JACKSON, Tenn. — Monday night, one woman scared her family and loved ones with what they thought was a real call for help.

The journey of a lifetime begins with one step.
The first couple my husband and I met almost 30 years ago when we visited Jack son for a job opportunity. We had been given a tour of the city by the company and a local realtor, but we decided to do our own tour and visit what some would say the other side of town.
We stopped by this historical CME church on a Saturday to look at the beautiful architectural structure and the rest is history. It was truly by faith and we became instant friends. I am proud to say she is my sorority and Link sister. We had a ball and a lot of laughs at our Links Founders’ Day program. When you look at the pictures, you will see eyes opened, closed eyes, and big smiles.

This is the time of year when many accidents occur because of the activity of deer around West Tennessee.
For deer hunters it is the best of times but, for motorist it is the worst of times. Unfortunately, November is the time when deer activity is at the greatest movement which means across highways, roads and streets as well.
Deer not only roam the county roads as in years past with population growth they city streets are deer crossing too.
Mating season causes bucks to chase does and let their guards down and becomes prime time for hunters. This increases the likelihood that you will encounter deer in your path.
When you see deer on the side of the road it is best to slow down and keep a close eye on them because they follow other deer that may already have crossed the highway.
Motorist must be aware of their unpredictable behavior during the mating season. Just before daylight and just before dark are the greatest movement times which calls for the most caution while driving.
Enjoy the beautiful fall leaves while driving around West Tennessee but be cautious and watch out for the deer in headlights.

Madison County had a great voter turn out out accord ing to Lori Lott, administrator of elections”.
24,297 voters cast ballots in Madison County said Lott” Incumbent Congressman David Kustoff of Tennessee’s 8th congressional district was re-elected receiving 15,075 in Madison County compared to democratic opponent Lynnette Williams receiving 8,233 votes.
In the State Representative race for House District 73, Incumbent Chris Todd received 13,479 votes beating Democrat opponent Erica Coleman’s 5,496 votes.
State Senator Ed Jackson received 15,671 votes com pared to Ronnie Henley’s 6,115 votes in Madison County for State Senate District 27.
The City of Medon Mayor Brad Replogle ran unop posed and was re-elected with 59 votes.
Three Medon aldermen were elected unopposed, Tammy Anthony, 57 votes, Brennan Replogle 50 votes and Cathy Venable with 54 votes.
The City of Three Way also re-elected incumbent Mayor Larry Sanders who ran unop posed with 636 votes.
Aldermen Mary Ann Tremblay also ran unopposed and win with 628 votes.

Last Sunday, the show’s host, Richard Donnell, Sr., was joined by Jackson City Councilman (District 2) Johnny Dodd.
A longtime community activist and organizer, Coun cilman Dodd was on to promote “Better Community Summit” sponsored by the organization -I Care.
In addition to providing a community resource fair, the event is expected to focus on gangs, with a ‘Gang Talk’ breakout session.
The summit -free to the public - will be held on Satur day, November 19th, at Destiny Church located at 363 Wallace Road in Jackson. Registration begins at 9 am.
Dodd says this is a “Family Friendly” event, meaning that there will be activities for everyone who wishes to attend...from the ages of 5 to 95.
There will be sessions and discussions held throughout the day, and yes, lunch will be provided!
Some topics to be discussed, in addition to Gang Pre vention, will be Successful School Strategies and Mental Health Issues. Dodd said that they will also be honoring local First Responders.

show glimmers of brightness in the late 1980’s and early 90’s when he joined forces with Jackson City officials, Community activist Shirlene Mercer, the Jackson Police Department, and a host of other community leaders and just plan folk in an effort to stem the rising tide of gun vi olence and murder that plagued the Hub City at the time. Dodd was instrumental in organizing a series of weekly “Anti-Crime Marches” that focused its attention on areas
In a few days most of America will celebrate Thanksgiving. For those blessed, it will be a day Family, Feast, Football and a couple of Parades on television. Friday is often a day of Christmas shopping for the latest toy or gadget. Plans for Christmas, Hanukkah, and other celebrations related to Religious Faith. Families around West Tennessee will hold to family traditions for each holiday.
I have written about the “Happy Holiday” activities and that is all well for those that celebrate each holiday. In every small or large town in West Tennessee, there will be many that will not be with family or have a special meal. Some of our friends from work or church may be treating a serious illness or be under hospice care. There are some in our communities living in “Homeless Camps”. My intention for bringing up bad news at a time of celebrations should be a real concern for everyone. Our house, car and job does not make us better than anyone else. I write this to encourage each reader to do something good for someone less blessed than yourself. I have supported Jackson area non-profits for years, with my checkbook and my labor. I get great satisfaction doing something that benefited others. I have belonged to Civic Groups that do charity projects since age 20. We can all do a little something and you will be blessed for unconditional giving. If you never helped a stranger, try it someday. There are needs everyday in West Tennessee.
I worked in the mental health field for 38 years, so I want to mention the stress and
of the city where crime was running amuck.

