FAMILY OF WOMAN KILLED IN AMBULANCE CRASH FILES WRONGFUL DEATH LAWSUIT December 4, 2018ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — The family of a woman killed in an ambulance crash in Nashville has filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The family of Nyema Jackson has filed a wrongful death lawsuit in connections with the Friday night crash on Interstate 40 in Nashville. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the woman’s daughter against West Tennessee Healthcare and the driver of the ambulance, Deborah Schichtel. Jackson was reportedly being taken by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville at the time of the crash. The lawsuit alleges that Schichtel lost control while she was traveling on I-40, causing Jackson’s death. No criminal charges have been filed against Schichtel. The lawsuit is asking for damages to be awarded to Jackson’s daughter and another child. West Tennessee Healthcare has said they do not comment on any pending litigation.

St. Louis Officers Indicted in Beating of Undercover Cop Posing as Protester By Jim Salter In this Sept. 17, 2017 file photo, police chase vandals as demonstrators march in response to a not guilty verdict in the trial of former St. Louis police officer Jason Stockley in St. Louis. Stockley was acquitted in the 2011 killing of a black man following a high-speed chase. Four St. Louis police officers were indicted Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, by a federal grand jury. Three are accused of beating an undercover colleague during a protest over the acquittal of Stockley, a white officer who was accused in the death of a black suspect. Those three and a fourth officer are also accused of conspiring to cover up the crime.ÊJeff Roberson/AP, File Three St. Louis police officers were indicted Thursday for allegedly beating an undercover colleague during a 2017 protest and, along with a fourth officer, conspiring to cover up the crime. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the indictments of officers Dustin Boone, Randy Hays, Christopher Myers and Bailey Colletta. All four are suspended without pay, the city said. The indictment follows an FBI investigation requested last year by St. Louis police. The September 2017 acquittal of former police officer Jason Stockley set off weeks of protests. Stockley, who is white, was found not guilty in the 2011 death of a black suspect, Anthony Lamar Smith. The indictment alleges that Boone, Hays and Myers beat the undercover officer during a protest on Sept. 17, 2017, and that the three along with Colletta conspired to cover it up. www.washingtonpost.com C O N N E L L

Xavier Shotwell, 35, had been shot and killed, police said. Family says he was a father of four. Another man who was in the truck but was not injured told police the suspects approached Shotwell in his truck and attempted to rob him. They rammed his truck with their vehicle, then began shooting, police said. The suspects sped off in a black Mercedes, and a white pickup was also seen in the parking lot at the time of the shooting. Police said the occupants of that truck were also involved. The black Mercedes was later found abandoned and burned nearby at Orchi and Highland. A still shot from a surveillance video shows one of the suspects holding an assault weapon during a carjacking on Cox Street. Investigators said it had been stolen in a carjacking Thursday morning from the 1000 block of South Cox, in which suspects robbed a man pulling into his driveway after coming home from work at 5 a.m. During this carjacking, a white Toyota Tacoma pickup was also used by the suspects, police said. Police noticed the white pickup around 2 a.m. Friday at Lamar and Airways, and conducted a traffic stop. There were six people inside, all of whom have been arrested and charged in these incidents. POLICE: MAN FORCED WOMAN TO PERFORM SEX ACT BEFORE STEALING HERÊSUV Police say Curtis Wright rode his sister’s pink bicycle to the scene of the crime at Madison Avenue and Idlewild on the night of OCTOBER 12, 2018.
Wright, wearing a red bandana over part of his face, approached the woman with a gun and demanded her keys and cell phone before pushing her to the ground and assaulting her. He then took her Honda SUV. But he left behind the pink bicycle at the apartment complex. Officers tagged it as evidence, since there were no children in the apartment complex and the victim had never seen the bike before. On Thursday, officers responded to a suspicious vehicle call on South Parkway. It turned up as stolen when police ran the tags. Wright was standing near the vehicle and ran when officers spotted him, police said. A chase ensued, and he was found hiding under a vacant house. Police said Wright waived his rights and admitted to the crimes, and told them the bicycle belonged to his sister. The Honda was recovered. Police said they found a red bandana inside. WREG.COM

Tennessee can’t revoke driver licenses of people who can’t pay traffic fines, judge says Adam Tamburin, Nashville Tennessean- Published 3:19 p.m. CT Oct. 17, 2018 Tennessee can no longer revoke people’s driverÊlicenses because they cannot afford to pay traffic tickets, a federal judge said Tuesday in a landmark ruling that could affect as many as 291,000 people. The new order, issued by U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger, comes in aÊSeptember 2017 class-action suit challenging a state law that allowed officials to revoke someone’s license if they didn’t pay a fine for a traffic violation. Trauger granted the plaintiff’s motion for a preliminary injunction that stops the state from doing so while the suit is pending. Her order also opened the door for hundreds of thousands of Tennesseans to get their licenses back if they cannot pay outstanding traffic fines. The new ruling built on a JulyÊorder fromÊTraugerÊin a separate caseÊthat barred the state from revoking licenses based on unpaid court costs. “It’s sort of the next logical step,” said Josh Spickler, a Memphis attorney with Just CityÊwho was part of both suits. “To me and to the hundreds of thousands of people in Tennessee who’ve had their licenses suspended for this reason, it’s just as big if not bigger. “It’s like an exclamation point on the previous order.” But the impact for Tennesseans who can now get their licenses back could truly be life-changing, she said. “Hundreds of thousands of indigent Tennesseans now have the opportunity to reinstate their driver’s licenses — and more importantly their ability to access jobs, medical care, and the countless important needs of daily life,” Wilner said in a statement. HOW DO I GET MY LICENSE BACK?Ê There are several ways to determine if you are eligible.Ê Call 866-903-7357.ÊThis number is for a state reinstatement center. It’s their job to help you determine if you’re eligible to have your driver’s license reinstated, and if you are, help you get it back. Someone should answer calls to that number Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. andÊ4:30 p.m. CST. The number will be busy, so keep calling if you can’t get through to someone immediately. Visit this website:Êdl.safety.tn.gov.ÊYou’ll need to fill out a short form, so have your Social Security number and driver’s license number (if you know it) handy.

Harrell Carter The Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch will discuss litigation with our state and national NAACP legal Advisors. That’s a county proposal,” Councilman David Cisco said. After hearing about financial options as well as opinions from Superintendent Dr. Eric Jones and City Council members, it was time to vote.
