transition as a great mother would Willing to step up and do what it takes to find the truth and expose the ‘authentic’ being within yourself and others

Your key innate strengths are that you Are incredibly passionate, compassionate, supportive and able to guide others to ‘re-birth’ Connected to your body on an energetic scale. You may be comfortable with sensing or feeling things from the perspective of your body ~ “I just feel it” or “I feel it in my stomach (or another body area or part)” Able to gently and appropriately break down the ego of others. This is not done out of malice or any wish to create ill-will for others Able to handle anger, passion, destructive forces, big experiences, extremes of emotion
