London Borough of Merton 25th February 2016 Celebrating success in Mitcham schools A special ceremony was held last night (25 Feb) to recognise students and staff from Mitcham schools on their successes over the past year. The event, held at St Mark’s Academy, Mitcham was attended by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung and cabinet member for education, Councillor Martin Whelton who both handed out awards and gave speeches. This is the fourth year in which the schools have come together to recognise their achievements. Awards were given to staff and pupils on the night and students from Cranmer Primary and St Thomas of Canterbury school choirs sang for guests. Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung, said: “It’s great to see so many young people and staff celebrating their accomplishments at an uplifting ceremony. Everyone involved in the Mitcham Town Cluster can be proud of the work they are doing to make students reach their full potential.” Merton’s cabinet member for education, Councillor Martin Whelton, said: “The celebration was an inspirational event with many young people and staff being recognised for their achievements along with the contribution they have made to their school and community over the past year. I would like to congratulate them all. The Mitcham schools cluster is a pioneering example of schools collaborating with each other which has included building stronger links with the local community along with extending the range of learning opportunities available to our young people and staff”. Kristina Burton, Mitcham Town Community Trust Development and Project Manager said: “It is a true pleasure being a part of such united group of schools and inspirational leaders. I am very proud of all our achievements and look forward to offering even wider range of new and exciting learning opportunities to the whole community.” Notes to editors The Mitcham Town Community Trust (MTCT) consists of 11 schools and two community groups from Mitcham that support young people and families to reach their full potential whilst also helping to offer wider community access to facilities and activities. It’s members are Benedict Primary School, Bond Primary School, Cranmer Primary School, Cricket Green School, Haslemere Primary School, Jeremiah Project, Liberty Primary School, Melbury College, SS Peter and Paul RC Primary School, St Thomas of Canterbury RC Primary School, St Marks Family Centre, St Marks C of E Academy and St Marks Primary.
