FISHING + PATIENCE = SUCCESS
Thursday, 04-11-2019
West Tennessee OUTDOORS
The greatestÊtool of any outdoorsman is not in the with Ray Jones tackle box but rather in the SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO mind. numberonecoach@hotmail.com Patience is by far the trait or 731-694-8614. that gives great fishermen the edge that equals success on the lake. You’ve planned all week long and it is a perfect weather day to fish and you get there and don’t even get a bite. What started out as a relaxing fishing trip has now turned frustrating and getting stressful. It gets to a point where you have to decide if you will fish just a little while longer or fold up the operation. You get the picture, its not fun anymore and you’re not happy. I remember once I fished all around a large lake and only caught a few fish but the elderly lady sitting on the bank had a large bucket full and she never left her spot. She was patient, relaxed and having a great day of fishing while I stressed my way around the lake. My problem was that I didn’t realize I had missed the main reason for being out there which was for a relaxing fishing trip. I had that and didn’t even realize it. The next time you go fishing take the kids and make sure they know that anytime you are out in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee fishing you are always successful if you just be patient. One more cast and you might catch the trophy of a lifetime.

When they arrived they found Brodes Perry, executive pastor at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, and his wife suffering from gunshot wounds. Authorities said the shooter, Latoshia Daniels, was still armed and refused to put down the gun. The female victim told police Daniels showed up at her home unexpectedly the night of the shooting. Having known her from her time Pastor Brodes Perry living in Little Rock, sheÊ agreed to let her inside the home. She was escorting Daniels back out when the suspect pulled a handgun and started shooting, screaming “You broke my heart” at the husband, according to a court affidavit. A police report says his wife knelt by him and Daniels told her to get out of the way, then shot her in the left shoulder. Perry’s wife told police she didn’t know of any affair taking place between the two but Daniels actions made that seem to be a possibility. Both victims were taken to the Regional Medical Center where Brodes Perry later died. While at the hospital, police said Daniels also attacked an officer. Police said the officer was trying to take her into custody and that’s when she jerked away and shoved him before taking off running. Officers said they had to force her to the ground before they could get her handcuffed. Daniels was charged with first degree murder, attempt first degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

A Matter of Opinion . . . OPEN LETTER TO STATE SENATOR ED JACKSON Bill to recall politicians Mr. (Ed) Jackson, I am a resident o fMadison County and understand that you have introduced a bill to recall politicians if constituents become unsatisfied. This local issue that some are very concerned about because they have coceome unhappy with Mr. (Morris) Merriweather is just that . . . a local issue. The remedy to removing a politician is to vote them out. I am very distrubed that your decision to become involved and prematurely attempt to remove an elected official is now being discussed in Nashville. As a local resident I am asking that you forego the plan to take away the rights of voters and allow our process of electing officials (to) remain as is. Voters should be allowed to vote and politicians should be allowed to serve their terms. Thank you for listening.

South Jackson’s First Annual “Family Day” At Malesus Park Over 300 friends, neighbors and local candidates gathered Saturday at Malesus Park for what’s been labeled a tremendous success. Organized by Southside business owner Delinda Mitchell And Denise And Darryl Lewis of Lewis Bail Bonding Services as the start of an annual event. With music by entertainer Steve Patterson, food by Josh Wadley of Exit 87 Bar B Q face painting, Easter egg hunting with sponsorship of local business, over 300 people came together for a great day of fellowship. People in South Jackson have long felt left out of the mainstream of City of Jackson they’ve organized along with Dr John Michael Briley’s medical clinic to regain their sense of community and stepping forward to be included as part of Jackson.Ê Organizer Delinda Mitchell said “for over 30 years since being incorporated into the City of Jackson we’ve been treated like the red header freckle face step child of the City” that got slapped away from the table.” “No more,” says Mitchell. “We continue to sponsor community events and are making known to political candidates that we are tired of vague empty promises that have not been fulfilled.” Over 8 years we’ve not seen sidewalks curbs gutters or street repairs in South Jackson” It’s time for our new elect to be city councilman Gary Pickens and mayoral candidates to show the respect and attention to south Jackson. The free ride is over” says Mitchell. “We will continue to organize plan and execute plans to be included in street repairs development and progress the citizens of South Jackson deserve, we’ve paid city taxes since 1977 and it’s way overdue to be included in the growth and development of our city,” added Mitchell. “As of today, Mayoral candidate Jimmy Eldridge and city council candidate Gary Pickens are the only candidates to reach out to South Jackson and commit to making us included in his plans if elected Mayor.”

