K. FUN FACTS
4
When you switch on your Box Robot you make a 'circuit', which connects the battery to the electric motor inside the gearbox housing. Electrical energy flows from the battery to the motor, which converts this energy into a rotating mechanical force. The rotating force of the motor axle turns at a very high speed but with little power and on its own would not be able to move the Robot. Inside the gearbox housing, the motor turns a series of gears which slow the speed and increase the power of the motor's mechanical force making it more useful. Most common machines use a gearbox to change the power and speed of a force in this way.
4
The Robot's main axle turns. The two large wheels and the legs of the Robot are connected to the wheels with two pegs. The pegs are fitted to the outer edge of the wheels and as the wheels rotate the pegs go up and down and move the legs. The two pegs are fixed opposite each other on the two wheels so that as one peg rises, the peg on the other wheel lowers, giving the legs a walking action. 41-03389/1 170323

Each moving leg is connected to an arm with a peg so that the up and down force of the leg is transferred to the arm and it also moves. This type of mechanism is called a 'linkage'. The arm is fixed to the body with a peg which acts like a 'pivot' and allows the arm to rotate in a limited way. Linkages and pivots are important mechanisms and are found in many machines. Filling the Sand
Using Skewer
Sealing Bottle
Place the funnel over the bottle’s opening. Make sure the bottle is sitting tight so it doesn’t move while filling the sand. Use a spoon to pour the sand in the bottle. Start with your choice of colours. Repeat this step for multiple colours.
After every colour, use the skewers to make sure there are no empty pockets. Push the skewer down in the middle of the bottle and tap the bottle gently. Repeat this step after using every colour.
Fill the bottle up to the top. Let the sand settle in using gentle taps and the skewers. Pour little craft glue on to the bottle opening and use a skewer to mix the glue with the sand on the top. Let it sit for 5-10 mins and then put the bottle cap.