Toward the end of Dodd’s time on the airwaves on Sunday, a lady phoned in with an interesting commentary referring to the Councilman and the impact he has on youth in the East Jackson Community.
The caller explained how there are a few kids - young, black males between the ages of 9-11- who she refers to as her “nephews”. They come around and assist with yard work and various and sundry chores.
“One day I asked them, ‘who’s your best friend?’ And to the caller’s astonishment, one of the kids answered “Mr. Councilman Johnny Dodd is my best friend!”
According to the caller, this sparked a brief debate amongst the youth in which several declared Councilman Dodd as their ‘Best Friend.”
“I thought that was so cute,” said the caller. “I said, how about he just be everybody’s best friend?”
Without hesitation, they all responded, “That’s it! Mr. Councilman Johnny Dodd is everybody’s best friend!”

I hope all have the season they wish for, but if you are struggling, some towns have agencies to reach out for assorted assistance. Jackson has Area Relief, Regional Inter-Faith Agency, and Salvation Army. Dyersburg has a Union Mission and Alamo has churches assisting with Christ mas. I know there are many other groups helping about West Tennessee, but I do not have a list. I wish all a Happy Thanksgiving and I guess I am obligated to say, “Go Vols”.

“She had contacted her family initially through text messag es, saying that she had been kidnapped and needed help. Gave a vehicle description and the police were called,” said Capt. Christopher Chestnut, with the Jackson Police Department.
Kinnon told her sister that she was kidnapped and was being held in the trunk of a vehicle, causing officers to look for what they didn’t know at the time was a non-existent suspect.
“There was a staged phone call. She had someone pretend to be her abductor yelling at her through the phone. Of course this initiated a police response where we were out trying to locate her and the vehi cle,” Chestnut said.
At approximately 4:01 p.m., officers responded to Kinnon’s last known location at her home on Manchester Bay.
But upon arrival, officers were shocked to see that the person who answered the door was actually Kinnon herself.
“Officers made contact with her at her home and she informed them that it was a TikTok challenge and she was trying to prank her family,” Chest nut said.
But no one was smiling after this so-called prank, as Kinnon was arrested for filling a false report.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man accused of planning the murder of Young Dolph is set to make his first court appearance this Thursday, the one-year anniversary of the beloved rapper’s killing.
He was shot and killed Nov. 17, 2021, inside Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies on Airways Boulevard.
Two suspects, Justin Johnson and Cornelius Smith, have been charged in the murder.
Another man, Hernandez Govan, 43, (r) has now been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in connection to Young Dolph’s death.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy told FOX13 that Govan asked for the murder to take place.
The gunmen who shot Young Dolph to death pulled up outside Makeda’s in a white Mercedes and opened fire through the window of the store before jumping back in the car and taking off, police said.
A week after the rapper’s death, Memphis Police said they found that white Mercedes in the 1100 block of Bradley Avenue.
According to court documents, Govan’s last known address is also in the 1100 block of Bradley Avenue.
Another man, Shundale Barnett, has been charged with accessory after the fact, accused of helping Justin Johnson after Young Dolph’s killing. Barnett was arrested in Indiana and released.
A warrant for first-degree murder has since been issued for Barnett, though he has not been arrested at this time.
It is unclear if that murder charge is connected to the Young Dolph case.
Multiple sources told FOX13 that more arrests could still be on the horizon in connection to Young Dolph’s murder.

Sonia Sanchez (born Wilsonia Benita Driver; September 9, 1934) is an Afri can-American poet most often associated with the Black Arts Movement. She has authored over a dozen books of poetry, as well as short stories, critical essays, plays, and children’s books.
She was a recipient of 1993 Pew Fellowships in the Arts. In 2001, Sanchez was the recipient of the Robert Frost Medal for her poetry (one of the highest honors awarded to a nationally recog nized poet) and has been influential to other African-American female poets, including Krista Franklin.

