Our thriving partnership with St Marks Academy has offered work experience to over forty 6th Form students in MTCT schools since November 2012. All 6th Form pupils from St Marks attended 'reading mentors' training and some also volunteer for the after school Study Support provision offering academic help to younger primary pupils with great success.
Parent Support Advisor Network The Cluster Development Manager regularly meets with the school PSA’s offering them support and guidance. These meetings proved to be a fantastic hub for networking, fundraising and introduction to a number of work professionals and partner agencies.
Staff Continuous Professional Development (CPD) The Cluster is committed to sharing resources and good practice by putting on a series of twilights and shorter
training courses for teaching and support staff. We are looking forward to our first Joint Inset day in February 2016.
Adult and Family Learning We have partnered for the fifth year with Merton Adult Education to deliver adult and family learning sessions. These included First Aid, Passport to work, Food Safety, Family Arts and Mission X game creation workshops. We also offered budgeting courses and a Job Club in partnership with Jeremiah Project and CAP. Upon course completion, we noticed a number of people enrolling to other learning courses and searching for employment which was very pleasing to see.

Having been successful in its bid to the SHINE Trust for the second time, and with support from Circle Housing, Mercers Company and Wimbledon Foundation, the main aim of the SHINE project is to continue to deliver learning opportunities on a Saturday and give the chance to sixty 9-10 yr old pupils (approx. 10 per each Cluster school) to take part in enrichment activities aimed at raising attainment. SHINE offers six hours of study support and enrichment at Bond Primary School on 25 Saturdays per year, targeting predominantly disadvantaged students. Activities include professional coaching, educational trips, theatre workshops, SATs revision and free lunch. SHINE curriculum is overseen and devised by a fully qualified and experienced senior teacher. Amongst many other opportunities, our students took part in the Truce workshops and live performance at the New Wimbledon Theatre in July 2015. Shine Merton was a chosen charity at the 2015 Wimbledon’s Gentlemen’s tennis final.

Shine Summer School Mitcham Town Cluster, Sustainable Merton and Attic Theatre partnered up to deliver Shine taster and transition summer holiday course in order to promote the initiative and offer an opportunity to new recruits to taste the SHINE experience and engage in positive activities before their official enrolment in September; in addition we offered over 30 graduates a chance to come back and work on their
confidence skills through drama to help them settle into secondary school. Over 70 places were offered to students from 9 local schools (8 primaries and 1 special) for the SHINE taster and transition programme during the first week of summer holidays. The programme covered health and wellbeing topics, gardening, cooking, sports and drama activities. The week escalated into an Exhibition of work during the final day with guests including families and teachers. Attendance has been excellent on the whole with a high number of peer mentors which is very encouraging. The feedback we received from stakeholders and sponsors was very positive. The project was supported by East Merton Health and Wellbeing grant and Mayor of Merton.
The Innovation Hub The Hub was officially launched by Professor Rosie Raffety in July 2015 creating an innovative platform for teacher collaboration, academic and action research. The launch followed the £68,000 award from the London Schools Excellence Fund to deliver a Masters programme for teachers in Leadership and Innovation. MTCT has so far supported 20 teacher researchers through the MA programme in partnership with University of West London and the Academy for Innovation. The first final MA papers were presented at the recent PAN London Conference '15 at the UWL with great success. Professor Rosie Raffety, Celia Dawson and Emily Watt presented the MA Cluster Model at the prestigious APPERA Conference in Hong Kong on 19th Nov 2014.
Cluster Study Support Centre The Study Support Centre based at Cricket Green 6th Form is a joint project, creating a partnership amongst all schools from the Mitcham Town Cluster.
The Centre has been designed to provide a stimulating, modern high-tech teaching environment. The high ratio of adults to young people enables development of confidence boosting relationships between students and mentors and ensures rapid progress and key skills development. The programme is currently working on school referral basis and focusing on offering specially tailored study support and enrichment courses. All sessions are supported by a fully trained Lead Tutor, teaching assistants and St Marks Academy Ambassadors.
Peer Mentor Training SHINE Merton continued to offer Peer Mentor training opportunities in September 2015. The in-house training was designed for older students to learn how to support younger pupils during SHINE sessions by passing on their experience and sharing their knowledge and skills. Selected SHINE graduates were invited to come back, train and volunteer in SHINE sessions subject to successful completion of the training course. We had a fantastic response from students and parents which was excellent to see and currently have a group of ten trained volunteers.
Cooking School for Graduates funded by Mitcham Youth Partnership Successfully running for the fourth year, the course is designed for all SHINE Peer mentors and secondary student volunteers as an opportunity for personal and practical skills development. The
Cooking School runs for 30 weeks per year every Friday at Cricket Green School. We currently have ten young people (aged 12-18) from various backgrounds, including some students with special educational needs.
Healthy Schools London Borough of Merton, Mitcham Town Community Trust and Jeremiah Project have recently partnered up to deliver Healthy Schools programme funded by Merton Public Health. The aim is to improve the health of our residents and, over the next five years reduce the inequalities in health outcomes between the east and west of Merton. We have successfully overseen delivery of a number of intervention programmes such as Play Therapy, Easy Cook and ‘You are Special, you are Safe’.
Mitcham in View Mitcham Town Community Trust invited talented young people who live in Mitcham to take part in the Mitcham In View Heritage project and capture local life with professional support. Pupils had an opportunity to choose local area sites, including special events or just the everyday things that happen as part of day-to-day life in Mitcham. All photos have been featured in a special interactive exhibition, and the creative journey documented in a form of a video presentation at St Mark’s Academy as part of Mitcham Town Community Trust’s Celebration event in Feb 15. Project was funded by Circle Housing Community Grant.
