THE BIG THRILL

For some hunters it is all about the meat on the table and for others it West Tennessee all about how it got there. OUTDOORS Lovie Marable loves the challenge that comes with deer hunting and with Ray Jones that is why he likes to bow hunt. He takes his hunting skills learned in Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com West Tennessee to challenge the deer in Illinois. or 731-694-8614 It seems to be working for him the way he is able to harvest deer with his bow hunting skills. It is much more difficult to hunt with bows than guns because of the skill involved. It levels the playing field more for the deer but it allows hunters to quietly harvest the game without disturbing the woods. Bow hunting also allows the hunter to hunt during times when guns are not allowed. Mr. Marable has mastered both and uses his skills to keep food on the table and have adventure in the Great Outdoors. PHOTO IS LOVIE MARABLE AND HIS TRUSTED BOW WITH A DOE.

In Memory of my Brother, PATRICK CRAIG PATEY

My Friends, it is with great personal sadness that I announce on behalf of the Patey Family that my dear Brother and only sibling Patrick C. Patey (“Pat”) has passed away. We were very very close and with his retirement as the Public Relations Director for the Dallas Salvation Army in the Fall of 2019 he moved back to Jackson after 35 years & brought such joy, hope and excitement to not only Dad (Buddy Patey), but also to us as Brothers for which we looked forward to a long additional future here...back together in our beloved Jackson & Madison County community which Pat loved so much. Notwithstanding the palpable and painful loss I am undergoing in this moment, I must say that It was an incredible blessing and gift to have Pat back “home”, and, until Dad’s illness & death we all had the best time for 14 months with dinners, stories, laughter, projects, family gatherings and all in all we just generally a blast! My Brother was fun, kindhearted and easy to spend time with! He was an incredibly humble Christian Man & I loved him with ALL of my heart. Our Family will have a private graveside Funeral on Saturday 12/11/21 at Highland Memorial Gardens. All inquiries may be directed to George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home. - Mark Patey

Praying for the Buchanan Family! Thinking back, I can remember the days when I was a kid at the Boys and Girls Club and you were the light to the community. You made us believe in ourselves and instilled in us that we had the potential to be great! When I was elected to the city council, you took me under your wing to mold, protect and teach me. You were determined that you were not going to let me fail. Once again, you were my leader, role model and shining light. I’m going to miss you calling me JD, your calls, our long talks and your passion for the community. Without a doubt, your leadership to the city of Jackson will be greatly missed! Thank you for your guidance, leadership, friendship and trust. I will never forget you telling me when I got married, you were going to wear a red tuxedo to my wedding! You will always be remembered as a legend to the Boys and Girls Club and City of Jackson and a pillar to the East Jackson Community. And Your Point is . . . Stroke Survivor, Mia Russell says . . .

“PLEASE HELP ME REGAIN MY INDEPENDENCE!”

On January 9, 2017, life changed as I knew it. Prior to that date, I was a private duty LPN enjoying taking care of sick children, studying to become an RN, and was known around town for my unique crochet designs. Even though I’d been diagnosed with Lupus in 2008, I had adjusted and life was good. But, that all changed when out of the middle of nowhere, I suffered a massive stroke. I can’t describe what I felt on that Monday evening when my mother found me on my bedroom floor where I later learned I had been for more than three hours, fighting for my life. I spent the next 52 days in the hospital which included an emergency craniotomy, and in March was sent home with part of my skull missing, paralyzed on my right side, partially blind in my right eye and extensive damage to the language and memory center of my brain leaving me with aphasia and unable to read and write. Thus, the lifelong rehab journey began. Fast forward four and a half years and I’m progressing along. I’m walking with a cane, reading at a fifth grade level, and my vision and speech are gradually improving. However I’m still not able to use my right arm and hand. In early 2020, my physical therapist told me about an orthotic device called the MyoPro that he felt could possibly restore functioning to my paralyzed right arm and hand. It would be designed specifically for me and would work by reading nerve signals from the surface of my skin thereby activating small motors to move my arm and hand. Excited, we began the long application process. After a virtual assessment by a clinician from the company that makes the MyoPro, I was a good candidate so the next step was to have my insurance approve it. The approval was denied by the insurance company. I appealed and in January of 2021, a judge sided with the insurance company. The reason given for the denial was that the device was “experimental,” which made no sense to us since we had observed a patient in our home town being trained to use the device that was paid for by the insurance company. We also had documentation of several federal appeals where judges ruled in favor of the client, but none of that seemed to matter in our case. After four denials we felt we had been treated unfairly and left with no choice except to look for other ways to pay for the MyoPro. My rehab journey hasn’t been easy but anyone who knows me, including doctors and therapists, know that I am determined to regain as much of my independence as possible. My goals are to resume doing things such as preparing my food, styling my hair, and other daily activities that most people take for granted; and to complete my RN and return to gainful employment in some capacity. In 2019, due to right eye weakness, I failed the evaluation to get my driver’s license reinstated. Disappointed but not discouraged, at the suggestion of the vocational rehab therapist, I resumed crocheting with my non-dominant left hand and knee. I am not a quitter. I believe that the MyoPro brace will help me regain my independence so that I can in turn continue to help others. Your donation to Help Hope Live would bring me closer to making this a reality and would be greatly appreciated!

