The Legacy

February is black history month and during this time my thoughts usually find their way back to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. If you draw a line from Ebenezer Church in Atlanta over to Memphis, down to Montgomery Alabama and then back to Atlanta you will outline a space in which many of the civil rights activities that Dr. King was a part of occurred.

I grew up in the middle of that space. I was young but still I was very much aware of the things that were happening at that time. I saw it in real time, I read the newspapers, watched the television and was privy to the reactions and responses of those around me so I have a clear memory of those times and remember living in the atmosphere and the mood of those years. I realized that important things were happening.

James Earl Ray slept in a seedy motel in my home town the night before he went to Memphis. The motel was attached to an equally seedy beer joint that I visited a few times in my youth.

Not long out of high school I ran a store in Canton, Mississippi. Canton was ground zero for the civil rights movement in Mississippi. I was able to see a lot of the main participants of the movement first hand.

The civil rights movement was not only big news at the time, it was also local news. Life went on and these were side-bar issues to most unless one was actively involved.

My school integrated when I was a fourth grader. There was really no notable difference. Most of the new students lived in our community and were already known to us.

I say all this to get to my main point, or rather my recommendation, for black history month.

History and people look different at various stages of your life. The adult life of Dr. King took place during the onset of the “video era”. We have hours of interviews and speeches that we can review and study. This has not been the case with most historical figures. In the past we only had short news reels or end of life biographies to learn from. Go and listen to, and look at, Dr. King.

Most people only know the one or two lines from a couple of the more famous speeches but there are numerous interviews with CBS, NBC, the BBC, Meet the Press, Mike Douglas, David Susskind and many more. In fact there are enough that one could spend all day on it. You may not have all day to spend on it,but I suggest a couple of hours at least .That is enough time to get a great perspective on his personality, his thoughts, his vision for the future and his interactions with others. I think you will come away pleased that you took that time to do so.

TOWN OF HENNING OVERCOMES BIG FINANCIAL CHALLENGES

The small town of Henning, Tennessee (population 871) in Lauderdale County has made extraordinary progress in improving its financial health after it found itself in a troubling situation that threatened the town’s solvency.

Less than 10 years ago, the Town of Henning was spending too much money and was improperly borrowing from its water, sewer, and gas funds to support general government operations. By fiscal year 2015, the town owed its utility funds more than $500,000, which was greater than the total amount of revenue collected by the town that year.

The Comptroller’s Office, in cooperation with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service, worked with the town to establish a corrective action plan to repay the town’s interfund debt to its utility funds. The town government, under the leadership of former Mayor Marva Temple, also had to make difficult decisions to reduce its spending so that it could operate on a balanced budget.

According to the recently released audit report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021, Henning has successfully repaid its utility funds and has saved nearly two years of annual expenditures in its general fund – a remarkable improvement.

“I want to commend the town’s leaders for making an incredible turnaround,” said Comptroller Jason Mumpower. “Henning’s governing body demonstrated leadership and took personal responsibility to change the town’s future. By following a corrective action plan, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen has shown its respect for the town’s financial health and its citizens.

Arlington Hosts VEX IQ Tournament, Advances to State Competition

Inaugural event highlights district’s growth in STEM education

JACKSON, Tenn. - Jackson-Madison County Schools and community partners across the Hub City teamed up on Saturday to host the inaugural Arlington Winter Classic, a VEX IQ robotics tournament composed of schools from across middle and west Tennessee. Robotics team 47141B the “TN Titans” representing Arlington Elementary School has advanced to the Tennessee VEX IQ Elementary School State Championship.

“I was excited because this was my first time in the robotics competition, and I had a good feeling about it,” said Fabian Taylor, a member of the Arlington team. Prior to the tournament, teams built a robot, documented their process in an engineering notebook, and potentially programmed their robot to score points autonomously.

“The community and Superintendent King have been immensely supportive of our efforts to offer robotics and STEM at the elementary school level. We’re grateful to all of the volunteers who donated time and resources to support this tournament,” said Dr. Shemon Reaves, principal of Arlington Elementary School.

Qualifying matches were a six-hour process in which each robot ran an individualized competition schedule as they competed in 1-minute matches to score points by moving game elements to specific positions on the field. At the end of the qualifying matches, the top teams played in the finals to determine the teamwork champions.

“Whether it’s Denmark, JASA, or Arlington, we have kids out here with skills and abilities to do this. They’re going to build on this experience and knowledge,” said Mr. Bobby Smith, 4th grade math and science teacher at Arlington. Mr. Smith also serves as the STEM coach.

Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, and Lane College provided refreshments for the numerous volunteers necessary to host the all-day tournament. Several Advanced Maintenance Technician students from Jackson State Community College served as referees and judges.

States Molly Plyler, Director of STEM and Science, “Competitive robotics is a wonderful way for students to learn content related to engineering, computer programming, math, and science. This event was a win for our school district and our community.”

RABBIT SCRAMBLE

Rabbit season is winding down with both rabbits and hunters scrambling around trying to survive the last few days of the season. It is a sad time for the hunters and a happy time for the rabbits.

The rabbits have relief knowing they don’t need to scramble around trying to get away from beagles all the time. Although it’s a game for the beagles it’s not anything funny about it for the rabbits and they bring their A game to every race.

Often when it is late season rabbits are more experienced at escaping and present a more difficult challenge.

Hunters on the other hand are having anguish knowing the scramble is about to close and nearly a year until they can resume their favorite pastime , the scramble .

The season comes to a February 28 and will not re-open until the second week of November. So hunters better hit the woods before the whistle is blown and the hounds are shut down for the season. Take a kid with you and they will be a step ahead for next season.

I can hear the Kodaks clicking, mechanical crickets on a summer afternoon, 1915, the gleaming white shirts confessing cleanliness.

The tortured body hangs, beaten and torn, like the remains of a pinata emptied on its candy and toys

By early evening the crowd has become less coherent, returning to familiar habits, reassured by the slow illumination of their halos.

the bankers and lawyers converge to debate removal, as if the corpse is an unexpected annoyance, the aftermath of a sudden storm.

On an excursion train back to Memphis a young girl is startled by her reflection in the window; a piece of bloodstained cloth - a souvenir from her father - has somehow gotten stuck in her hair. Across the aisle her brother sleeps, his blond hand dangling over the edge of the seat, as if suspended above an abyss, the gift of a long, black finger defiantly hooked into his fist, refusing to let go.

DEADLY

SHOOTING KILLS ONE

HAYWOOD CO. Tenn. — A shooting left one teen dead and another injured in a local county.

On Friday night at approximately 9:40 pm., Haywood Sheriff’s Deputies received a call that “Someone was shooting at son’s car.”

The victims were leaving a basketball game in Ripley, returning to Brownsville along Highway 19.

The suspects were driving an older model gray Dodge Charger. Deputies later located the victims on West Main near Sunset Circle in Brownsville. There were four occupants in the victim’s vehicle, all teenagers from Brownsville. The vehicle had been struck by several gunshot rounds.

Sheriff Billy Garrett says that one of the four victims received a graze wound, while a back seat passenger, Christine Marie Michael, age 17, received a fatal gunshot wound.

“The victim of course had been shot. She was in the back seat and emergency personnel was contacted. They arrived on the scene and worked with her some, but she was pronounced dead at the local hospital here in Brownsville,” said Sheriff Billy Garrett.
