RAYMOND JAMES DONATES BIG TO 100 BLACK MEN OF WEST TN
Ms. Lynne Henning, Vice-President of Raymond James, remarks included a presentation of a large check to 100 President, Dr. Jerry Woods and the 100 Black Men of West TN for $25,000. Raymond James was a platinum and naming sponsor for the 2022 Gala and Ms. Henning served as Honorary Co-Chair along with Dr. Melvin Wright, Sr.
BY CSENEWSThe return of the Holiday Splendor Scholarship Benefit Gala took place Saturday, December 31, 2022 here in the Hub City. The 28th Annual event, sponsored by the 100 Black Men of West Tennessee, Inc. had taken a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Gala patrons experienced the “wow factor” as they entered the Carl Perkins Civic Center Ballroom, which was transformed into a venue of true holiday splendor. Green and snowflacked Christmas trees flooded the area while a draped ceiling provided the dramatic essence of opulence. WOW!
Upon arrival, the guests were able to ‘Mingle and Jingle” while awaiting the official start of the program. There were hugs and handshakes since some of the patrons had not seen each other since the 2019 gala.
The dapper 21st Century Scholars, clad in tuxedos, ably introduced themselves and scholar Jah’Karius Conley delivered moving and captivating remarks on behalf of all the scholars. The scholars are Brennan Forrest, Kelvin Rhyne, Quinton Williams, Jordan Williams, Joshua Durr, Ian Porter, Zach Cunningham, Jotavious Dotson, and Jah’Karious Conley.

SOCIALLY SEEN AROUND WEST TN
By Wendy Isom MercerHappy New Year! What a blessing to start off the new year as a new member of the CSE News Team! Special thanks to CSE News Publisher and Founder Bill Marable for extending this opportunity to me. Here, twice a month, I will write a social column called “Socially Seen Around West TN” that builds on the legacy started by my great journalism mentor and friend, the late Gwenda Anthony.
the record, I have officially lived in Jackson longer than any other city in my entire life. I also have Gwenda to thank for introducing me to tastes unique to this region, including fried fish plates with spaghetti, chess squares, and fruit tea.
I am so thankful that I crossed paths with Gwenda. I especially treasure the opportunity that I had to work with her on some very meaningful news projects at The Jackson Sun including an award-winning series, “October 1960: The Untold Story of Jackson’s Civil Rights History” published by the news team in October 2000.
After a successful newspaper career, I made my transition from the newsroom to the classroom. I earned my master’s degree in special education from the University of Memphis and worked as a special education teacher in West Tennessee for several years. From there, I found my niche in special education advocacy and workforce development. Still, my love for journalism and writing remains intertwined in everything I do.
My goal for this column is to serve as a social mantle to highlight community events and the people positively impacting West Tennessee. And, of course, I want to make Gwenda proud.
Sincerely and Socially Seen, Wendy Isom Mercer
Wendy Isom Mercer, a freelance columnist/writer, works as the Southwest TN One Stop Operator at the American Job Center in Jackson. She previously worked at the STAR Center as a job placement specialist. Wendy, a former special education teacher, earned her master’s degree in teaching from the University of Memphis. She received her bachelor’s degree in print journalism from Clark Atlanta University. She is active in several community organizations. Wendy currently serves as president-elect of the Jackson-Old Hickory Rotary Club.
Several years ago, Gwenda wrote a popular “Out and About” social column that featured news highlights and photos from some of the most notable community events around town for the former West Tennessee Examiner. Gwenda’s death in 2015 left a huge void in Jackson and the journalism community.
I first met Gwenda in June 2000 when I interviewed for an open features reporter position at The Jackson Sun. At that time, she was the features editor. June 2000 was ironically also the same time that Bill Marable launched the West TN Examiner, now the CrimeSEEN Examiner, which remains “Jackson’s and rural West Tennessee’s oldest African-American owned newspaper.”
It was also in June 2000 that I officially accepted a features reporting job at The Jackson Sun and Gwenda was my direct supervisor. I admired her professionalism, wit, journalistic excellence, and her community involvement. What also struck me was the genuine way Gwenda extended hospitality to me beyond the newsroom, inviting me to her home for a meal when I couldn’t make it home for the holidays. Home for me was Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the years, Gwenda and her family became part of my extended family. I ended up marrying a Jacksonian and now I consider West Tennessee my forever home. For

