March 9, 2020 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman who posted on social media last week that she was abducted is now charged with false reports. Police say Casandra Moody posted on social media Thursday morning under the name Cassie Taylor that she was kidnapped and didn’t know where she was. Court documents say Moody was found around 11:30 Thursday morning at a home on Brooks Drive. She was alone in the house and doors were not locked. Court documents say Moody initially told investigators she had escaped from two men who abducted her, and later told investigators she was abducted by the owner of the home where she was found.

attorney, Human Resources Department, information technology department and a finance director. All county positions already provide services to other county departments and could also serve the sheriff’s office according to the motion in the lawsuit. Mayor Harris said “ by eliminating four positions would save the county more than $314,000 per year in salary expenses.” Sheriff Mehr said “the positions are acceptable under state law and a “vital part of the Sheriff’s office operations.” Sheriff Mehr said “we can show beyond a doubt these are needed positions.” Madison County is also asking the Court to eliminate positions at the West Tennessee Training Center including the training director, be eliminated or reduced as the Sheriff has shown no benefit to the Sheriffs Department or the County for this expense. According to County budget numbers the Madison County Sheriff’s office grew more than 25% over the last five years. When Mehr took office in 2015 the Department had about 230 employees.Ê MCSO spent about $1.7 million more on patrol staff pay and about $600,000 more on jail staff pay in 2018-2019 than it did in 2014-15. Mehr also creates a public information officers position with an annual salary of $43,596 and hired his wife , Michelle who serves as the departments “Major” managing accreditation, state and federal grants opportunities and hostage negotiations.Ê Michelle is the departments 10th highest paid employee making just over $62,000 per year. Monday’s County motion made no mention of Michelle Mehr’s position or the public information officers role. Mayor Harris said “the county may ask the court to eliminate other positions before the May court date If county officials determine that “Sheriff Mehr mismanagement has led to the employment of other assistants not needed for the effective operation of the Sheriff’s department.”

Cause and Effect…The Clock is Ticking! I have had occasion to closely monitor the situation with schools in JMCSS over the past couple of years. Prior to that I had met and conversed with Dr. Ruffin and had heard a lot of mixed comments pertaining to Dr. Nancy Zambito. I had the great privilege to have met and interacted with Dr. Eric Jones when he first came to town to assume the role of superintendent for JMCSS. In my estimation he and his team have accomplished amazing gains in education in a short span of time. Why—When—How? I had a longtime friend that I worked with many years ago call me and ask me why the county commission would not approve of building a new Madison Academic school. He had just attended his first county commission meeting and listened to an impassioned plea by Kyle Spurgeon CEO of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. Much had changed since this idea was proposed two years ago and estimates are well, estimates. His daughter is a student at Madison Academic and I agreed that they need a new school to continue their fine tradition of academic excellence. Just to be clear, the county commission did approve the public-private partnership and are proponents of new schools if there is fiscal responsibility involved with the decisions made. The city council has agreed to do their part in funding a new Madison Academic with generous financial support from the University of Memphis Lambuth and West TN Healthcare. This of course in pending approval from the state comptroller’s office. I submit that had the school board not ousted Dr. Jones that Pope Elementary would be opening in the fall of this school year. The county will be responsible for building a new Pope as well as reconditioning JCM. I have had conversations with many JCM alums and most of them have spoken highly of the caliber of education they received during their time there. Many a successful career was nurtured and developed by engaged and caring teachers in JMCSS. What’s Next? The school board is in the midst of a superintendent search (once again) so let us as a community support their decision as the three candidates, they have to choose from are exceptional and accomplished leaders and educators. There is a different atmosphere at the school board today. One of cooperation, light-heartedness, and focus that I had not witnessed over the past several months. Meaningful and effective change takes time and the new superintendent need the support of the school board, teachers, and the community in order to restore the luster to JMCSS that it once enjoyed prior to the last decade’s leadership spiral and subsequent carousel seeking the right man or woman for the job! The future looks bright for West Tennessee. Obion county is working on I-69 once again, Gibson county is soon to be home to a state-of-the-art poultry producing plant for the #2 Protein producer in the world. The Hub-City needs to be a part of the supply for the demand for a strong, resilient, and vibrant workforce! Let’s make this the start of the “Roaring Twenties!” Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com)
