Grow your Sparkling Crystals What’s in the Sparkling Crystals Kit?

WARNING: This is not a toy. This is intended to be an educational kit which demonstrates a science principle in a fun way. All assembly and operation of the project should be done and supervised by an adult or aged 14 and up. Read all instructions before you start. Not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts. Choking hazard. This set contains chemicals that may be harmful if misused. Read cautions on individual containers carefully. CAUTION! Contains some chemicals that are classified as safety hazards. Read the instructions before use, follow them and keep them for reference. Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with any part of the body, particularly the mouth and eyes. Keep small children and animals away from experiments. Store the chemicals out of reach of small children.

Instructions •

O

nce you have gathered all material, follow the steps in the printed instructions booklet/ leaflet. Make sure your mum or dad is watching over while you do this so that you can reach out to them when you need. FIRST AID If chemical or solution contacts skin, immediately rinse with soap and water. If chemical or solution contacts eye, immediately rinse with large amount of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation occurs, seek medical attention. If chemical is inhaled, breathe fresh air. If symptom occurs, seek medical attention. If chemical or crystal, or solution is swallowed, immediately rinse mouth with water, drink large quantity of milk or water, and seek medical attention or call your poison control centre. CONTENTS 1 x large bag containing white crystals* (a base compound called Monoammonium Phosphate), 3 x small bag containing coloured crystal seeding mixture*, 1 x container, 1 x seeding spoon, detailed instructions. Also needed, but not included in this kit: a jar of steaming hot water, an apron, protective goggles, and rubber gloves. *Important Remarks: 1. The different coloured seeding mixtures contain the following chemicals: White seeding: Aluminium Potassium Sulphate. Blue seeding: Aluminium Potassium Sulphate, Sodium Chloride & Brilliant Blue FCF. Red seeding: Aluminium Potassium Sulphate & Amaranth. Please be aware that the red and blue seeding mixtures are intense colours. While they help produce beautiful crystals, take care not to spill any coloured solution or seeding mixture! While any stains on your skin would be temporary, they may leave permanent stains on some clothing or surfaces. Therefore, please wear an apron and washing up gloves when handling coloured seeding mixtures. Cover the work surface with old newspaper, and clean it after the experiment. Dispose of the coloured solution and unused seeding mixtures properly, to avoid staining the washing sink/drain. 2. The white crystal compound (Monoammonium Phosphate) is hygroscopic: it tends to "capture"humidity contained in the air, and this phenomenon creates links between crystals. The material may become hard (due to caking), but can very easily be separated afterwards, rather like sugar.

Your Instructions Your Crystals

A. INSTRUCTIONS Adult supervision is required at all times. Take great care with hot water and solutions. Be careful when handling your crystals, as the spines are very sharp and easily broken!

Watch this video on how to make a Sunprint. https://youtu.be/_7rNd2hVhwo Step 1: Open the kit and get ready Open the Sunprint kit, take out the acrylic sheet and a single sheet of Sunprint paper. Make sure you keep rest of the sheets in the packet to avoid exposing them to sunlight.

Step 2: Place leaves or objects Put down the Sunprint sheet flat on the floor and place the acrylic sheet on the top. If you chose flat objects to print then place them between the paper and acrylic sheets. If you chose 3D objects then put the acrylic sheet on the paper first and then put the objects on the top.

Step 3: Expose them to Sunlight Expose the whole assembly to the

sunlight for 3-5 mins. and notice the sun print paper changing colour to light blue. You should be able to see the print of the chosen object appearing on the paper.

Step 4: Give it a water bath Take the paper to a water tray and dip the paper in water for 1 min. You will observe the Sunprint turning dark blue. Now take the paper out of water and pat dry with a towel.

Step 5: Iron your Sunprint Flatten the paper by either putting it in a thick book for a couple of days or ironing it between two kitchen towels. Congratulations, your own sun print masterpiece is now Ready!

Gouldian Flinch - Australian Rainbow Bird

The Gouldian finch (Erythrura gouldiae), also known as the Lady Gouldian finch, Gould’s finch or the rainbow finch, is a colourful passerine bird which is native to Australia. Both boys and girls are brightly coloured with black, green, yellow, and red markings. The girls tend to be less brightly coloured. One major difference between them is that the boys’ chest is purple, while the girls’ is a lighter mauve. Once found across northern Australia in their millions, in recent decades the population of the Gouldian Finch, has declined dramatically to an estimated 2,500 adults only. The species now only occurs in the Kimberley and the Northern Territory, although it is occasionally recorded in Queensland. Help protect them! Adult Size: 5 to 6 inches Age: 6 to 8 years Total World Population: 2,500 years Food: Grass, Seeds, Insects, Fruits and Vegetables 22 of 24