37 YEAR OLD MASSIVE STROKE SURVIVOR CONTINUES TO SHARE STORY OF TRIUMPH OVER TRAGEDY
What do you do when you think you’re on top of your game and without warning, life as you know it comes to a screeching halt? How do you cope when life-changing events leave you feeling hopeless? These and other questions are addressed by Mia and Myrtle Russell as they share their gratitude story of triumph over tragedy.
Prior to the stroke, Mia Russell was a vibrant nurse, part-time student, and known around town for her unique crochet designs, a hobby she enjoyed as much as she liked taking care of sick babies. However, that all changed on January 9, 2017 when she was blindsided by a massive stroke that landed her in the hospital for 52 days, leaving her permanently disabled. After her discharge from the hospital, her mom, Myrtle, became a caregiver and motivator, working diligently to help her daughter heal. Prior to the stroke, as a birthday gift to herself, Myrtle had finalized plans to attend a writing retreat to work on a book on “gratitude,” a topic she has spent a year researching. Little did she know at the time that everything she had researched on “gratitude” was about to be tested.
Stroke and Rehab Timeline
January 9, 2017 –Mia’s massive Stroke, resulting in right side paralysis, partial blindness, speech and language deficits.
January 13, 2017 – Mia’s emergency Craniotomy to save her life.
March, 2017 – Mia was released from the hospital, began ongoing outpatient rehab. June, 2019, Mia and Myrtle co-published The Stroke That Touched My Heart, a book that chronicles a year-long journey of healing and how it all began with learning to be grateful in all things, even a stroke. The book’s premise is that when you work on gratitude, gratitude works on you: it changes you on the inside and when you change on the inside, life changes. Mia is living proof.
August, 2019, after failing a four-hour driving evaluation, Mia was encouraged by the counselor to begin crocheting with her non-dominant left hand and knee. She is once again enjoying her craft.
October, 2019, Mia and Myrtle co-published The Stroke That Touched My Heart Gratitude Journal.
June, 2020, through physical therapy, Mia learned of the MyoPro, a powered arm and hand brace designed to help restore function to the wearer’s paralyzed or weakened upper extremities, helping individuals perform actions and daily activities that might otherwise be impossible. The MyoPro may also facilitate rehabilitation including muscle re-education and increasing range of motion. The device works by reading the faint nerve signals from the
surface of the skin then activating small motors to move the limb as the user intends. The brain tells the arm/hand to move, the MyoPro picks up the signal and rewards the user with movement.
July, 2020 Mia was evaluated and approved as a candidate for the MyoPro
August, 2020, Mia’s doctor’s order for the MyoPro was submitted to her insurance provider.
October, 2020, approval for the MyoPro denied by the insurance provider. Mia filed three appeals and all three appeals were denied.
January, 2022, Mia launched a fundraising campaign to purchase the MyoPro.
September, 2022, Mia received the MyoPro.
October, 2022, Mia began MyoPro training with her physical therapist.
Mia continues to make remarkable progress, thanks to ongoing physical/ speech/occupational therapy, support from family and friends, and learning to live grateful one day and one small change at a time. She and Myrtle are reaching out to organizations to share their gratitude story of triumph over tragedy and offer help and hope to others who have experienced life-changing events such as Mia’s. See some of Mia’s crochet designs at www. MandMCrochetForU.etsy.com r follow her on Facebook at Mia B Russell and Instagram at mandmcrochetforu. About Mia

A NEW BEGINNING
Each second, each minute, each hour, each day, each week, each month and each year is a new beginning. Everyday is a miniature lifetime with a chance to start all over again.
However, the new year is the ultimate new beginning with a thrill like none other. It’s a “We Made It” attitude and a time where we reflect on the past and make plans for the up-coming year.
New resolutions are made by most people and usually kept by none, but there is still that exciting feeling of making them. Getting a chance to do things over again is something we all can reflect upon and a new year is that opportunity.
“This year I’m gonna do this and this year I’m gonna do that, I used to be this, but this year I”m gonna be that.”
Most resolutions involve health and wealth of which both are important.
The outdoors of West Tennessee offers opportunities for both and now is the time for that new beginning. The West Tennessee outdoors offer great things for one to do to improve health and wealth.
We now have that time to explore the new chapters in our lives and enjoy the nature that only the outdoors can provide. Let us take time to reflect on 2022 and move forward with the best we have to offer the world in 2023.

Burning the Old Year
BY NAOMI SHIHAB NYELetters swallow themselves in seconds. Notes friends tied to the doorknob, transparent scarlet paper, sizzle like moth wings, marry the air.
So much of any year is flammable, lists of vegetables, partial poems. Orange swirling flame of days, so little is a stone.
Where there was something and suddenly isn’t, an absence shouts, celebrates, leaves a space.
