MADISON CO. COMMISSIONERS DENY SHERIFF’S REQUEST FOR MORE MONEY March 18, 2019Êwbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn.– During Monday’s County Commission meeting, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office requested an additional $168,000 to fund meals at the prison. Some commissioners understand the additional need. “It’s hard to try to maintain a budget with a business or an organization like the jail,” James Pearson, District 5, said. Others, however, say Sheriff John Mehr has spent too much of taxpayers’ money. “It’s unsustainable right now. Over the past six years, the sheriff’s department’s budget has gone up over $6.5 million,” Jason Compton, District 10, said. 7 24 HOUR

MISSISSIPPI TEENS ACCUSED OF KILLING MOTHERÊSPEAK MARCH 19, 2019, BYÊCBS NEWS WIREÊ MAGNOLIA, Miss. — Family and friends of two teens arrested in the murder of their mother came together over the weekend for prayer. “It was rough.” “Do you wish you could take back what happened?” “Yes.” Fourteen-year-old Amaryionna Hall and her younger sister were arrested and accused of killing their mother Ericka Hall in January 2019. 32-year-old Ericka “What can you tell me about that day?” Hall was found The girls didn’t want to talk on camera about the incident, but were adamant that they were not responsible for their mother’s death. They claimed dead in her yard they were at their aunt’s house at the time. with multiple stab The older sister even stated there was abuse going on in the home. wounds and a “Were you abused?” gunshot wound. “Yes. By my mama.” But the Pike County Sheriff’s Department said they never received any reports of abuse. Pike County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Chris Bell also testified that the girls confessed to planning the killing in advance, faking a knock at the front door to lure Ericka Hall from her bedroom. The 14-year-old told Bell that she stabbed Ericka Hall, then her sister shot her, and the 14-year-old stabbed her again. Her sister later found her in the grass beside her car. ‘We planned it’ is what (the 14-year-old) said,” Bell testified. Ebony Hall, Ericka Hall’s sister, said one of the girls tried to run over their mother in a car on New Year’s Eve, four nights earlier. Ericka Hall called the sheriff’s office that night complaining about “unruly children,” Bell said. Deputy Alex Miller responded, testifying that Ericka Hall didn’t directly tell him about the attempted rundown. Miller said he didn’t call Child Protective Services or file a report, concluding both were unnecessary. Attorney Greg Malta said he’s going to defend the girls on a theory that they used self-defense. Malta suggested Ericka Hall threatened the girls, saying, “I’ve got a gun. I’ve only got two bullets but I only need two bullets.” Ebony Hall said she never heard such a statement and dismissed it as hyperbole. “I think she was just mad,” Ebony Hall said. “She was afraid, too. They tried to run her over.” Malta focused on the questioning of the girls in the early hours of Jan. 5, suggesting neither was capable of giving informed consent to Bell. The investigator testified that the 14-year-old first opened up to her father, Eddie Isaac, before repeating the story to Bell. Isaac, though, denied that after court. “ He talked to them without my consent,” Isaac said. The father said he doesn’t believe the version of events put forward by authorities and Ericka Hall’s relatives. “They’ve got a bunch of stories and a bunch of lies and I just can’t see it happening that way,” Isaac said. 14-year-old Amariyona Hall was Under Mississippi law, children 13 and older accused of certain crimes are automatically charged as adults. Judges can charged with murder as an adult in the later transfer cases to youth court, and Malta said he would probably seek such a transfer. However, District Attorney Dee death of her mother. Bates said he would oppose such a move. “She’s a 14-year-old who committed a capital offense and state law says that she’s an adult,” Bates said. Over the weekend, both girls were released from jail. “I got em. Good lord got em,” said Issac. “I also got them some counseling coming and schooling coming. So everything is going alright so far. They are going through changes but it’s gonna be like that. They are going to be alright.” Amariyonna Hall is awaiting her next court date. She has pleaded not guilty. The 12-year-old’s case is still being handled by youth court. The sheriff’s department is still awaiting autopsy results on Ericka Hall. They could take anywhere from six months to a year.

COMMISSIONERS DENY SHERIFF’S REQUEST Cont’d from page 1 The commission voted 15 to 9 to not provide the funding. “Really, I got up just to make sure that people understood that my ‘no’ vote on this has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with the food for the prisoners, but has everything to do with just the overall budget of the sheriff’s department running over right now,” Compton said. After the meeting, several commissioners asked to speak with their attorney to see what comes next after the vote. “We talked about some of the options that may be available in a situation like that,” Pearson said. Did commissioners take into account if the sheriff will be able to feed the prisoners? “He can find it in his budget,”ÊCompton said. “He’s got money. He moved $200,000 today to cover other items. He can find it.” The sheriff’s office had no comment on the vote.

