CREATING VISUAL AND STIMULATING LEARNING ENVIRONMENTs

For CIT CCAD’S Creativity and Change programme the process and concept of learning is much more that transferal of knowledge. It’s about connecting with one’s own passion motivation and connecting with others. By combining creativity with learning we support learners to connect their head, hands and hearts. This is central to our concept of nurturing active global citizenship. So exploring values attitudes, behaviour and action is as important as engaging with knowledge. For the Erasmus+ Empathy 2 Action youth workers training, we wanted to create a rich learning environment that would suit a range of learning styles and allow people to engage on a range of levels and from a range of perspectives. The lounge was our home base. The portraits gallery on the wall added to the homely feel of everyone belonging. It was a space for engaging with, reflecting on and gathering and processing ideas. It was also the base to harvest all the ideas and concepts of the programme. Harvesting documented the journey of the week from the concept of empathy to action for change and mapped the progress and connections between the concepts. The harvesting gave participants the chance to choose to switch off from taking notes and to be in the moment with their thoughts knowing it was being recorded for them. It acted as a echo. The Living room was more of an action space, to experiment, research, try things out, prototype ideas and gather tool for practice, to chat over ideas The garden space was conceived as a space that that people could have a quiet moment for themselves or an informal exchange with peers. The quiet moments or exchanges allow for recharging over a coffee. It was a space that learning could land, or sink in. It was exciting to have the opportunity to take over a unused space in the city and fulfil a vision of a rich creative learning environment. It required a lot of effort in advance of the event but when there is access to a rich learning environment, it opens give more autonomy and opportunity for self direction to the learner and can contribute as much to the learning experience as the programme design. This document shares the flavour of the learning environment and the journey as it was harvested on the surrounding walls.
