‘I don’t regret it:’ CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Police said the security guard at Soulsville Charter School on Monday got a complaint about car that was double-parked and blocking other parents from dropping of their children. Tucker and the security guard were both taken to the hospital with leg injuries. Kristy Shipp was later arrested at her home and charged with aggravated assault. Shipp claimed the security guard punched her, and she was just fighting back. “I just tapped her with my car to teach her a little lesson,” Shipp said. Shipp admitted her 7-year-old daughter and 9-year-old niece were both in her car, but she didn’t feel bad about what she did. “I don’t regret it,” she said. “I’m still going to court this morning. Truth be told, I don’t, because I’m pretty sure she doesn’t feel bad either.” Tucker said she’s concerned about the younger 300 N. College St. generation learning violence from incidents like this. Trenton, Tn 38382 “l’m looking at the state of Tennessee and just in Memphis, the kids in this generation don’t care about anything,” Tucker said. “The first thing they relate to is violence.” Tucker says by the time the children realize the consequences of their actions, it’s usually too late. Shipp was arrested in September for driving with a revoked or suspended license.

Memphis dance teacher pleads guilty to rape, exposing teen boy to HIV John Conner III MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A local dance teacher pleaded guilty to sex charges after authorities say he raped a student and exposed him to HIV. According to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, John Conner III met the then 16-year-old boy on social media in 2015 and met up on several occasions to have unprotected sex. They even exchanged text messages about their sexual activities along with nude photos. Soon after that, the teen joined the suspect’s dance team, the Infamous Dancerettes. During that time, Conner failed to disclose his HIV status to the minor, authorities said. It wasn’t until several months after their first sexual encounter that the teen learned from another source that Conner was HIV positive. It was then that he finally revealed the abuse to his parents, stating he needed to go to the doctor for testing. The tests came back positive, authorities said. Conner was arrested and charged with criminal exposure to HIV, statutory rape by an authority figure and solicitation of a minor. His trial was set to begin this week, but he decided to plead guilty instead.

Moving forward together at JMCSS

18 Moss Branch Cove

By Don Polley If I were a parent of a student enrolled in JMCSS right now, I would share with my child what an exciting time it is to be involved in the changes that are currently taking place. It is important to remember the significant challenges you had to overcome to achieve the success you have dreamed about! JMCSS is currently running parent workshops to help engage them in their student’s academic lives. The district workshops are designed with the parents in mind. Also, I would like to remind you that TN Dept. of Education was held at Liberty Technology High School on Oct. 30 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. as a part of a six stop School Turnaround Listening Tour. There are a lot of positive things taking place in Jackson and others across the state are beginning to take notice and want to learn more about the progress being made. “Change takes courage. Change takes learning and vulnerability. Change means you have to fight off the fiery darts that sometimes come your way when you are rising above mediocrity. But man are the kids and teachers worth it.” ~Robin McClellan During an earlier visit to JCM-ECH and L.O.O.P (Local Options and Opportunities Program) Governor Lee called those programs models that should be replicated across the state. Be watching for significant changes in the LAUNCH PROGRAM to make a splash very soon as our local Chamber of Commerce will be leading a pilot program which will be offered to selected schools in six pilot communities starting in January 2020. I will be offering more details on this in future articles but for the purpose of this writing let us just say TN-CAPS is a career awareness and preparation system. We should be very grateful to be one of six pilot communities across the state. This may have contributed to our selection as one of the communities. LAUNCH (Career Readiness Initiative) JMCSS • By focusing students around four career pathways that are in high demand in our region, the district can pursue partnerships with local colleges and industry that align with those career pathways, resulting in more options and opportunities for JMCSS students. Career PathwaysÊ • Business Management and AdministrationÊ Health and Human ServicesÊ ÊSTEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, and Manufacturing)ÊÊ Agriculture and Natural Resources Parents get involved with your principals, teachers, and educators as they have taken ownership of the future success of their students. Together we can and will make a difference as we move Jackson forward into the “roaring twenties!”

Madison County Commissioner Jay Bush The Madison County Commission held its November meeting today (Nov. 18th). We learned that the county has been sued in federal court by an employee of the Sheriff’s Department under the Fair Labor Standards Act for failure to correctly pay overtime at the jail. Over 100 employees working at the jail have opted to join this lawsuit and over 100 more may opt in. The case was mediated last week and a proposed $1.3 million settlement agreement was presented to the Commission for approval today.Ê The news of this lawsuit took us all by surprise. The Sheriff’s Department is a constitutional office and while it is funded by the County, it is run independently from the county government. The Sheriff’s Department even has its own Human Resources department separate from the county. The article posted below goes into more details about the facts of the case. At the end of the day, the county owed these Sheriff’s Department employees overtime pay for work they performed and had we not voted to adopt the settlement agreement today, county taxpayers would have faced significant exposure above and beyond $1.3 million.Ê Obviously this is a tough pill to swallow. This is $1.3 million of YOUR money that ought to be used to benefit our community, not pay lawyer’s fees. Because these issues occurred on the Sheriff’s watch, we voted for $1 million of the settlement to come out of the MCSO budget. That vote was largely symbolic because regardless of whose budget this money comes from, it is Madison County taxpayers who are responsible for paying for what was a very costly mistake by the Sheriff’s Department.

COMMUNITY FEELS “SNUBBED” BY MAYOR CONGER, COUNCILMAN DODD By CSENews A East Chester Neighborhood meeting was held Tuesday night at Greater Bethel AME Church located at 148 Cartmell Street in Jackson. The group met to discuss a host of concerns within the area. Mayor Scott Conger was invited and expected to attend, but cancelled due to a family illness. One of the event organizers was Andrea Givens-Moore and she says it feels like her district (Dristict 2) is being ignored by city officials. “We have things going on in this district that concern us and we are having a hard time finding a place to voice our concerns,” said Givens-Moore. “There is vacant property concerns and community upkeep as well as the location of a Hemp production facility in the area,” added Givens-Moore. “We have questions about speed bumps and foul odors invading our neighborhoods also.” According to some present at the meeting, they feel snubbed by Councilman Johnny Dodd and Mayor Conger. “We just want to have our concerns heard and addressed by city officials,” said Givens-Moore. Given’s Moore says the group is very displeased with Councilman Dodd. “We re-elected him (Dodd) again and it feels like he’s turned his back on his district.” The group meets once a month at Greater Bethel.

The City of Jackson and Tennessee Department of Transportation continue to be busy daily with street sidewalk and highway construction in any direction you look ! Since Mayor Scott Conger took office in July there’s been an uptick in Street improvements throughout the city.Ê Along with the continued three year highway and interstate 40 improvements in the area . Sidewalks are being repaired throughout the City of Jackson along with street repairs.Ê We encourage the motorist to be mindful of construction zones and workers.Ê As there continues to also be an upswing in reported accidents in construction zones.Ê It’s sometimes delays and inconveniences but the goal is to improve our infrastructure and make Jackson and west Tennessee a safer more beautiful place to live.Ê Traffic alert Railroad street starting at Lane Avenue is being resurfaced today and down to one lane traffic down to Hardee Street. Use caution and slow in area workers present.

Daily traffic updates can be monitored on the Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters network Facebook page and welcome your involvement and reporting.
