WELCOME

Welcome to the 2017-18 Cricket Victoria State Championships. Over the next two months, the Cricket Victoria State Championships will be staged across the state at under-14, under-16 and under-18 levels, culminating in six highly anticipated finals. Having been established as a key component of the talent identification system for men and women, the Cricket Victoria State Championships continues to be recognised as the state’s leading talent pathway. I wish to acknowledge and thank the Premier Cricket clubs, affiliates and their representatives from across Victoria, whose tireless work to support the programs in the regions are crucial to the talent recruitment process. Finally, I’d like to congratulate each and every one of this year’s representatives who are contesting the Cricket Victoria State Championships and wish you the best of luck in your pursuit of success.

THE BEGINNING THE JOURNEY THE DESTINATION Congratulations on your selection! Playing in the state championships is a great opportunity for you to challenge yourself against the best young cricketers from around the state. It is important that you enjoy the competition and make a positive contribution to your team on and off the field. “The Beginning – The Journey – The Destination” is a phrase that will be repeated many times throughout your career as you discuss your game with coaches, players and family members. For cricketers young and old, the “destination” tends to overwhelm their thinking and this is linked to the dream of representing your state and country. We are all aspirational players and have dreamt of playing international cricket but it is important to focus on the “journey”. This is to be experienced, day in day out, week in week out, month on month, year on year and it is the enjoyment of the game that will be the driving force. The journey throughout this competition will present you with some strong performances and some that may not have been to the standard you were expecting of yourself. Importantly, you are looking at each match and assessing yourself against the variables that are present and then moving on from that performance and preparing for the next. Each day will present another opportunity and it is up to you and those around you in your team to discuss the game each day and what you have learnt from the journey. For some the destination will be the thrill of being involved in the competition week, for teams it will be progressing to the finals and for others strong performances may result in an invitation to state youth trials. Regardless of the destination, enjoy the journey you are on this week and all the best for the championships.

FOR MELBOURNE RENEGADES PLAYER MATT SHORT, THE PHRASE “PATIENCE AND TIME” DESCRIBES HIS JOURNEY SO FAR WITHIN THE BBL CLUB.

T T A M

T R O SH 5

Making his debut in the Boxing Day clash at the Furnace against Perth Scorchers in 2014, the road ahead looked bright for the emerging allrounder, however, the challenge that is cricket at the elite level would see Short only play a further two games leading into BBL|07.

After each season the playing list is reviewed and regenerated with an eye on success the following season. Matt Short’s ability has always been evident and although the investment may not have resulted in as many games for the Renegades so far as he had hoped, he realises that patience will reward him in the long run.

While Short has only played a handful of senior games for the Renegades, what is not seen by the greater cricket community is the countless hours of work being invested behind the scenes. The clean-striking Short has not wasted the opportunities to look and learn from the game’s leading T20 players. Like many other trade industries, Short has served his apprenticeship and is looking forward to the opportunity to show his club he is now an emerging tradesman. Within the BBL, the single focus of every club is to win the competition. The idea of a player having time to find their feet within games is a foreign concept when the immediate result at the end of each match can determine a player’s fate for the next fixture.

A TERRIBLE CRICKET INNINGS, BUT A ROAD TOLL WE SHOULD AIM FOR. Last year, 291 people lost their lives on Victorian roads. Thousands more suffered serious, often life changing injuries. Together with Cricket Victoria and the broader Victorian community, the TAC is working towards our long term goal to achieve zero road deaths and serious injuries. This vision is called Towards Zero.

FOR TENACIOUS WICKET KEEPER BATTER SEB GOTCH, SEASON 2016/17 WILL BE FOREVER MARKED AS THE YEAR OPPORTUNITY KNOCKED BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY HE ANSWERED IT EVERY TIME. The first opportunity presented itself with the Melbourne Stars in the BBL when he replaced Peter Handscomb who had been called into the Australian team.

B E S H C T O G 15

An impressive 30 on debut against the Brisbane Heat would complement his tidy glovework and show to all that he had the skills and the temperament to compete at this level.

would produce his two most important innings for the season in the Sheffield Shield final helping Victoria secure a record third consecutive victory. As 2017/18 season continues to unfold, a debut in the JLT Cup during October adds another checkpoint in a career taking shape nicely. Importantly, what the past 12 months has highlighted for Seb is that when the opportunity presents itself, you must have the preparation complete and the confidence to grab it with both hands.

Finishing the BBL06 season with three games and an understanding of the level of performance required to be a regular in the team, expect to see the dynamic striker pushing hard for addition games this season. The second opportunity would be a debut with the Bushrangers in the Sheffield Shield clash against WA in Perth, a confronting experience for a first game player with the team beaten outright within two days. Holding his place in the team for the remaining games of the season, Gotch

YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

PACE BOWLER WELFARE

PACE BOWLERS TO BE LIMITED TO

• U13

Four overs maximum each spell* & Eight overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

• U15

Allow 4-6 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Five overs maximum each spell* & twelve overs maximum per match. Target 100-120 balls per week (match & training)

Over the past year our understanding of how workload may contribute to bone stress injury in young fast bowlers has advanced significantly. As a result the existing youth fast bowling guidelines have been refined. Consultation with State/Territory medical and fitness staff, as well as pace bowling coaches, has provided a clear Australian Cricket position. Below is a summary of the rationale to change and the changes themselves.

• U17

Allow 6-8 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Six overs maximum each spell* & 16 overs maximum per match. Target 120-150 balls per week (match & training)

• U19

Allow 8-10 weeks gradual bowling preparation prior to the season. Seven overs maximum each spell* & 20 overs maximum per match. Target 150-180 balls per week (match & training) *rest between spells should be the same number of overs from the same end as the completed spell

MANAGEMENT APPROACH • Lumbar (low back) stress fracture is the most debilitating fast bowler injury and results in the most time missed due to any injury in young fast bowlers • Adolescence provides a “window of opportunity” to improve bone strength with consistent bowling through this period when bone is thought to be responsive to well-planned loading. This has potential to develop a stronger thicker lumbar vertebrae that are better capable of withstanding the loads of fast bowling • Cricket Australia research shows that the frequency of bowling sessions (more sessions per week and less time between sessions) increases the risk of developing a lumbar stress fracture. This appears to be a more prominent risk factor than the number of balls bowled • Sustained bowling over a prolonged period of time (e.g 3 months) without a rest period was is also a risk factor in the development of lumbar stress fracture • The existing guidelines are complex and can result in young bowlers not getting the consistent bowling through a week that they require for their physical and technical development

• Growing bones

• Understand

are more susceptible to injury • Spinal bones don’t fully mature until the mid 20’s

3. TECHNIQUE 35º

for each individual • Avoid large load spikes

Counter-rotation Greater than 35º is a risk