ELIZA WOOD Jackson Tennessee (08/18/1886)

By Bill Marable

Most nights, you can find Eliza Wood downtown,

POWER PLAY

sitting on the base of our monument to the Confederate Dead, digging into the dirt under the moonlight, excavating

With all the recent verbiage being posted and printed about the Jackson-Madison County School Board and “The Five” one could be lead to believe that the Board of Education is a motley crew operating under the guise of professionalism. I’ll be the first to admit that the Board is causing a few feathers to be ruffled, but such is the nature of that body. School board members are elected to provide oversight for the system and it’s many facets; whether it be budget, property or long range planning. It can’t be easy trying to juggle the desires of the public and private sector especially when all involved are accusing one another of harboring ulterior motives. If one were to look closely at our Madison County Government, you might discover that the School Board isn’t the only entity operating under the cloud of suspicion. The Madison County Commission, under the leadership of Gary Deaton deserves a microscopic view as well. Starting with the $30 million to $60 million renovation of the J. Alex Leach Criminal Justice Complex - or what is most unaffectionately referred to in many circles as “Mad County.” The County Commission sat by and watched as dozens and dozens of nonviolent offenders were taken into custody for misdemeanor crimes every week. Then they flooded the public with hoards of misinformation about overcrowding at the jail. They didn’t stop there. Much to the dismay of many, the Madison County Commission voted (or something like that) to spend millions of dollars on new construction. Speaking of millions of dollars, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department has visited the County Budget feeding trough so many times that the Commissioners were recently forced to turn off the spigot. This leaves many shacking their heads over the obvious inability of Sheriff John Merr to operate the department within a set budget. Former Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork did it for his entire term in office. The latest debacle orchestrated by the County Commission surrounds the placing of a plaque on the Courthouse lawn honoring Madison County lynching victims. In addition to not “wanting to open old wounds” the august body that is the Madison County Commission sat silently as Commissioner Harold Petty and Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris cast aspersions on the lynching of Eliza Woods and the more than 4,000 other documented cases of “White Terrorism” levied against Blacks in the South during the Jim Crow era. They took issue with words written on a plaque, which they view as an indictment against the attitude and intentions of many of the county’s good citizens then and now. They express those sentiments even as one of the most indelible images of oppression for Blacks adorns the lawn of the courthouse in the form of the ‘Johnny Rebel’ statue that greets all who venture into the courthouse or traverse up and down Highland Avenue everyday. The public silence that muffled the desperate pleas of innocence by Eliza Woods, as she faced that mob of more than 1,000 on that inauspicious evening on August 19, 1888 speaking volumes about the apathetic nature of the majority of Madison County citizens back then. The Jackson-Madison County School Board may have it’s issues, but they pale in comparison to the unyielding scepter of power and deception that holds the purse-strings of the county. If the Madison County Commission is careful it could fall prey to it’s own veiled opulence. Peace! BILL MARABLE IS THE PUBLISHER/OWNER OF THE CRIMESEEN EXAMINER NEWS. BMARABLE0@GMAIL.COM

