AMANDA O’BRYAN

Paintings from the Aesthetes Exhibition December 2025

Welcome to this catalogue, a curated collection of my works from the Aesthetes Group exhibition in December 2024, at the Leda Gallery, Newcastle NSW and presented by the New Artists Collective.

As a reflection of my creative practice, this body of work explores themes in the intricate rhythmic healing of nature, and flowers as nature’s storytellers. It has been a privilege to bring these pieces together, and I’m delighted to share them with you—whether you’ve followed my journey as a collector or are discovering my art for the first time.

As an artist based in the Hunter Valley region of NSW, my practice bridges drawing and painting botanical style watercolours and expressive semi-abstraction. Evoking a sensitivity to the Impressionist painters of the late 1800’s with painterly brushstrokes and flowery colour and light, I have focused on my botanical motifs to capture the duplicity of chaos, urgency, beauty and grace in flowers.

Flowers, in particular, have been a constant source of inspiration—a deeply personal and feminist subject. The tradition of women painting flowers began centuries ago, when women painted flowers for the scientific study of botany and healing.

But in the 18th century, women’s roles in studying, painting, and drawing flowers were reduced to motherly pursuits or idle pastimes when the patriarchal influence at the time, deemed it a professional science beyond the realm of women.

What was once a domain of knowledge, healing, and artistic expression became trivialised, and so the act of painting flowers was relegated to a “suitable” pastime for women—a hobby rather than an art form.

This Aesthetes body of work reclaims this narrative and marks a stylistic departure in my painting practice, one I’ve embodied wholeheartedly. Responding to my immediate natural environment with fresh eyes and collaborating with a group of inspiring women artist friends all part of the New Artists Collective has been a joy.

Every painting is a pathway to the next and I cannot wait to invite you down nature’s path with in my Aesthetes paintings.

Thank you for taking the time to explore this catalogue. I hope these works resonate with you, and inspire your own storytelling and moments of connection and healing in nature.