“WHY I’M VOTING FOR DR. WOODS” By Greg D. Hammond These are exciting times in Jackson and Madison County. After adding new leadership and fresh representation on the school board and county commission, Jackson residents are now poised to install new management in the mayor’s office. Registered voters have less than two months to study the issues and the candidates to determine which of the five declared applicants will provide the best way forward for our city. Each job seeker deserves our thoughtful consideration. Our next mayor must be willing and able to represent every corner of our diverse city; not simply in word, but in action. Our next mayor needs to be visionary and willing to make decisions that benefit the entire community; not just a select few. Our next mayor needs to be both personable, and experienced with large budgets. Our next mayor needs to be an advocate for our public schools system, not simply because it’s financially and politically expedient, but rather because he understands the weight of his office and the invaluable worth of community.
That’s a lot to ask of a private citizen, but not a public servant. Expectations should be communicated by the voters. Goals and benchmarks need to be communicated and set by the candidates. There are five candidates, but only two hurdles stand in the way of Jackson’s progress: The unwillingness of young people and minorities to engage in local politics, and the reluctance of party hardliners to look outside their label for leadership. Jackson’s future will depend on the people’s will for progress. We have access to the ballot box. Will we use it? That is the most exciting question of all.
While a favorable case can be made for either of the candidates, I’m of the opinion that the most favorable choice for our city is clear. Dr. Jerry Woods is the only candidate that has served as the most senior member of a government organization. After more than 30 years of service in public education, Dr. Woods has been a successful school superintendent in three different cities and two different states. He’s supervised multiple departments and multi-million dollar budgets. He understands people and he understands government. His posts in Clinton and Covington Tennessee, and Forrest City, Arkansas, did not end his connection and influence in Jackson.
Dr. Woods has been a mentor and actively involved in a number of civic and service organizations right here in Madison County. A Lambuth graduate who formerly served in administration at Lane College, Dr. Woods has been a uniter in a town that has struggled with division. Dr. Woods is the right man for the moment. He has the experience and the vision to take Jackson to the next level. In fact, I challenge you to compare Dr. Woods to the other candidates. Take away the photos. Take away the names. Just read each resume side by side. Read their accomplishments and then read what they plan to do for Jackson as mayor. I encourage you to research the candidates and ask questions. Our future deserves your thoughtful consideration. Read his bio here https://www.woodsformayor.net/about-jerry For additional information about Dr. Jerry Woods and his platform, check out https://www.woodsformayor.net/
Dr. Woods has hosted several community forums over the last few months.

Henderson, Tennessee (April 9, 2019)—NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. will speak at Freed-Hardeman University’s annual benefit dinner Friday night, Dec. 6, 2019. The annual event raises funds for FHU scholarships. Earnhardt is a thirdgeneration driver in the firstfamily of NASCAR racing. While his innate ability behind the wheel comes from his Earnhardt DNA, his competitive driving style and business savvy are all his own. His common-sense charisma and flair for originality have made him one of the most popular figures in sports. Race fans have selected him a record 14 consecutive times as NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver. His appeal, however, is not limited to race fans, as Earnhardt has appeared on Harris Interactive’s annual survey of America’s Top 10 Favorite Athletes. Freed-Hardeman constituents were invited to participate in a survey to select the 2019 benefit dinner speaker, according to Dave Clouse, vice president for community engagement. Earnhardt was a top response from those participating. “The amazing popularity of NASCAR and this evidence that a large part of the FHU family is interested in hearing him led to our decision to invite him to speak,” Clouse said. “Of course, with all of the attention currently being given to athletes’ concussion injuries, his unfortunate concussion history made his selection timely.” FHU’s annual benefit dinner is typically the state’s largest single-night fundraiser. For the past 19 years, it has generated more than $1 million annually to help students attend FHU. Forever Communications is the premier media sponsor for the event. Other sponsorships begin at $600. To learn more about purchasing tickets or becoming a sponsor, one may go to fhu.edu/dalejr. General admission tickets are currently on sale.
