Each month the Town & Country Garden Club awards a yard of the month for exceptional landscape and appearance. It takes extra effort to keep lawns appealing because of the many areas that come into play. The grass is critical because everything else revolves around it. How the flowers and shrubs blend in with the big picture is critical for the look of a lawn. Some people prefer more annuals that bloom all year and have to be replaced each year while others prefer perennials that go dormant in winter and return each year. They require less work because they don’t need to be replaced yearly.Ê Blooming trees such as crepe myrtles are popular in West Tennessee because they are beautiful and only requires maintaining each year. Ray and Miranda Jones were awarded the Green Thumb Award for September from the Town & Country Garden Club. Gardening is a hobby and people canÊ spend countless enjoyable hours in the yard daily enhancing Gods’ green earth. You too will enjoy spending some time in the yard with your kidsÊ getting exercise while adding beauty to your yard in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. JACKSON POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN RECENT HOMICIDE Officers of the Jackson Police Department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested Keenan Murphy at approximately 10:50 am on Friday, October 4th 2019, in the area of North Highland Avenue and Old Humboldt Road.Ê At the time, Murphy matched the description of the shooter from the area of Fairway Boulevard and Winding Creek.Ê Evidence at the scene, indicated that a .40 caliber semi-automatic weapon was used in the crime.Ê Keenan Murphy was in possession of a .40 caliber handgun at the time of his arrest.Ê After a ballistic examination of the firearm, it was determined that the firearm possessed by Keenan Murphy matched shell casings recovered from Fairway Blvd.Ê The firearm also matched shell casings recovered from a crime scene near the intersection of Middleton Street and Neff Street in which two individuals were shot on September 25th 2019.Ê Keenan Murphy confessed to his involvement in both shooting incidents.Ê Murphy has been charged with counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and Employing a Firearm During a Dangerous Felony for shooting Joe Ramirez and Julio Almaraz on September 25th 2019.Ê Murphy has also been charged with the First Degree Murder of Thomas Curry and Attempted First Degree Murder of Vincent Reed Jr. as well as Employing a Firearm During a Dangerous Felony involving the incident on Fairway Boulevard. This quick resolution to this case would not have been possible without the willingness of witnesses to tell police what they had observed and cooperate with the investigation at the earliest opportunity.Ê Keenan Murphy is a dangerous individual that has victimized too many people.Ê Now he will face the consequences of his actions.

CSE News Murphy may be viewed as “dangerous,” however, his mother says he is a victim of a Moore, Valerie Puckett, Joshua Knight Kimberly Phillips, Robert Small, Kevin failed system. W/M/39 B/F/46 W/M/26 W/F/40 B/M/27 “I tried and tried to get my son some help,” Aggr. Assault Domestic Assault Poss. of Sch II Domestic Assault Domestic Assault Victoria Murphy said last Sunday morning. The mother of the troubled young man phoned Community Feedback a local Sunday morning radio talk show hosted by Richard Donnell to let her feelings be known. The show airs every Sunday morning on WFKX-FM 95.7. “I’m not calling here to defend my son,” said Victoria. “If he did what he’s accused of doing it was wrong. But I want people to know that I tried to get my son some help years ago.” Murphy said she began to notice that her son had anger management issues in his teen years and sought help from several different organizations. “I talked to people at Juvenile Court, Pathways and other places trying to get my son some help,” said Murphy. “I could see the signs and I knew that if I didn’t get him some help, he’d be headed for serious trouble.” But, to her dismay, the help she so desperately needed for her son was kept at bay. “I was told he was not old enough for this program, or he was not bad enough for that program,” said Murphy. She said one organization even told her -after her son reached a certain age- it was his decision whether or not he wanted to take part in the treatment. “Again, I don’t want people to think that I’m trying to make excuses for my son’s actions,” that’s not what I called the station for,” said Murphy. “I just think people should know that Keenan was not raised that way. He was brought up in a loving family and Christian environment. He just needed help and the system failed him.”