for a relic of justice.Ê Speak her name, she’ll raise her head, scan the horizon that swallows your voice with echoes of curses, rebel yells, shotgun blasts that leave exit wounds in the sky.Ê Sheriff Person could not protect you, Eliza. White men with torches, blood lust in their eyes ripped the clothes off your back and drove you from a jail cell into the August night.Ê The carnival had come to town:Ê White kids cartwheeled the stars, white women jostled babies on hips and reminisced about the last time, their men slobbered a flask between them and music square danced from HC Bryant’s Hardware.Ê Did you recognize the faces, Eliza—black faces made to assemble and bow to a history of degradation and fear, lessons taught from a crumbled Constitution in the hands of Jim Crow?Ê Forced to confess poisoning Mrs. Jesse, you spoke silence, would not be the last to be slapped, spat upon, driven from one judgment place to another.Ê Your sex would not save you.Ê The color of blackness unforgiveable.Ê Your flesh bruised along cobblestones, scrapped raw on Jackson streets, strangled in a noose and nailed to a tree where gunshots found your body. The mob roared.Ê The night sighed. In the morning, makeshift grave clothes entombed you. Shafts of sunlight filtered your remains, cast shadows on a silver crucifix, trampled in the broken earth. Is your debris trash being picked up ? The CrimeSEEN Examiner News was recently contacted by several citizens in east Jackson regarding their concerns with debris and trash stopping up their storm drain inlets causing water flow to be obstructed. The citizens reported they had contacted the City of Jackson Public Works Department and after over a month still had not received any results.Ê In efforts to be of service we went into the Idlewild, Cloverdale, Holland, Cartmell and Phillips Streets to investigate their complaints. Upon arriving around the first of February we noticed one drain inlet at 55 Cloverdale had fell into the drain leaving an open area which could be hazardous or someone could have fallen into.Ê Several drains in the entire area were full of debris and trash causing obstructions to water drain off and ultimately causing water to back up especially after a hard rains we experienced this season. This problem went unsolved for at least over a month that we know of. We later contacted the City Engineers Office and almost the next day the problem was addressed and the hazardous drain was repaired and inlets were cleaned in the entire area. Citizens do deserve and expect basic services and areas to be fixed which are not safe to people.Ê While our appreciation to Scott Chandler and the city engineers office this problem of debris removal and drain cleaning should not have went over a month without attention.Ê The citizens have an opportunity to vote and elect a new Mayor and City Council members May 7 election.Ê It may be the duty of citizens to vote and elect their representatives who will respond to their concerns and complaints in their districts.Ê Basic city services and responding back to people on a timely basis is the key to building trust credibility within an organization. Taxpayers deserve no less than timely courteous and professional services from their City Governments. What’s your opinion or experiences with lic government public services?Ê We welcome your input letters and or suggestions on how City I’d Jackson has responded to your calls? “As always, we are at your service.” Dtrb

COUNCILMAN BROOKS HOSTS NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING

Jackson, TN – On Thursday, March 7, 2019, Four-term Jackson City Councilman, Ernest Brooks II, District Three, hosted a Neighborhood Watch Meeting for the neighborhood surrounding Campbell Street – Vega, Alta Vista, Timberlake, Siesta, Hillary, Blake, Parmara, Belle Haven and others.Ê The meeting, held at Campbell Street Church of Christ, was in response to concerns raised by many of the neighbors including crime, speeding, trash pickup, code violations, group homes and animals. “As opposed to addressing their concerns individually, I decided to invite the appropriate City of Jackson department heads to address their issues in person.Ê Additionally, it had been some time since their last Neighborhood Watch meeting”, said Brooks. Participating departments were Health and Sanitation, Engineering, Code Enforcement, Animal Control, the Mayor’s Office and Administration and Patrol Officers from the Jackson Police Department. According to Neighborhood Organizer, Tamarin Huelin, “I would like to thank Councilman Brooks for inviting so many representatives from the city to listen to our concerns and answer our questions.Ê It shows that he really cares about the neighborhoods in his district”. The neighbors have planned to reinvigorate the Watch by meeting in the Fall and participating in Neighborhood Night Out this year.

Monday, March 18, 2019 |Ê02:19pm NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced $14.8 million in broadband accessibility grants that will expand broadband service to more than 8,300 households and businesses in 17 counties across Tennessee. “I am pleased to announce that we are getting our rural areas up to speed and expanding broadband in the areas that need it most,” said Lee. “I am committed to ensuring connectivity in every corner of our state as broadband impacts our goals for health care, education, economic development and beyond.” According to the FCC’s 2018 Broadband Deployment Report, nearly one in four rural Tennesseans lack access to broadband. In addition to the $20 million included in Gov. Lee’s recommended budget for fiscal year 2020, these grants will continue to close the access gap ensuring rural Tennesseans have the tools needed for growth and prosperity. The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) is working with the 13 grantees who demonstrated a high need for grant funding. Recipients also demonstrated the ability to implement and sustain the project long-term with strong community support. “Broadband is critical to the sustained economic success of a community,” said TNECD Commissioner Bob Rolfe. “By expanding broadband accessibility, we are extending the runway of possibilities for new industry and development right here in Tennessee.” Grantees will provide $20 million in matching funds for a combined investment of nearly $35 million across the state for the second year of funding. Infrastructure should be built out within two years of receiving the grant funds. Among the recipients is include:• Gibson Electric Membership Corporation: $588,974 serving the Gadsden Community in Crockett County and part of Gibson County.