Relevance, Thankfulness, and Hope

I have had the unique opportunity to be an educator in JMCSS at Liberty Tech High School until Fall Break. After Fall Break I was invited to sub at GCHS. Quite the contrast to be sure.

As we approach the Christmas Break, I have reflected on my time a South Gibson County High School last fall. At that time the students of the Class of 2021 seemed to be thankful to be on campus once again. They did not seem to mind wearing a mask and some of the various COVID related guidelines they had to follow. I subbed in other schools throughout the district and to me, it seemed that there was a spirit of hope from the students that they would be able to continue to be on campus and see their friends and teachers in person. It was a learning experience for all of us, including the teachers that used Microsoft Teams and Zoom to connect with their classes. I switched to JMCSS in the Spring of 2021, after a meeting with Dr. Marlon King as I expressed my desire to become a part of the “Winning Team” at JMCSS. He requested I go to Liberty Tech High School and I was well received by administrators and staff. I discovered that there are many exceptional students at Liberty and the faculty was focused on equipping the students with the academic tools they would need to be successful beyond graduation. There is no question that JMCSS is on the upswing and the future looks bright for all students that can recognize the opportunity.

Class of 2022: Putting It All Together

I heard a new word on the campus of Liberty Tech HS this Fall and much to my surprise, I heard the same word misapplied at Gibson County High School as well. Perhaps a definition would help. RELEVANT; Having a significant and demonstrable bearing on the matter at hand. (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Now I understand that seniors are upperclassmen in the school, but for them to feel that they know what curriculum is best for their development and chances for success moving forward; is doubtful at best. I find that as a substitute teacher the students not only know what the teacher expects, they also know which classroom expectations can be overlooked or subverted. Primarily, so that they can have a generous amount of time to use their “time bandits” or smartphones. I would like to feel that I have adequately navigated these “waters” in the classroom setting but sometimes I wonder. Seniors you have a unique opportunity to set the bar high for those that follow behind you. In Jackson the new Madison Academic High School in my humble opinion, is the future of education across the nation. The next graduating class will be better equipped than the class of 2022, so stay ahead of the competition. Be thankful for your opportunities and hope that you will continue to be relevant ten years from now! “As a reader, you can rise above your competition, grow yourself as a leader, and obtain a competitive advantage by reading more books.” ~Jeff Brown and Jesse Wisnewski (Read To Lead).

Christmas I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old, familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And thought how, as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Till ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Of peace on earth, good-will to men! Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned Of peace on earth, good-will to men! It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born Of peace on earth, good-will to men! And in despair I bowed my head; “There is no peace on earth,” I said; For hate is strong, And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good-will to men!” Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: “God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men.” Copyright © Dakota Hershey -2017

HUMBOLDT OFFICIALS PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFO ON LAST TUESDAY SHOOTING

December 2, 2021 Ashley Luningham wbbjtv.com HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Humboldt officials gave an update on the Tuesday night deadly shooting at the high school. Humboldt police Lt. Tony Williams says the shooting had no connection with Humboldt Schools. He says it was between the suspect Jadon Hardiman and victim Justin Kevon Pankey, who was shot and killed at the scene. They say the other two victims that were shot were not involved. “We do not believe that they were targeted. We do not believe that they were even part of the incident. We think that they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Williams said. Humboldt Schools Superintendent Dr. Janice Epperson says Pankey (right) was a former Humboldt student. Epperson says they had two security personnel at the game, but are going to increase security in the future. The district has also talked about selling tickets digitally only for future events. “It also gives us a roster of everybody who is in the building and at the game. We are also going to heighten the security. Because we know we do have to have some way of detecting if weapons are coming in,” Epperson said. Epperson says on Wednesday, they set up QR codes on each school website for students to reach out if they needed to talk. And after welcoming back students and staff on Thursday, school counselors were able to address their concerns. “Enter any question that he or she might have been dealing with, or concerns that they may have been facing. Counselors were able to get that if there were any before the students returned today,” Epperson said.

Authorities say Hardiman (left) turned himself in on Wednesday night to Humboldt police. He is currently being held at the Gibson County Correctional Facility with a $1.5 million bond. District Attorney Frederick Agee says they will be prosecuting Hardiman to the full extent of the law. “It is our intent, and it will be my mission as the DA to make sure that Jadon Hardiman never walks as a free man again,” Agee said. Hardiman is being charged with first-degree murder, first-degree murder with serous bodily injury, attempted first-degree murder, three counts of armed and dangerous felonies, tampering with evidence, and carrying a weapon on school property.
