WILDHOGS AT LAND BETWEEN THE LAKES

Thursday, 02-21-2019

West Tennessee OUTDOORS

Wildhogs have become a devastating problem at Land with Ray Jones Between the lakes and SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO causing farmers to rethink numberonecoach@hotmail.com their strategies. It is or 731-694-8614. debatable how they got there but they are populating faster than wildlife officials can control. Hogs breed twice yearly and once they establish breeding grounds it is an area that becomes dangerous because they are aggressive, destroy crops and carry diseases. They are omnivores eating anything in sight and have been seen in six counties. Tennessee and Kentucky wildlife officials have been working together to get the problem under control but so far trapping has been the most effective means, but it is not solving the problem. West Tennessee is evolving into home to many animals not native to our area and we had better get use to it because once they arrive they are here to stay. Keep your eyes open because you never know what you and the kids might see lurking in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT FILED IN FEDERAL COURT ALLEGING VIOLATIONS OF CIVIL RIGHTS A class action lawsuits has been filed in United States District Court alleges the City of Jackson and Jackson city officials failed to properly handle and maintain arrests warrants, violating the constitutional Attorney Mark Donahoe rights of defendants. representing plaintiffs in the The lawsuit filed Monday alleges Federal lawsuit against the City the City of Jackson, Chief of Police of Jackson Julian Wiser, and City Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard failed to adequately train and supervise employees resulting in arrest warrants not being sworn before a magistrate or clerk as the law requires. 26th Judicial District Attorney General Jody Pickens declined to comment on the pending litigation except to clarify that his office did not send out a press release on the issue, though he did speak with local media about a potential deficiency regarding the matter in January. Jackson Police Chief Julian Wiser said he could not comment on the case since he “has not been served yet” and City Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard said he would not comment on the matter until everyone involved in the lawsuit has been named. The suit alleges improperly sworn and executed arrest warrant and affidavits of complaints resulted in the unlawful arrest and detention of individuals before January 8, 2017 and after March 11, 2018. Steven Cox, one plaintiff was arrested by the Jackson Police Department in March 11, 2018 and spent one day in jail waiting for a court appearance for aggravated assault and kidnapping charges according to the suit. The other plaintiff, Kelly Freeman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence on January 8, 2017 and spent one day in jail before being released on bond. The lawsuit has named two plaintiffs but estimates that more than 1,000 individuals may have been impacted by this alleged oversight. The 4th Amendment to the constitution states “no warrants shall be issued without probable cause supported by “oath and affirmation.” The 14th Amendment states “no citizen shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.” “Plaintiffs and the other class members were illegally detained by the defendants and have suffered physical and mental injuries, severe emotional distress humiliation inconvenience and embarrassment and have had to retain legal counsel to defend and prosecute their rights,” the lawsuit states. The lawsuit has named two plaintiffs but estimates that more than 1,000 individuals may have been impacted by this alleged oversight. IN

Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network encourages motorist to obey speed limits With over 500 area volunteers the “Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network” works daily to keep traveling motorist “safe, ticket and accident free.” According to Founders Downtown Ricky Brown and Keith Sherley of 101.5FM Radio afternoon show “the whole purpose of this network of volunteers is to report accidents, traffic hazards, and street closures all in efforts to get people home safe.” Keith Sherley shares with the public daily area accidents reported by the DTRB Traffic Spotters Network. “Sometimes we have 8-10 reported accidents in a days time and we get the word out ASAP to motorist to help them avoid traffic jams, getting hung in accidents and to be mindful of speed zones especially in construction areas around west Tennessee,” said Sherley. Downtown Ricky Brown continues to grow the traffic spotters from JTA drivers, first responders, sheriff deputies, volunteer firemen, waste management drivers, JEA drivers, public works drivers and many area volunteers like Jeff Wall, Jeremy Chandler, Bobby George Robert Williams and hundreds of other faithful community volunteers. “It’s amazing how Downtown’s lead guided and directed this service all in the name of helping others simply get there safe without incident or ticket,” said Sherley. Speed is strictly enforced near the Farmer’s Market and The Lift in downtown Jackson.