Sakea A. Martin
Humboldt native, Timmy Martin and daughter Sakea A. Martin recently particulated in the development of a documentary on Racism in America adapted into an off Broadway play called White Washed the racism project. Produced and directed by Michael Kennedy - Creative Action Unlimited. The play depicts a stark look at racism in America and exposes how the only thing that has changed in the last 253 years are the faces. Sakea, raised in Southern California, is an aspiring poet and budding actress. “When I was asked by the producer/director Timmy Michael Kennedy if I would be in a play, I told Martin her that I would do so if the subject matter was something that spoke to my heart,” said Sakea in a recent podcast interview. “ My dad and I participated in the research and development of the project.” The show opened on September 27th at the Troy Art Center in Troy, NY.Ê The second show was on October 4th at Sage College Opalka Gallery in Albany, NY. “I never imagined we’d have a sell out crowd and have to turn people away.” said Timmy Martin. During the Q & A session after the play, some audience members suggested the material was worthy of being presented in schools as an educational tool for students as well perhaps giving serious consideration to pitch this piece to networks as a made for film documentary on racism in America. The next show will be on October 25th, 2019 at the YWCA if Greater New York in Troy , NY at 7:30pm.

Bridge named after longtime local educator, Mack T. Barnett October 7, 2019ÊÊClint Eiland - wbbjtv7.com MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. – Former students and colleagues gathered in Madison County for the unveiling of the Mack T. Barnett memorial bridge. “It’s a great honor for him. I wish he was here to see it, but we are here to see it in our lifetime,” said Sophira Bradford, a 1962 graduate of West Senior High School. Barnett was a Madison County native who attended Lane College and served in the U.S. Army before coming back to West Tennessee. The former students at the bridge Monday morning were graduates of West Senior High School, where Barnett was the principal from 1962 to 1969. “As West High [students] say, he would whip you when you needed it and he would love you when you needed it,” Bradford said. He also had a former colleague and friend at the ceremony. “Our friendship goes back a long way. He was a friend, he was a teacher, and finally he got to be my principal. He was my boss,” said Roscoe Burton, a former teacher at West Senior High School. Barnett’s career in Madison County spanned more than 40 years, and it included multiple positions in schools, a vice presidency of the local NAACP branch, and even a Sunday School teacher position. “He taught me a lot on how to be a teacher. How to not be friends with the students, but be firm with the students,” Bradford said.

NAACP AGREES WITH TENNESSEE ATTORNEY GENERALS OPINION ON RECALL ELECTION The Jackson Madison County NAACP agrees with the State of Tennessee Attorney General’s opinion that the recall petition regarding Jackson-Madison County School Board Members Doris Black and Kelvin Alexander has serious constitutional issues. The law that was passed by the Tennessee legislature and signed by Governor Lee, at the request of Madison County State Senator Ed Jackson and State Representative Chris Todd, in our opinion was ill advise. This form of reckless legislation only hurts the due process of our elections, and the integrity of our system of justice.

Your partner threatens or tries to control you This can be anything from making you feel inadequate to telling you what to wear or how to look. You partner controls your money Keeping cash or credit cards away from you, or discouraging you from working is unacceptable. Your partner isolates you Cutting you off from family and friends makes you even more dependent on your partner and could be a sign of abuse. Your partner physically abuses you This is a serious crime regardless of your relationship status

IS THIS ABUSE? My boyfriend is always texting me wanting to know where I’m at and what I’m doing. I used to think it was because he loved me so much, but now I’m not so sure, especially since I always feel like I’m walking on egg shells when we’re together. I never know what might set him off or cause him to say something about me to embarrass me when we’re with other people. He’s never hit me, though. He’s never even acted like he wanted to hit me, but sometimes he talks to me like I’m stupid or calls me names. It’s like he likes doing stuff to hurt me. Is this abuse? I really love my boyfriend, and I know that he’s going through some hard stuff with his family. I just don’t know what to do. He can be a real jerk sometimes, and I don’t know if I can take it anymore.
ANSWER: It sounds like you’re feeling uncomfortable with several things that your boyfriend is doing, and it sounds like he’s been doing some of these things for quite a while. You asked if behaviors such as demeaning you, embarrassing you, “going off” on you, calling you names or talking to you like you’re “stupid” are abusive behaviors. Any one of these behaviors by itself would be considered disrespectful in any situation. In an intimate partner relationship like yours, they are particularly unhealthy. If they are repeated to the point that you feel like you’re “walking on egg shells,” then they are also emotionally abusive. You have a hard decision to make. When making it, remember that your thoughts, feelings, and experiences are just as important as those of your boyfriend. We all go through “hard stuff,” but that never gives us the right to hurt others nor does it excuse us when we do. Healthy relationships are built on a foundation of respect and trust. Think about that, and think about how you are feeling and about what your future might look like in a year or two if things continue as they are—or get worse. Then ask yourself, “Is this what I really want?” If you’d like to learn more about healthy relationships, check out: www.loveisrespect.org https://www.thehotline.org/is-this-abuse/healthy-relationships/ https://kidshealth.org/en/teens/healthy-relationship.html If you don’t want your name listed...
