earn how to make a snowflake using borax and a few other easy to find household items. Find out how crystals are formed in this fun crystal activity, experiment with food colouring to enhance the look and keep your finished crystal snowflake as a great looking decoration! Step 1: Get Ready
Gather all the material required and use a flat surface like a table or a bench to do the activity. Keep the kitchen towel handy in case of spillage. Make sure your have an adult watching over in case you need help.
Step 2: Making the Star
Grab the white pipe cleaner and cut it into three sections of the same size. Stack these sections and twist in the centre. Spread the sides evenly so that you now have a shape that looks like a six-sided star. Make sure the points of your shape are even by trimming them to the same length. Cut another pipe cleaner into small pieces (1/3 of the size of the earlier sections). Twist these smaller sections around each end of the star. Open them to make a Y shape at the end. Refer to the video to follow the steps.

Make your own Crystal Snowflakes Step 3: Making the Star Hanger
Attach a piece of string to the top end of one side of the Star. The length of the string will depend on the depth of your jar. Tie the other end of the string to the small wooden rod. Place your star in the empty jar to make sure the length of your string is correct. The Star should hang freely in the middle of the jar.
Step 4: Fill hot water
With the help of an adult, boil one cup water. Carefully fill the jar with boiling water (you might want to get an adult to help with this part). Make sure the jar is filled 3 quarters to the top. Depending on the size of the jar you can increase or decrease the amount of water required.
Step 5: Making the Borax solution
For each cup of water add three tablespoons of borax, adding one tablespoon at a time. Stir until the mixture is dissolved but don’t worry if some of the borax settles at the base of the jar. If you are using a bigger jar adjust the quantity of water and borax in the proportion 1:3.
Step 6: Colour your crystal
Add some of the optional food colouring to give your snowflake a nice colour. You can also choose to leave it white. Now your borax solution is ready.
Step 7: The final step
Hang the Star into the jar so that the small wooden rod is resting on the mouth of the jar and the star is sitting freely in the borax solution.
Step 8: It’s time to wait
Leave the snowflake overnight in a cool place and when you return in the morning you will find the snowflake covered in crystals! It makes a great decoration that you can show your friends or hang somewhere in your house.

Explaination •
What’s happening? Crystals are made up of molecules arranged in a repeating pattern that extends in all three dimensions. Borax is also known as sodium borate, it is usually found in the form of a white powder made up of colourless crystals that are easily dissolved in water. When you add the borax to the boiling water you can dissolve more than you could if you were adding it to cold water, this is because warmer water molecules move around faster and are more spread apart, allowing more room for the borax crystals to dissolve. When the solution cools, the water molecules move closer together and it can’t hold as much of the borax solution. Crystals begin to form on top of each other and before you know it you have your completed crystal snowflake!
