SENTENCED
OVER DUI CHARGE
November 15, 2022 Jessica Davis
JACKSON, Tenn. — On August 17, a Madison County General Sessions court judge was arrested.
Back in August, Judge Hugh Harvey Jr. was arrested on two charges. One being a DUI and second being in possession of a handgun while under the influence.
Around 1:30 p.m., Harvey was seen at the Madison County General Sessions Court, but instead of being behind the gavel, he was behind the defen dant podium.
Harvey entered a guilty plea in court.
“You’re entering a guilty plea to DUI first offence sentenced to 11 months and 29 days with a mini mum fine of $350 for all jail sentences suspended to 48 hours day per day,” the judge said.
This sentence means Harvey won’t have to serve time in jail, but will be on probation for nearly a year. - wbbjtv.com

The Vote to Deny the Deniers
Published 1 week ago on November 15, 2022
By OAKLAND POST
By Emil Guillermo
Congressional elections remind us why we live where we live. At least in the Bay Area.
California, a safe Blue zone for the Senate, is a su per-solid Blue when it comes to the Bay Area.
You won’t see Alameda’s Barbara Lee sweating the midterms.
She sought a 12th term this week and it was practically automatic.
She won in 2020 with over 92% of the vote, and this year anyone running against her is considered a masoch ist in need of a landslide.
That’s good for Lee and her constituents. No one is going to chase out your rep.
But is that good for democracy? Wouldn’t a little com petition help sometime? Bite your tongue.
Let Lee die in Congress if she wants. She’s represented the East Bay well.
It’s the 434 other House seats we’ve got to worry about.
And that’s the problem. We’re good about Alameda County. But the country?
Republicans could easily wrest away the majority in the House with dozens of seats considered coinflips.
And in the Senate, it would take just one seat to flip for Republicans to gain control.
As I write, the results are still trickling in.
But the first national exit polls tell you why our democ racy is in trouble.
There is no doubt that Joe Biden was elected in 2020. By any legitimate measure, the vote has withstood chal lenges and been upheld.
Yet, when voters were asked, “Do you believe Joe Biden was legitimately elected president back in 2020?”
Sixty-three percent of voters said yes.
And a whopping 34% said no.

RABBIT HUNTING SUCCESS
Rabbit hunting is one of the oldest sports in the good ole outdoors of West Tennessee. However, for some hunt ers it is still as exciting as the first time they ever went hunting.
After a long nine month wait it is almost unbearable trying to get to November to get a chance at chasing bun nies again. For a rabbit hunter it is the ultimate outdoor experience when the temps are cool and the hounds are sniffing.
Ironically all rabbits seem to be related to bugs bunny in the clever moves they can put on the beagles and the nimrod.
Rabbits will take the dogs on a long run almost com pletely out of hearing distance only to return to the same place the race first started from.
Dogs and hunters can be searching way off in the dis tance only to realize the hare is hiding right behind them listening to the dogs run the wrong way.
Out smarting rabbits is no easy task and it is a game of hide and go seek that the rabbit often wins. If you want to see a grown man turn into a little boy just watch the joy on his face while rabbit hunting.

“Get out the votes”
Members of the Jackson Madison NAACP branch gathered election night to support their candidates at the local branch offices. NAACP encouraged all people to go to the polls and vote for the candidates of their choice. Their efforts help bring about a good voter turnout this cycle with over 24,297 votes cast in Madison County. “Even though the turnout was above precious elections, that still less than half of the registered voters in the county, there’s still half or more registered voters not voting,” said newly re-elected branch President Mr Harrell Carter.

The Vote to Deny the Deniers
Cont’d from page 2
A third of voters are election deniers, all according to a CNN exit poll.
On top of that, when asked “Democracy in the U.S. is…”
“Somewhat threatened,” said 33% in the exit poll.
But “Very threatened,” was the sentiment of 37%.
Seventy percent of the voters sensed some threat.
Voters know something is wrong. Let’s hope they voted to deny the deniers.
Fighting Lies, Denials and Misinformation
As America voted, it’s a little more than a week after the SCOTUS affirmative action hearing.
But why bury a good wedge when it’s still hot?
Democracy deniers out there aren’t ready to quit a little fear-mongering to rile up the conservative base.
One Asian American voter brought to my attention a flyer used in the closing days of the campaign.
The hit piece screams the claim “Joe Biden and LeftWing officials are engaged in widespread racial discrimina tion against WHITE and ASIAN AMERICANS.”
It’s 100% false but backed up by out-of-context headlines from right-wing news sources.
But the hit piece shares the formula put forth by an ti-civil rights activist Ed Blum, the mastermind behind the Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) attack on race-con
scious admissions at Harvard and the University of North Carolina.
And since they’ve ridden this from the lower courts all the way to the Supreme Court for years, other con servative anti-civil rights folks are willing to steal the approach.
People like the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant advisor Stephen Miller.
He’s proudly started something called America First Legal, a right-wing group intending to be the conserva tive answer to the American Civil Liberties Union.
No one will ever mistake the ACLU with this new-fan gled AFL which believes that spreading lies as truth un der the guise of free speech is part of the American way.
Sounds like good ole Republican rhetoric.
But the AFL is sending out this racist propaganda piece to voters mostly on East Coast.
Will it be a thing going forward? Asian Americans being allied with whites in all things regarding race?
It’s pure misinformation used to split apart our BIPOC diversity coalitions and deny all of us a true sense of democracy.