Sanchez was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 9, 1934. Her mother died when Sanchez was only two years old, so she spent several years being shuttled back and forth among rela tives. COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a historic season of firsts, the Benedict College Tigers reached another milestone with their first-ever SIAC football championship by overwhelming Tuskegee 58-21 on Saturday in Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
An emotional head coach Chennis Berry, as he always does after the team wins, gave praise to God. “We’ve come so far in a short period of time,” Berry said. “I’m just humbled and grateful that we’re here. Now we’re able to say we’ve got the first football championship in the history of Benedict College.”
The Tigers, now 11-0 on the season, had a season-high 573 yards of total offense and held Tuskegee to an opponent season-low 41 yards rushing. The Golden Tigers finished with 242 yards of total offense and scored their only two touchdowns on a pair of deep passes – for 75 and 66 yards. The Golden Tigers had 133 yards on those two pass plays, but managed just 109 total yards of offense on 48 combined other plays, and most of those came in the fourth quarter after Benedict had built an insurmountable lead.
“We have a very explosive offense,” Berry said. “I think we’re very good up front with the offensive line. Our quarterback is a dual threat and he’s explosive and can make things happen. I really believe wholeheartedly that we have two of the best running backs in the country with Noah Zaire Scotland and Deondra Duehart. And we have some receivers who can stretch the field vertically. When you put all those pieces together, we feel we have a pretty good explosive offense.”
That offense was dynamite on Saturday against Tuskegee. Benedict scored on their first four offensive series, plus added a special teams touchdown when Reginald Harden scooped up a fumbled punt snap and raced 25 yards for a touchdown. Benedict had a 42-14 lead at the half.
Eric Phoenix completed 19-of-29 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. He completed touchdown passes of 36 yards to Joshua Gaddy and 14 yards to Tayven Grice.
“It feels good to bring a program from the bottom to the top,” said Phoenix, who was a part-time starter as a fresh man in 2019, when the Tigers went 1-9. “This is a blessing.”
Phoenix was also Benedict’s leading rusher with 91 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. The Tigers finished with 236 yards rushing, with Duehart scoring on a 12-yard run and Scotland scoring on runs of 22 and 1 yard. Da’Von Smith added a 3-yard rushing touchdown.
While the offense was lighting up the scoreboard, the Benedict defense recorded seven sacks – three by Loobert Denelus, the SIAC Defensive Player of the Year. Tuskegee was just 1-of-12 on third down conversions, and 1-of-4 on fourth-down conversions. The Golden Tigers, who wrap up their season at 8-3, had their eight-game winning streak snapped.
The Tigers will await Sunday’s NCAA playoff selection show to determine their official seeding. Benedict was No. 1 in the region last week, and certainly did nothing on Saturday to change that position. The No. 1 team in the region will have a bye in the first round, with the second round set for Saturday, Nov. 28.
“We have something special here,” Berry said. “I think we have all the things we need to be successful.”

Pee Wee finish undefeated 9-0 only allowing 4 points a game. Allegra Design Print Mail finished 7-2 winning 4 consecutive games.

The journey of a lifetime begins with one step.
Thirty years ago, Larry Mercer, then a fledgling minister, and his wife Brenda stepped into the role of Pastor and First Lady of Cerro Gordo Baptist Church. “It is a journey that has been full of blessings,” said Rev Mercer when asked to reflect a little on the years that have passed.
“When my wife and I began this journey we had no idea that we would still be here 30 years later,” said Rev Mercer whose steps he says were preordained by the Lord.
Last Friday the First Couple was treated to a elegant banquet, celebrating their journey as leaders of the flock at the small but dynamic church located on the outskirts of Jackson near Denmark, TN.
The event was held on the historic campus of Lane College inside the Kirkendoll Center, with more than 300 in attendance.
The keynote speaker was the pastor’s brother, Rev. Dr. Marvin Mercer - himself celebrating 30 years in the ministry this year as well. (pictured left)
“This has truly been a year of celebration,” said Rev. Mercer with a smile. “We celebrated the 152nd anniversary of Cerro Gordo in August, and my wife and I celebrated 50 years of marriage on October 29th. “
On November 22nd Rev Mercer will celebrate his 73rd birthday.
“No. I never imagined that Brenda and I would be at Cerro Gordo for 30 years,” said Rev Mercer. Then he chuckled and added; I didn’t think we’d still be married after 50 years either. “
