CENTER FOR EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS
PERFORMANCE FEEDBACK CULTURE STUDY An Invitation for CRF and PARC Members We would like to invite you to participate in an important new study that is jointly sponsored by the Center for Effective Organizations (CEO) and the Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp).
Background For decades, performance management research has focused almost exclusively on techniques. Techniques include how to set goals, how many points to use on the rating scale (or whether to use one), how often to meet with employees, how to assess performance, what software to use, and so on – the list is endless. Techniques evolve, but repeatedly we find marginal improvements at best from adopting new techniques. We are investigating a promising approach that focuses on how to create a strong performance feedback culture – one in which managers feel compelled to provide regular, high quality feedback to employees. Companies with such a culture tend to have effective performance management processes regardless of the techniques they use. Conversely, companies with a weak performance feedback culture tend to have ineffective processes, even if they use all the latest techniques. Our study will examine the importance of performance feedback culture as well as what companies can do to create an effective culture.
How to Participate We are looking for one person to participate from each company. You may wish to coordinate with others to determine who from your company is the most appropriate person to complete the survey. An information sheet that provides details about the study, data confidentiality, and uses of the data is at http://ceoprogram.usc.edu/downloads/consent/PFCS/PFC_Study_Information_Sheet_8_3_17.pdf. Alice Yee Mark at CEO (yeemark@marshall.usc.edu or 1.213.740.9814) can answer any other questions you may have about the study. The on-line survey may be taken here: https://uscmarshall.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0kwDJ7FLYuBVg8t. Completing the survey will take about 12-15 minutes. The survey will be open during September 2017.
Benefits of Participating All participating companies will receive a report providing the frequencies, means, and standard deviations for all items in the survey approximately four weeks after the conclusion of data collection. CEO and i4cp will generate a comprehensive report in 2018, and the data will be used for articles, presentations, and webinars that will be made available to all study participants. If we receive enough data from CRF and PARC members, we will do a special analysis comparing UK and US responses that we will distribute through CRF and PARC. Thank you very much for your participation in this exciting project.