Updated: Nov 22, 2022 / 11:54 AM CST
The 15-year-old teen in this incident has been charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault Against a First Responder, and Felony Evading Arrest. He is currently still being hospitalized for his injuries.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A suspect is in critical condition, and a police officer is injured Monday following a shooting and car crash involving a Memphis Police officer. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the case, said the person who was shot was a teenager. MPD said they got a call at 10:40 a.m. about a stolen vehicle that was occupied by four armed people in the 2500 block of Peres Avenue in North Memphis. When police got there, they found the vehicle empty. However, they said one person then jumped in the driver’s seat and sped off. Preliminary information from police states the officer fired his weapon. The suspect was struck by gunfire, and he crashed the vehicle at Chelsea and Boxwood. We watched cell phone video of the confrontation. It showed an officer approaching the car and yelling at the teen to stay away from it. The teen ignores him, gets in the vehicle, and tries to speed away coming within inches of hitting the officer as the cop raised his gun and repeatedly pulled the trigger What happened before the shooting is unknown and is being investigated by TBI.
“For reasons still under investigation, the officer fired at the driver as he attempted to flee,” TBI spokeswoman Keli McAlister said. The suspect was taken to Regional One in critical condition. The officer was also taken to a hospital for non-critical injuries from the incident. TBI said the officer was not shot.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jermarcus Johnson, the fourth man accused in the murder of rapper Young Dolph, made his first court appearance at 201 Poplar Tuesday morning.
Johnson is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.
Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton, Jr., died after being shot multiple times inside Makeda’s Cookies on Airways Boulevard Nov. 17, 2021.
Johnson was taken into custody Friday after turning himself in to the Multi-Agency Gang Unit.
Three other men have been arrested in connection to Young Dolph’s murder.
Jermarcus Johnson’s half-brother Justin Johnson, also known by his stage name Straight Drop, was arrested, along with Cornelius Smith.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy named Justin Johnson and Smith as the two gunmen who shot into Makeda’s.
FOX13 learned in court that Justin Johnson’s phone privileges have been suspended after he allegedly released a rap song through a jail phone.
He can now only communicate with his attorney.
Judge Lee Coffee said Justin Johnson is under an interim order for administrative isolation, meaning he cannot use the phone or have any visitation privileges unless it is his attorney. Hernandez Govan has also been arrested. Mulroy said that Govan is the one who ordered the murder. He pled not guilty to all charges last week.

Recipes from Two Centuries of African Ameri can Cooking: A Cookbook Hardcover – November 5, 2019 by Toni Tipton-Martin (Author) Kindle $9.99 Hardcover $20.07 Spiral-bound $33.99 JAMES BEARD AWARD WINNER • IACP AWARD WINNER • IACP BOOK OF THE YEAR • TONI TIPTON-MARTIN NAMED THE 2021 JULIA CHILD AWARD RECIPIENT NAMED ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • The New Yorker • NPR • Chicago Tribune • The Atlantic • BuzzFeed • Food52
Throughout her career, Toni Tipton-Martin has shed new light on the history, breadth, and depth of African American cuisine. She’s introduced us to black cooks, some long forgotten, who established much of what’s considered to be our national cuisine. After all, if Thomas Jefferson introduced French haute cuisine to this country, who do you think actually cooked it?
In Jubilee, Tipton-Martin brings these masters into our kitchens. Through recipes and stories, we cook along with these pioneering figures, from enslaved chefs to middle- and upper-class writers and entrepreneurs. With more than 100 recipes, from classics such as Sweet Potato Biscuits, Seafood Gumbo, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, and Pecan Pie with Bourbon to lesser-known but even more decadent dishes like Bourbon & Apple Hot Toddies, Spoon Bread, and Baked Ham Glazed with Champagne, Jubilee presents techniques, ingredi ents, and dishes that show the roots of African American cooking—deeply beautiful, culturally diverse, fit for celebration.
PRAISE FOR JUBILEE
“There are precious few feelings as nice as one that comes from falling in love with a cook book. . . . New techniques, new flavors, new narratives—everything so thrilling you want to make the recipes over and over again . . . this has been my experience with Toni Tipton-Mar tin’s Jubilee.”—Sam Sifton, The New York Times

SKILLET JUNCTION
“I’m so proud to know Jacob and Regina. Jacob and I go way back to our Chili’s Grill & Bar days. He worked the expo line, and I served. Back then he talked about opening a restaurant.
He, Regina and their family now own and operate 3 restaurants in Jackson!
Their newest venture, Skillet Junction, is a great place to actually get brunch in downtown Jackson. Check them out!”

FORMER COUNCILMAN ENDORSES BYRON ELAM
- Cont’d from page 3
on the City’s Redistricting Committee. Byron was the only courageous dissenting vote for the current plan, on the com mittee - but he didn’t stop there. He single-handedly researched and contacted noted redistricting experts. He then secured an avenue through which those experts could be compensated (Jackson-Madison County NAACP). Byron was able to build consensus among the council and his fellow committee members. Ultimately, the council voted unanimously in favor of redistricting, largely due to Byron’s efforts”.
He went on to say, “this is exactly the type of leadership we need in Jackson, someone who is not afraid to tackle tough issues and works collaboratively toward solutions. I cannot think of anyone better positioned to succeed me. Most importantly, the constituents of District 3 deserve a passionate voice of reason as their representative”. He then asked them to nominate and vote for Byron Elam.
The City Council will vote for his replacement to fulfill his unexpired term on Tuesday, December 6, 2022.
