BRIGHT SPOT
CONGRATULATIONS to the West Tennessee Bright Spot Award winners, Tennessee Department of Health West TN Region! “Athletes: Keeping Them in the Game” is different from other programs addressing opioid abuse. The initiative intentionally involved local community leaders in both the planning and implementation phases so participants would be armed with the knowledge and tools necessary to encourage policy change designed to prevent opioid misuse among high school athletes and students at large. Pictured above are; State Representatives Johnny W. Shaw and Chris Todd, Director of Community Health Services (Western Region), Myrtle Russell (holding plaque), Marilyn Barnes, TN Dept of Health Regional Director and Tennessee State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Lisa Piercey, along with other Health Promotion staff. CRAPPIE BITING NOW Crappie fishing is going on right now in the West Tennessee lakes and ponds. For those willing to brave the winter weather the results are fantastic this time of the year. Crappie bite all year around and the big ones usually are more aggressive than the smaller fish in cold weather. Once they are found in the water presentation and patience is the key to catching them. There is less pressure because many outdoorsmen are hunting and that opens the door for others to fish their favorite lakes alone. For information on techniques and best lures and jigs to use give Lovie Marable a call and he can turn you on to what jigs are working best for him. He costume makes jigs and they can be seen on line and even purchased on line. Give him a call at 404 981 4967 and place your order so you will be on you way to catching slab crappie while everyone else is trying to catch a buck in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. 12/23/2019 -Central Precinct detectives this morning charged Brandon Brown, 32, with criminal homicide for the overnight beating death of a 49-year-old blind homeless man inside a parking garage of the Music City Central bus station. Efforts are continuing to notify the Brandon Brown, 32 victim’s family. At 2 a.m., officers responded to a call at the bus station concerning Brown, who appeared to have been assaulted. He had a small laceration above his eye and blood on his white sweater. Brown did not provide any pertinent information on how his injury occurred. He was taken to General Hospital for treatment. Later in the morning, a security staff member at the bus station found the victim beaten to death on the 5th floor of the parking garage. The weapon used was a fire extinguisher. When officers went to follow up with Brown, they learned that he had just been discharged from the hospital. North Precinct officers Joshua Green and Cory Fetner spotted Brown a short time later on foot near William Edmondson Park and 16th Avenue North where he was taken into custody. During an interview with Detective Leonard Peck, Brown implicated himself in the murder. The motive is unclear. Brown’s bond is set at $1.2 million.

Vargason, Hall charged in bank, wire fraud scheme - David Thomas - @DavidThomasWNWS
Ben Vargason, (right) owner of Great American Sports, and Jennifer Azbill Hall (left), an employee for B&H Finance, a mortgage company in Jackson, have been charged with knowingly and intentionally devising a scheme to defraud and to obtain money by means of false and fraudulent pretenses monies and funds under the custody and control of a federally insured financial institution. According to the indictment, which was handed down by in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee - Eastern Division - Vargason and Hall were part of the scheme where Hall would open retired or closed mortgage accounts in the name of former and current B&H customers. Hall would obtain loan funds using the names and identities of the customers without their knowledge and consent. It was further part of the scheme to defraud that Hall would take B&H Finance checks, drawn on the Commercial Bank account, and would forge the signature of R.S. on the checks. Hall would make the checks payable to the names of the unwitting customers, or to B&H Investments. It was further part of the scheme to defraud that Hall would take the B&H Finance checks to Benjamin Vargason (‘Vargason’) at his business, Great American Sports, in Jackson. Hall would endorse the checks with the purported signatures of the unwitting customers, or as B&H investments in Vargason’s presence. It was further part of the scheme to defraud that Vargason would deposit the endorsed checks into his company’s bank account at BancorpSouth, a bank insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Vargason would then give Hall a portion of the amount of the checks in cash, or write Hall a check from his company’s bank account for a portion of the amount of the deposited checks. Over the course of the scheme and artifice to defraud, the defendants misappropriated approximately $819,916.63 from B&H Finance. If convicted, Vargason faces 20 years for each year of nine counts of bank fraud, and Hall faces 20 years for each year of counts one through nine for bank fraud, and 20 years for each year of wire fraud for counts 10 through 20.
