The History
From developing curved glass for shop facades and mirrored traffic hazard signage to acoustic, bulletproof and energy-efficient curved glass; CRICURSA's catalogue of products represents the history of glass over the last hundred years. Founded in Barcelona in 1928 by Alejandro Sasplugas Moré and Fernando Figuerola Tutusaus, CRICURSA's first project was the glass for the lamps at the famed Montjuïc fountains, created for the 1929 International Expo. Of course there was more to come.
CRICURSA is an independent, privately owned company, determined to develop glass’s potential and build the company’s reputation as a world-leading innovator. Each successive generation has anticipated future architectural demands and invested in research to meet the engineering challenges of its design era. In 1978, CRICURSA acquired an autoclave for laminating curved glass.

Anticipating future architectural challenges - inventions which are the results of years of specialist research. CRICURSA is the ‘Go To’ company of choice for many of the world’s most inventive, experimental architects who recognise its unique understanding and expertise. Important projects established CRICURSA’s reputation and drew international interest in works such as Kursaal which Rafael Moneo designed in San Sebastian o Prada epicenter in Tokyo by Herzog & de Meuron.
CRICURSA’s client list reads like a ‘Whos Who’ of the greatest contemporary architectural innovators including Herzog & De Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Norman Foster, SANAA, Frank O. Gehry, and RCR Arquitectes, Pritzker Price 2017. Most recently very thick laminated glass with titanium inserts has been used as an integral structural component for interconnecting walls, balustrades and stairs of the new American Embassy in London designed by Kieran Timberlake.

Elsewhere, height is no longer an obstacle from boutique projects such as the 9m bespoke curtain-like panels at Dolce & Gabbana’s store in Miami to The Qatar National Library in Doha that features tall, undulating, diamond-shaped facades. In Paris, La Samaritaine will be one of the most impressive double-skin facades in Europe. Internationally CRICURSA has won plaudits for its products, service and business operation.
2018 In 2011 CRICURSA was awarded the National Design Prize for its research, innovation and expertise, helping to make real numerous, audacious architectural concepts. In 2013 the Design Management Europe award which acknowledged the vital role that effective design management plays in successful business strategies to help differentiate its brand, products and services.
CRICURSA has never rested on its laurels. Crisunid® California which protects against the sun while maintaining 73% of the glass's transparency, is a landmark in CRICURSA’s history. It is the latest evidence of CRICURSA’s knowledge and insight into the potential, not just for glass, but its integration in contemporary and future architecture as an exciting interactive component contributing to the quality, polish, expression and maintenance of new buildings.

For their flagship store in New York City on 5th Avenue, Nike is realizing a visually dynamic façade incorporating carved and slumped insulating glass units. Their concept for a lenticular membrane required research and development of a suitable material solution, followed by a rigorous verification process to confirm the custom carved and slumped glass product would meet the project’s aesthetic goals and performance requirements. Glass fabrication of the 2.35 m by 4.09 m insulating glass units begins with milling and then polishing the 115 linear meters of 20mm wide carved lines into the number one surface of the outer lite at high speed in a CNC polishing station. Next, the two layers of the outer lite are gravity slump formed in the bending kiln, and then laminated together in an autoclave. Finally, the outer laminated lite and inner lite are assembled into an insulating glass unit with an Edgetch Triseal spacer, ready for assembly into the curtain wall frame.

The exhibit shows state-of-the-art manufacturing possibilities in digitally printed XXL size curved glass. The panel exhibited comprises 21.52mm curved annealed glass laminated using SentryGlas® interlayer.

CRICURSA I GLASSTEC 2016 - Dusseldorf VIDRE-SLIDE Vidre-Slide, a collaboration between Cricursa and EOC, became the unmissable Glasstec 2016 masterpiece. The technique for forming long, tight-curvature glass was developed by Cricursa for a project in Hong Kong, in collaboration with Eckersley O’Callaghan. Vidre-Slide exemplifies a collaborative approach between engineers and fabricators that tests the practical application of emerging glass technologies.
