YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE YPL.VIC.CRICKET.COM.AU
WELCOME
With the new season comes the excitement and thrill of the 2018-19 Youth Premier League. Over the upcoming months, the Cricket Victoria YPL will be hosted at grounds across the state now at under-14, under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels. We have revised our junior high-performance system, so our 16 teams are playing more cricket than ever before but with less travel. The YPL concludes with the Youth Super Series which gives additional match opportunities for the outstanding performers. We are excited to develop the next crop of Australian superstars and the YPL and the YSS are great pathways for us to achieve this. I wish to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, affiliates and their representatives from across Victoria, whose tireless work to support the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. I would also like to congratulate this season’s young men and women representatives who are contesting the Youth Premier League. We wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of success but above else enjoy your cricket… play hard, play fair, and play brave.

UNDER 18 MALE YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE 2018-19 | CRICKET VICTORIA
PLAY HARD PLAY FAIR PLAY BRAVE Congratulations on your selection for your team! Playing in the Youth Premier League is an exciting opportunity for you to challenge yourself and test your might against the best cricketers from around the state. It is important you enjoy the competition and make a positive impact on your team and your teammates both on and off the field. But above all else play brave. “Play Brave” is a phase that will be repeated many times throughout your cricket journey and your time around this game we all love, with your coaches, your teammates, and your family there to support you. For cricketers young and old, the notion of play brave can mean different things to different players. For the YPL, “play brave” is to encourage you to play your best and try your hardest, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year with the enjoyment of the game which will drive you. Throughout this competition season there will be moments of brilliance, there will be times where you exceed your own expectations, and there will be times you may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. The important thing to remember is to always make a total effort. Even when the odds are against you, look for how you can impact the game and support your team. Because one player can be a crucial ingredient on a team. But one player cannot make a team. For some the YPL will be a thrill of being involved with the elite junior cricket competition in the state, for your teams the goal will be progressing to the finals, and for others their strong performances may result in them being selected for the Youth Super Series and state team trials. But while a trophy carries dust, the memories you make during the Youth Premier League will last you forever. With that in mind, give it your all, enjoy your cricket and play brave, and all the best for the Youth Premier League.

Had ‘the talk’ yet? Betting and sport don’t have to go together. As a parent, there’s a lot of ‘talks’. There’s the big one, of course. And then there’s the gambling one, the one you have because many teens mistakenly think that betting is a normal part of the game. Help your kids understand the risks.

ROCKETING ONTO THE NATIONAL RADAR AFTER SMASHING ENGLAND BOWLERS IN A TOUR MATCH, MELBOURNE RENEGADES TEENAGER MACKENZIE HARVEY IS LIVING HIS CRICKET DREAM. Harvey became the youngest ever KFC BBL contracted player when he was signed during BBL|07 as a replacement player for Renegades captain Aaron Finch, who was called up to the Australian One-Day squad.
E I Z N E K C A M Y E V R HA 6
“It was surreal to be on the Melbourne Renegades roster last season. I’m a Renegades fan too, so it was like a dream come true,” Harvey said. After the 18-year-old blasted a quickfire 59 off 48 balls against the touring England one-day side in January 2018, shortly followed up by a classy 136 from 130 balls playing for Australia’s Under-19 side, Harvey has put himself on the fast track towards higher honours. While he didn’t take the crease during the Renegades final few games in BBL|07, the teenager enjoyed his time amongst professionals and the experiences that came with it. “Cameron White is someone I’ve always looked up to and grew up watching for Victoria and Australia, so to see how he goes about his training and match preparation was unbelievable,” Harvey said.
“I can’t wait to push for selection in the Renegades side this season.” With hopes of one day pulling on the Baggy Green, Harvey has also been signed as part of the Victorian Men’s Cricket Team’s new youth brigade for season 2018-19. “Playing for Victoria has been a dream of mine for a long time,” Harvey said. “I was ecstatic when I found out I got a contract for this season. It’s an incredible opportunity to keep developing my game and I’m going to make the most of it!” The South East Bayside product is still quick to remember the lessons he learned in the Victorian youth system and is excited for the new Youth Premier League. “Playing for the Breakers was some of the best times of my cricket journey so far. I was able to hone my batting against some of the best young bowlers in the country,” Harvey said. “The new YPL sounds like an exciting new venture, and I’m sure it will be great for future players coming through and their development. “Anytime you can play more games against elite competition will always make you better.”

A TERRIBLE CRICKET INNINGS, BUT A ROAD TOLL WE SHOULD AIM FOR. Last year, 259 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Thousands more suffered serious, often life changing injuries. Together with Cricket Victoria and the broader Victorian community, the TAC is working towards our long term goal to achieve zero road deaths and serious injuries. This vision is called Towards Zero.

EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE For over a decade Steve Brodie has been involved with junior cricket in Victoria, from being a parent watching his son go through the pathway, to now being a coach and administrator. But the Knights coach is excited for the upcoming Youth Premier League which he believes is going to help produce the next crop of cricket superstars. “The YPL is reflective of the way the cricket landscape is going,” Brodie said. “We need players who are multi-faceted, who can take the game on with both bat and ball, who are dynamic in the field and the YPL will teach players these skills... younger players will get to experience both formats of the game, the T20 and the longer format… it will be quite challenging but quite rewarding for them and really encourage them to play brave.” The YPL is promoting a mantra of ‘play brave’ for the entire season, encouraging players of all ages to believe in their abilities and to take their opportunities. Brodie has seen firsthand where this renewed focus will produce sensational cricket. “Naturally there is always a fear of getting out which may hamper these young players because they want to play well… the beauty of ‘play brave’ is the players get to go and play freely whilst taking responsibility throughout key moments of the match,” Brodie said. “As coaches we try and instil this attitude in them… where they don’t have that fear in their minds.” One of the positive changes for the YPL is having teams play more often against the elite competition. With the increase in match opportunities, Brodie believes this change will have a positive impact on the player’s development and confidence. “We get to spend more time with the kids now which is really exciting,” Brodie said. “Now in the YPL because there are more games and spaced over a longer period, if a player has an off day he can regroup reflect and come back and be a better player and perform better… this way they are not down on confidence for the rest of the tournament.” Confidence is crucial to any cricketer’s psyche no matter their age, their grade, or their skills. The YPL has introduced ‘player only’ zones at grounds to encourage players to enjoy their cricket and their time with their teammates without facing outside pressures impacting their cricket. “There is pressure internally but also externally from parents, grandparents, friends, people looking and watching which is only natural… now with these ‘player only’ zones in place, it will be just the players and our coaching staff,” Brodie said. “It gives us a space to sit and talk about what is happening on the field, what we can do next time in that situation, and it’s an athlete-centred approach... the new zones are going to be great for the player’s development and creating a positive environment.” The YPL season culminates with the Youth Super Series pitting the best players of the season against one another. “The Youth Super Series is where we get to see the best young players together as a team and gives them an opportunity to test themselves against the very best,” Brodie said. “This is a positive experience for the players because they get to see what they have to work on to get better as they continue to develop.” But at the end of the day Steve Brodie has loved his time being involved with helping to develop Australia’s next cricket heroes and can’t wait for the YPL to get underway. “Over the years I have develop my own skills set, I have broadened my skills as a person and as a communicator, but also as my skills as a coach. “I’ve got to not only coach some incredible cricketers but also coach against some incredible cricketers… I remember playing against Mackenzie Harvey, we had him out for five in a semi-final but dropped him, he went on to score 139… I look forward to seeing him play for Australia one day. “There are some who will be resistant to change, but they are all positive changes and I can’t wait for the YPL to get underway.”

ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN, TRAVIS DEAN IS READY TO SHOWCASE HIS TALENT ON THE ICONIC MCG IN HIS FIRST SEASON FOR THE MELBOURNE STARS.
“I knew I had the ability to make an impact in the shorter forms of the game and scoring a century against South Australia really instilled a lot more belief in myself and my game.”
For Victorian opening batter Travis Dean, the prospect of playing for the Melbourne Stars in BBL|08 is a massive step towards achieving another career goal.
The level-headed opening batsman also believes his opportunity with the Melbourne Stars will provide the perfect platform to plead his case for potential higher honours.
“I can’t wait to pull on the Stars guernsey for the first time and represent the biggest team in Melbourne,” Dean said.
“I can’t wait to test myself against some of the best bowlers from not only Australia but from around the world,” Dean said.
“I’ve played plenty of cricket at the MCG for Victoria in recent years, which has been a dream come true, but the thought of playing in front of a packed crowd for the Stars gives me chills.
“I’ll admit I might be full of nervous energy and adrenaline when I take guard the first time. Thinking about it reminds me of when I used to square up as a kid, I can’t wait to have that feeling again.”
“It’s been a whirlwind 12 months, but I’m excited for what this season and the future has in store.”
The former Western Spirit batsman remembers his time rising through the ranks of the Victorian pathway system fondly.
After bursting on to the scene in October 2015 when he became the first man to score an unbeaten century in each innings of his Sheffield Shield debut, Dean has continued to toil his craft for the Victorian Men’s Cricket Team against both the red and white ball. Not one renowned for his ability to score in a hurry, Dean was a revelation in Victoria’s JLT One-Day Cup side last season. “Playing in the one-day side was sensational,” Dean said.
“I loved my time with the Western Spirit. The comradery you build out on the field with teammates is fantastic and sticks with you forever,” said Dean. “Playing more games and spending more time at the crease against the best players of your age will only improve your skills as you grow and continue with senior cricket, so I’m excited for the guys coming through the YPL now and the opportunities ahead of them. “These players will be the next crop of elite Stars and Renegades players.”

PACE BOWLER WELFARE
PACE BOWLERS TO BE LIMITED TO
• U13
Four overs maximum each spell* & Eight overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)
• U15
Allow 4-6 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Five overs maximum each spell* & twelve overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)
Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.
• U17
Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)
• U19
Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell
MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture
1. AGE
2. WORKLOAD
• Growing bones
• Understand
are more susceptible to injury • Spinal bones don’t fully mature until the mid 20’s
previous loads • Plan & Monitor
3. TECHNIQUE 35º
for each individual • Avoid large load spikes
Counter-rotation Greater than 35º is a risk
• The existing guidelines are complex and can result in young bowlers not getting the consistent bowling through a week that they require for their physical and technical development
