WELCOME
It’s time for a thrilling new season of the Youth Premier League. After a successful first year, the second season of YPL will see the competition hosted at grounds across the state now at under-14, under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels. I’d like to thank all of the players, parents and families for your support of our changes to this pathway which,we hope, will continue to deliver a better cricket experience for everyone involved. The YPL concludes with the Youth Super Series which gives additional match opportunities for the outstanding performers. It is our role and responsibility to help develop the next crop of Australian superstars and the YPL and the YSS are great pathways for us to achieve this. I’d like to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, Victorian cricket country and metro affiliates and their Club and Association representatives from across Victoria, whose ongoing support for the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. I would also like to congratulate this season’s young men and women representatives who are contesting the Youth Premier League. We wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of personal and team success.

PLAY HARD PLAY FAIR PLAY BRAVE Congratulations on your selection for your team! Playing in the Youth Premier League is an exciting opportunity for you to challenge yourself and test your might against the best cricketers from around the state. It is important you enjoy the competition and make a positive impact on your team and your teammates both on and off the field. But above all else play brave. “Play Brave” is a phase that will be repeated many times throughout your cricket journey and your time around this game we all love, with your coaches, your teammates, and your family there to support you. For cricketers young and old, the notion of play brave can mean different things to different players. For the YPL, “play brave” is to encourage you to play your best and try your hardest, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year with the enjoyment of the game which will drive you. Throughout this competition season there will be moments of brilliance, there will be times where you exceed your own expectations, and there will be times you may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. The important thing to remember is to always make a total effort. Even when the odds are against you, look for how you can impact the game and support your team. Because one player can be a crucial ingredient on a team. But one player cannot make a team. For some the YPL will be a thrill of being involved with the elite junior cricket competition in the state, for your teams the goal will be progressing to the finals, and for others their strong performances may result in them being selected for the Youth Super Series and state team trials. But while a trophy carries dust, the memories you make during the Youth Premier League will last you forever. With that in mind, give it your all, enjoy your cricket and play brave, and all the best for the Youth Premier League.

Had ‘the talk’ yet? Betting and sport don’t have to go together. As a parent, there’s a lot of ‘talks’. There’s the big one, of course. And then there’s the gambling one, the one you have because many teens mistakenly think that betting is a normal part of the game. Help your kids understand the risks.

FROM MORTLAKE, TO THE MCG, TO THE WEST INDIES, LEG-SPINNER GEORGIA WAREHAM’S METEORIC RISE SEEMINGLY HAS NO END.
Rivers en route to back-to-back Championships in 2010/11 and 2011/12.
At just 16 years old, Wareham was the youngest player in WBBL|01, playing with the Melbourne Renegades. She was not out of her depth however, having played above her age for most of her career. “Playing in the first Women’s Big Bash was unbelievable,” Wareham said. “Learning from some amazing international players like Dane van Niekerk and Danielle Wyatt taught me so much the game of cricket, things I will never forget.”

“Playing for the Waves was the first chance I had to play with girls my age. I made a lot of new friends and really developed my game with them.” “Winning those championships was great, but it’s about so much more than that. The opportunity to have elite coaches and training, and to play a lot of cricket against the best people my age in the state made me a much better player.”
Wareham solidified her position in the Renegades lineup with a number of solid performances including 3/19 against the Perth Scorchers including the prized scalp of Nicole Bolton. She first tasted international cricket in April 2018 on an Under 19 tour of South Africa where s she claimed 4/17 against the Emerging South Africa outfit in a 50 over match. Her impressive performances earned her a call-up to the national T20 squad in September 2018. “Earning my first Australian cap was a dream come true. It’s what I’ve been working my entire life and to be given it is truly an honour.” Less than a month after her T20 debut, she was picked in the ODI squad that took on Pakistan, taking two wickets on debut. She was selected in Australia’s squad for the 2018 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, playing all six games. She made her mark in the final against England taking 2/11 with the ball and scoring a stunning run out. “Getting the opportunity to play in the World Cup was unreal. It’s been enormous for me and my cricket, and to win it was an amazing feeling.” Wareham has been turning heads since her junior days with the Western Waves. Strong with both bat and ball, she claimed figures of 3/1 against Northern UNDER 14 FEMALE YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE 2019-20 | CRICKET VICTORIA

A TERRIBLE CRICKET INNINGS, BUT A ROAD TOLL WE SHOULD AIM FOR. Last year, 259 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Thousands more suffered serious, often life changing injuries. Together with Cricket Victoria and the broader Victorian community, the TAC is working towards our long term goal to achieve zero road deaths and serious injuries. This vision is called Towards Zero.

