SPRING GARDENING

West Tennessee

Believe it or not it is now time to start preparing for spring gardens. OUTDOORS There are many vegetables that grow best in spring and they need early with Ray Jones preparations in order to ensure Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com successful results. or 731-694-8614 I asked Alex Watkins who played football for Alabama why they were so much more successful than any other program and he replied with one word “Preparation”. Alex is a Brownsville native who is a highly recruited strength coach now with the Florida Gators. Because of his preparation while in college it has paid off well for him. The same type of preparation is needed for gardens by starting early and reaping good vegetables by late spring. Seedlings can be started indoors and you will have plants ready to plant without having to purchase them and therefore save time and money looking for them. Covid has caused many to start gardens who have not raised them in the past. By getting an early start you will be eating fresh vegetables from your own garden while everyone else is in the grocery stores. The Great Outdoors is waiting for you right there in your own back yard.

Jackson City Mayor Scott Conger and family test positive for COVID-19

Jackson City Mayor Scott Conger (r) announced that he tested positive for COVID-19 Sunday morning, along with his wife Nikki and son Charlie. “Friday morning Nikki and Charlie weren’t feeling well, and tested positive (for) COVID-19,” Conger said. “I stayed home to quarantine and take care of everyone. Because you know when momma goes down, it gets crazy!” Conger added that symptoms have been “relatively mild for both (Nikki and Charlie),” and that he is currently only experiencing symptoms of a “slight head cold.” The couple’s daughter, Madelyn, has not tested positive for COVID-19, according to the statement. Both Conger and his wife are vaccinated. Conger stated that he will continue to remain quarantined for the week. “Be safe and be cautious,” he said. The City of Jackson has conducted meetings virtually in the past, particularly at the onslaught of the pandemic--an option that may be resurrected this upcoming week to allow Thursday’s agenda review meeting to occur regardless of quarantines.

Persephone, Absolution

Poetic Expressions

By Bill Marable Dichotomy underfoot, a near effortless darkness enveloped her. Trapped in the abyss, her thoughts echoed louder than the shepherd’s gathering bell. (Remember: Everything that looks good to you, ain’t good for you. Trouble is easy to get into, but hard to recover from. You gonna hear me one day.) Absolution petitioned. Granted. Lost sheep, return to your flock. 1-22-22

Convictions of an old Coach Persephone, Falling Rita Dove - 1952-

One narcissus among the ordinary beautiful flowers, one unlike all the others! She pulled, stooped to pull harder— when, sprung out of the earth on his glittering terrible carriage, he claimed his due. It is finished. No one heard her. No one! She had strayed from the herd. (Remember: go straight to school. This is important, stop fooling around! Don’t answer to strangers. Stick with your playmates. Keep your eyes down.) This is how easily the pit opens. This is how one foot sinks into the ground. “Persephone, Falling,” from Mother Love by Rita Dove. Copyright 1995 by Rita Dove. Used by permission of W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.

Education Columnist Don Polley with Coach Joe North sharing his new book “Convictions of an Old Coach.” Convictions of an Old Coach is a book about basketball. It’s also much more about heart and soul and the will to achieve. It’s about the game of life. In his collection of anecdotes, Coach Joe North passes the ball and the wisdom from his storied forty-year career to athletes and fellow coaches alike. Yes it’s a book written with words of wisdom for coaches but it is really a book for us about life and being your best and how to bring out the best in others. Congratulations on the publication of your book. It can be purchased at his record shop downtown “Third Eye Curiosity”.

Poetry at your Fingertips Ain’t Never Not Been Black foregrounds Black pleasure Black pain and Black love in unflinchingly Black ways. Engaging with themes of masculinity, racism, love, and joy, Johnson is at once critical and creative. His spoken word performance transfers effortlessly to the page, with poems that will encompass you. This is a book about blackness and survival, and how in America these are inseparable. In a world of individualism, who can you hold close? In a world of danger, what makes you feel safe? From a poem written in the form of a syllabus, to another about the time his grandmother literally saved his life, Johnson’s creative expression is constantly enacting the feminist mantra, “the personal is political.”
