State-Of-The-Art Field & Track

Alumni Stadium got a facelift in 2012. The expansion and renovation project included a new synthetic turf field and an international-calibre eight-lane track. This Revolution turf product from Fieldturf is the number one football field in North America and the main choice of professional teams. The alternating greens and distinctive red and black checkerboard end zones will be much talked about.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Expectations are high for the Gryphons entering the 2013 campaign following one of their best regular season finishes in school history with a 7-1 regular season record, good for second place. In the Yates Cup final the Gryphons fell to the defending national champion McMaster Marauders (30-13). This year the team hopes it’s their time to take the next step. Guelph enters the 2013 season with a veteran-laden lineup featuring 16 possible starters from last year’s and a promising group of recruits prepared to suit up in the red, black and gold.

Offensively,

the Gryphons boast a balanced attack. Running back Rob Farquharson, 2012 OUA second team all-star returns for his fourth year after a breakthrough season. He was third CIS, rushing 150 times for 936 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Meanwhile, quarterback Jazz Lindsey is set to embark on his second full season as a starter with a core of veteran receivers including clutch ball catchers Dillon Dimitroff and Carl Trivieri. Lindsey’s growth as a quarterback has been significant each season. In 2012 he recorded

Gryphon Football 2013 - 14

squad

in the

128 completions on 228 attempts for 1,604 total yards and 12 touchdowns. Dimitroff is back with the Gryphons for his final season of eligibility and will once again be one of Jazz Lindsey’s favourite targets. Last year he led the team in receiving, tallying 330 yards on 29 receptions and earned his first-ever OUA all-star nod. This offence has the potential to start nine fifth year players, all of which will be relied on heavily for veteran leadership. Once again the Gryphons have recruited top notch players from across Canada. Expectations are high for first year running back’s Mason Swift from Sooke, BC., Johnny Augustine from Welland, Ont., and Bryson Dobush joining the Gryphons from Sherwood Park, AB.

Defensively, the Gryphons will be hard-pressed to top last year’s outstanding performance after losing a number of

fifth year players, however if anyone is up to the task it will be third-year John Rush. The middle linebacker led the team in 2012 and finished second in the OUA with 55 total tackles, four sacks and two interceptions. Rush and teammate Jeff Finley played in this summers East West Bowl and will both be relied on to guide the Gryphons defensive efforts. Defensive lineman Jeff Finley will be entering his third season with the Gryphons. He recorded 23 tackles and three sacks last year and will be looking to continue his exceptional play in 2013. Looking to fill the void from this number of outstanding Gryphons who graduated from last season are some of the nation’s best and talented recruits. Defensive back Jadon Johnson joins the team from St. Marguerite D’Youville in Brampton, Ont. The future Gryphon played for Team Ontario West in 2011 and 2012 and is a 2012 OVFL All-Star with the Brampton Bulldogs. Another defensive back looking to make his mark will be Orion Edwards from Newmarket High School. He was a two time GTA and York Region Athletic Association All-Star. The linebacking core will be looking to Derek Drouillard from St. Thomas Aquinas in London, Ont. to make an immediate impact. He graduated high school as a city champion and a 2012 OVFL Varsity champion as a London Jr. Mustang. He also played in the 2012 Canada Cup for Team Ontario West where he won a bronze medal. The Gryphons are expecting to continue dominating the special teams matchups after a very successful 2012 campaign. Guelph was the only team in the OUA to receive OUA all-star status last season for both coverage personnel with Cam Walker and returning personnel with A’dre Fraser. Rush Cover Cam Walker will be returning to the Gryphons for his third year of eligibility. He was named a 2012 OUA firstteam all-star after tallying 24 special teams tackles as well as two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Meanwhile, returner A’dre Fraser was a breakout star rookie earning OUA first-team all-star status after returning 30 punts for 327 yards, in addition to averaging 24 yards per kickoff return. With their strong core of returning players, impressive new recruiting class and confidence riding high from last season the Gryphons are looking to once again be OUA contenders.

Coming off the best Gryphon season ever there is a lot of excitement and high expectation going into 2013. A large group of our core players have trained hard during the off-season supported by our new full-time Strength & Conditioning Coach and Assistant Trainer. With another excellent crop of recruits we remain a young and aggressive team with most of our players just going into year two or three. The talent on our team continues to improve but we are looking for leaders to fill the gap left by our exceptional group of graduates. Head Coach, Stu Lang gryphons.ca