COACHINGISFOREVERYONE ‘Playing brave’ is about much more than hitting boundaries and getting wickets. It is about stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking risks. Grace Lee, coach of Western Waves Under 14 girls and the youngest coach in the YPL program epitomises what it means to play brave. Lee has been involved in cricket for the majority of her life, starting at 11 years old in Terang, 212 kilometres south-west of Melbourne. “After a couple years of playing in a local boys’ team, I was fortunate to be selected as a part of the Western Waves Under 14s in 2009,” Lee told Cricket Victoria. “From there, I continued to play in the Waves rep sides until my final year in 2013/14 where we lucky enough to win the State Championship at the MCG.” Her cricketing talents have taken her across the seas as well, having been selected in the Cricket Without Borders team which participated in the 2014 and 2016 ICC East Asia-Pacific World Cup Qualifiers. Lee still plies her trade with Essendon Maribyrnong Park in Women’s Premier League, but sought out coaching as a separate pathway and has done so in the six seasons since she stopped playing. “I wanted to stay involved in the Western Waves pathway and give back to the teams and people that supported me throughout my cricketing journey.” From there, Lee’s coaching pathway has skyrocketed to now being the Female Development Officer and have a position on the board of the Western Waves, as well as a number of head coach position across the greater Western suburbs area. “From where I started to now, I have seen myself grow and improve as a coach, I love that it is something that you never stop developing and learning. The opportunities I have had to be involved in the State Championships and now YPL, I am very grateful for, and have not only shaped me as a coach, but also as a person.” Lee is a champion in the womens cricket field, and has used her voice to increase female participation in cricket in her local area, although she is very humble about it. “When I started playing, there was no such thing [as girls-only cricket] in my area, and I believe it is a real positive and credit to many people, male and female, that have thrown their support behind the competitions. We are seeing a strength in the girls playing and a greater understanding and appreciation of the game at local, regional, national and international levels.” “Through my involvement, I have seen more and more male coaches and players take interest in the women’s game and show their support of the athletes and coaches involved.” Coaching is never an easy role, let alone in a representative capacity and especially at such a young age, and Lee credits a strong network of mentors with getting to where she is today. “I am very fortunate to have had great support over the years from major stakeholders in the region including current CAT Stephen Field. I was also fortunate to have many female coaches and managers throughout my Waves journey that set the tone and helped everyone be more accepting of females in the sport. Loretta Kearney and Shae Johnson were trailblazers in this area for me.” And while Lee herself embodies playing brave like few others can, she is encouraging the girls in her Waves team to take as many chances as possible. “I encourage my players to take any opportunity that comes their way while playing cricket with both hands and give it their all. Whether it is opening that batting or bowling, donning the keeping gloves, or being a leader on the field, it’s all about taking your chances and enjoying the ride.” During my time playing with Cricket Without Borders they have a motto of “Be Bold. Show Sportsmanship. Have Fun. Make Friends” and I believe I incorporate these values into my coaching and think the “Play Brave” and “Be Bold” go hand in hand.” UNDER 14 FEMALE YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE 2018-19 | CRICKET VICTORIA
YOUNG ‘KEEPER NICOLE FALTUM IS A SPARK PLUG BEHIND THE STUMPS, AND HAS PROVED HERSELF FAST TO CLAIM THE NUMBER ONE SPOT IN VICTORIA.
Georgia Wareham and Annabel Sutherland. She has also donned the green and gold as part of the Governor-General’s XI against New Zealand.
Earning a rookie contract with the Melbourne Renegades in WBBL|02 at just 16 years old, Faltum has been on the radar of those in the know for a while.
“It’s such an honour to be selected to any Australian outfit.”
“Learning behind New Zealand ‘keeper Rachel Priest helped me so much,” Faltum said. “I absorbed as much knowledge as I could from all the players and coaches.” “It was my first time in a professional environment, I wanted to learn as much as I could about what it takes to be a professional athlete.”
E L O C I N M U T L FA 17 17
She was then offered a full-contract with cross-town rivals Stars prior to WWBL|03, backing up South African wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee in her first year.
Growing up in Moe, 130km east of Melbourne, Faltum represented Gippsland Pride in the Youth Premier League. Starting at Under-14 level in 2013, she finished her junior career with three 50s in the 2016/17 season. “The YPL system is so important for young girls who love cricket and want to play at a high level. The coaching and development it gives is second-to-none.” “I look back at how much my game developed from when I started with the Pride to where I am today, my coaches and other staff have shaped me to the cricketer I am today.”
“Having a few seasons under my belt learning from some of the best in the world set me up perfectly.” Faltum is no stranger to being in a high performance setup, having represented Victoria at Under-15 and Under-18 levels before breaking through to the senior squad in the 2017/18 season, aged 17. Now the only specialist wicketkeeper contracted to Victoria, Faltum is ready to shine. “Being selected to represent Victoria alongside some of the best players in the country, and the world is such a privilege.” “I’ve learnt so much from so many great players and coaches over the last few years, and now I’m ready to show everyone what I can do.” Fultum was selected to represent Australia at Under-19 level as they toured South Africa alongside YPL graduates Tayla Vlaeminck, UNDER 14 FEMALE YOUTH PREMIER LEAGUE 2019-20 | CRICKET VICTORIA

PACEBOWLERWELFARE
PACE BOWLERS TO BE LIMITED TO
• U13 Four overs maximum each spell* & Eight overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)
• U15 Allow 4-6 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Five overs maximum each spell* & twelve overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)
Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.
• U17 Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)
• U19 Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell
MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture
1. AGE
2. WORKLOAD
• Growing bones
• Understand
are more susceptible to injury • Spinal bones don’t fully mature until the mid 20’s
previous loads
3. TECHNIQUE 35º
• Plan & Monitor for each individual • Avoid large load spikes
Counter-rotation Greater than 35º is a risk
• The existing guidelines are complex and can result in young bowlers not getting the consistent bowling through a week that they require for their physical and technical development
