Construction of the new South Side football stadium was supposed to begin in November. However the figures that were used in the recent bid process were two-years old. Between the change of actual costs and the omission of needed items (like demolition) the project now sits 3 $200,000 underfunded.

CALVINÊFARMER October 01, 1925 February 03, 2019 Calvin Farmer was born on October 1, 1925— the 9th of 10 children born to the late Oscar and Sarah Farmer—in the Salem community near Humboldt, Tennessee. After starting high school, Calvin was drafted to serve in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was assigned to the 1328th Army Air Force Base Unit which provided supplies to the IndiaBurma campaign. After the war, he received his diploma and married his high school friend and sweetheart, the late Ollie Ruth Claybrook Farmer. Calvin worshipped and served at multiple church congregations in Humboldt. He was baptized at Salem Baptist Church; a deacon, Boy Scout Master, Superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the Male Chorus at Morning Star Baptist Church; and a devoted member to his Sunday School class at St. James Baptist Church. He had multiple professional careers in construction and insurance.Ê Most notably, Calvin committed himself to public service, becoming the first black man elected to serve as alderman in the city of Humboldt. He championed the integration of municipal offices, calling for the placement of black employees at the utility company, as well as the fire and police departments, to name a few. Calvin will lay in repose on Wednesday, February 13 at the Baskerville Funeral Home from 1:00-5:00 p.m, followed by family visitation from 5:00-7:00 p.m. His celebration of life service will be held at Morning Star Baptist Church on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 6:00 p.m and via live video stream atÊhttps://morningstarhumboldt.org/Ê. He will be interred at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 10:45 a.m.Ê In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club in Humboldt, TN.

North Side’s stadium project is more than $300,000 underfunded and at a stand still as well. Because this is a “once in 50 years” type of project, I would encourage you to contact your local elected officials for additional information. When I think about the underwhelming effort that was given in building the Liberty locker room, stadium, and track, my concerns for the South Side and North Side projects are warranted. February 4, 2019 wbbjtv.com GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Deputies say two recent, unrelated traffic stops both led to arrests on meth and gun charges. From left: Erin Brock andÊNove Kephart The sheriff’s department says they see a common factor in two of the latest arrests — methamphetamine. Nove Kephart, 25, of Trenton faces several charges. “The deputy ultimately used a K-9 narcotic detection dog,” Sheriff Thomas said. “Once the dog alerted to the vehicle, they searched it and found just over 40 grams, approximately 42 grams of methamphetamine, which is a significant amount.” Kephart also had scheduled narcotics in his vehicle and a loaded pistol, which was found in the area where he ran when stopped by authorities, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies say the street value of the amount of drugs found on him is about $4,500. Erin Brock, 34, of Huntingdon was arrested in a different incident. “While he was talking to her, he found a bag of methamphetamine in her coat pocket, and then she removed another bag from her pants and tried to dump it out on the ground,” Sheriff Thomas said. “Once they got her to the jail, a female correctional officer removed another bag of meth from her person. All total that was just over 20 grams of meth.” Brock also reportedly had a loaded gun in her vehicle along with hydrocodone and morphine pills with no prescription. The medication was found in a plastic container that she voluntarily handed over to the deputy, according to the sheriff’s office. The approximate street value of the drugs found on her was about $2,500. Kephart’s bond was set at $75,000. Brock’s was set at $20,000. Both are currently in the Gibson County Correctional Facility.

Some low life broke into our house while we were at my mom’s funeral this afternoon February 10th...our neighbor got this pic of the vehicle, 95-2000 White Ford Explorer. Got my new laptop, 3 jewelry boxes and knife collection and other items. They tried 2 doors, the sheriff thinks he knows which one they came into, ransacked our house, broke a window out but the ® sheriff does not think they came in the “We carry all of your convenient store needs” window due to how it was broken an where it was. This is on the Odell Rd. area. Please post if you 731-238-2258 see the vehicle!

Two more enter Jackson Mayor’s Race The position of Mayor of the City of Jackson is now being sought after by two new declared candidates.Ê South Jackson councilwoman, Vicky Foote and businessman Mark Johnstone.Ê “The simple fact the incumbent isn’t running means more people think they have a better chance of winning, said Dr. Sean Evans, Professor of political science at Union University”Ê Currently there are 6 declared candidates for the position of Mayor of the City of Jackson.Ê They are Jimmy Eldridge, Scott Conger, Vicky Foote, Daryl Hubbard, mark Johnstone and Dr. Jerry Woods.Ê All of the candidates are vying to replace outgoing Mayor Jerry Gist.Ê “The most obvious reasons more people are running for mayor is that there is an open seat”, Evans said.Ê Some may say there are a few key issues in this years Vicky Foote race, including education, transportation, and economic development”Ê Evans said the particular candidate voters would be be drawn to would depend on what the voters see as the most important issues. “If they think its education, it might be one candidate, if its transporation, it maybe another candidate.”Ê Another factor could Mark Johnstone be a candidates past experience in certain areas of concerns such as former State Representative Jimmy Eldridge has 16 years and has so far raised the most money from supporters, and Scott Conger former president of LANA, raised the second highest amount of money. Dr. Jerry Woods is an educator with Lane College and the only African American in the race.Ê Mark Johnstone is a local businessman and previously served on the Madison County Commission.Ê Vicky Foote represents south Jackson on the City Council and she may have to respond to concerns of lack of infrastructure repairs and the fiasco with the Bemis Mill park issue which is still not completed.Ê Former city councilman Scott Conger may have to answer to critics who blame city council members for taking over 12 Million dollars away from the school system in a dispute with Madison County.Ê City of Jackson voters will make their decision for Mayor and 9 city council members May 7.
