BURGLARY SUSPECT FOUND NAKED INSIDE MEDINA HOME JANUARY 16, 2020 -WBBJ 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS STAFF MEDINA, Tenn. ó A Milan man accused of breaking into a Medina home is in custody after investigators found him intoxicated and naked inside a vacant home. Police say Adrian Gray, 35, was found inside the East Church Street home Tuesday, after a neighbor reported seeing someone inside the temporarily vacant home. Police say the neighbor told officers that the homeowner was out of town. Investigators believe Gray had been in the garage of the home for an extended period of time, and may have stayed in the homeowner’s vehicle for up to two days before breaking into the home. Police say Gray is believed to have eaten the homeowner’s food, drank the alcohol that was inside, and ransacked the home in the time he was at the residence. Police found a .38caliber revolver, clothes and a cell phone in the homeownerís vehicle, as well as .38-caliber rounds on the garage floor and back room of the home. Police say Gray was convicted of attempted second-degree murder in Milan in 2009.

January 18, 2020 - Ali Mason - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. Jackson police are investigating a Saturday afternoon shooting in the parking lot of a local business. “As far as a business ownerís concern, you hate that it happened at your establishment, but we donít have a lot of control over it because it’s the world in which we live in right now,” said Gary Christian, owner of Back Yard Bar-Be-Cue. Police filled the parking lot Saturday afternoon after people exchanged gunfire in the area. “From what I understand is, a gentleman came in the side entrance of the restaurant, came to the edge of the counter and walked back out,” Christian said. “When he walked back out to the car, he was riding in, someone from behind the building - I don’t know who - started shooting at him.” He said it happened between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. “The guy, the driver of the car he was in, started shooting at them. These people were behind the restaurant, back behind the VA,” Christian said. One man who lives near the restaurant said he heard at least eight to 10 gun shots, during the shooting. The shooting came as a surprise to customers and employees. “It puts innocent people in a terrible position” Christian said.”You canít go out and have a nice lunch without worrying about this.” Despite this, Christian is grateful for the outcome. No one inside the restaurant was hurt.

JMCSS MOVING FORWARD TOGETHER At the last school board meeting (open to the public), I was literally treated to an open display of what can be accomplished by those that take advantage of options and opportunities at JMCSS. Nathan Barber, principal of JCM Early College High got to introduce the students that will be graduating with diplomas from high school and a degree from JSCC! The best part was the students sharing their plans for the future post-graduation. One student will be graduating from JSCC and get to walk across the stage with their mother to receive a degree! These students most of which also worked outside the home were managing academics from high school in addition to a full load from JSCC. One of the students attended the meeting in their work uniform. One student commented that if you were willing to put in the effort and have the determination to succeed that the support was available to anyone to help them reach their goals. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Consider the Facts When Making Decisions Dr. Jared Myracle gave a report on the extraordinary progress being made from utilizing the curriculum across the school system. He also reported that overall teacher satisfaction is about 20% higher by having clarity and support in teaching their students. It appears that academics are on track if we simply trust the process. There is evidence of city and county support for what is taking place at JMCSS as both city and county councils have acknowledged appreciation for Mr. Ray Washington communicating key points with them as they move forward with funding the new schools to be built. In the past decade JMCSS had four different superintendents. The criterion established for the current search seemed to be to have been fulfilled by the previous superintendent. The current superintendent seems to have the support, background and skill set needed to leverage the growth and building plans for the near future. It takes time to execute a well-designed plan to achieve the right results. The governor’s office has paid attention as have educators across the state. Post-secondary institutions in the area are doing their part to enhance this process with grants and scholarships. Perhaps its time to take a moment to reassess where we are and where we are going. Set aside the deficit mindset and embrace where leadership is going at JMCSS and trust the process! Teachers want continuity, students want opportunity to learn how to learn so they can have options for their future. There is way too much at stake to get in a hurry to change leadership once again simply because this is an election year. If what you are doing is working what is the rush? Education is not a sprint it is a marathon. Don Polley Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com)

Lane College Joins Conversation to Repurpose Former Lincoln Elementary School Building

Lane College Announces

“I feel fortunate to be named the head football coach at Lane College,” Brown said. “I am strongly committed to assisting our students with their academic pursuits while developing their athletic talents. I want them to be the best they can be on and off the field,” Brown said. While at Lane, Brown has served as offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and Dragon Academy liaison. Brown’s offense was one of the top scoring offenses in the SIAC Conference, averaging 24.8 points per game. Under his direction, two players earned All-SIAC recognitions. “We are looking forward to Coach Brown helping to inspire our players as he leads the Dragons to success,” Athletic Director Derrick Burroughs said. “Just as important to us, Brown has a genuine passion for Lane College and the qualities that make the College unique,” Lane College President Logan Hampton said. Brown, a native of Shreveport, LA, earned his Master of Science in Public Administration and Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology from Grambling (LA) State University. He replaces Burroughs, who will devote his full attention to serving as Director of Athletics.

Lane College is pleased to engage in the conversation to repurpose the former Lincoln Elementary School building. This will allow the College to increase its instructional classroom space, recreational facilities, extend the impact of the Ten Blocks Initiative and create a multipurpose community center for the Lane College neighborhood. Immediately, the College will use the recreational space and instructional classroom. The College proposes to develop the multipurpose community center to fully implement the Ten Blocks Initiative. This Initiative is an integral part of the Collegeís strategic plan and aims to positively impact the lives of those who learn and live within the Lane College community. Through the Ten Block Initiative, our STEM students regularly engaged children attending the former Lincoln Elementary School at its Berry Street location. Lane will continue to deliver such programs for neighborhood children in the building. In particular, the College will seek to develop the entire facility to accommodate a diversity of College and neighborhood uses including the following: Homework Center- Science Saturdays -Summer Camp -Skating and Indoor Hockey Rink -Arcade -Adult Education Center -Entrepreneur Development Center -Technology Center -Office Space for Community Organizations When the College is approved as a Tennessee educator preparation provider (EPP), the program will need instructional rooms, faculty offices, and conference rooms. Additionally, the College continues to have a need for indoor recreational space to support intramural, sports teamís practices and activities. Though Lane College has modest resources, we are excited to engage this conversation and will work with various partners, neighbors, students and community leaders to develop plans and usages of the facility. Thus, it will take the public, private, community, church, and college working together to achieve this dream ñ the Miracle Mile. Certainly, this conversation is dependent on decisions by the Lane College Board of Trustees, City of Jackson, Madison County, and Jackson-Madison County School System.
