I have seen some big crappie in my time but this one takes the cake. Pat Holmes did it again and this time no one with Ray Jones SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO can dispute it. numberonecoach@hotmail.com I don’t mind admitting that or 731-694-8614. he is a friend of mine and submits photos of fish quite often. But this time anyone would be impressed with the size of this monster crappie. Minnows are his choice of bait and apparently the trophy crappie likes them too. All I can say is what my late friend Kid Jones said to me one time,” Whatever those fish think that bait is I know you hope they keep thinking it”. That’s about all I can say for Pat and those minnows because this is not the only one he has caught it is just the one that made the paper. He did not weigh the crappie but we both agree that it must be between 3 to 4 lbs. I’m not sure at this time what the state record is but this one has to be one of the largest in West Tennessee. This should get you fired up to head out to the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee and get after those monster crappies. I know it did me. PHOTO IS PAT HOLMES AND A TROPHY CRAPPIE.

In the video from which this image was captured, he extolled the importance of economic independence in achieving racial equality. John McFerren, a key civil rights warrior in Fayette County, Tenn. during the 1960s died from natural causes April 4. His death occurred on the 52nd commemoration of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. McFerren was born in Somerville, the Fayette County seat, on Oct. 28, 1924, to Eugene and Estella McFerren, the fifth of six children. In the summer of 1959, McFerren decided to commit his life to equality and racial justice. After attending the trial of Burton Dodson, an African-American accused of killing a white deputy in a 1940 shootout, McFerren started a voter registration drive.

HUMPHREYS COUNTY MAN ACCUSED OF ALLOWING DOG TO RAPE WOMAN A Humphreys County sex offender is accused of tying a woman up and allowing a dog to rape her. Warrant information says on April 5th,Ê that Gary W. King (right), tied and bound a woman, against her will, naked to a wooden stand. King then reportedly encouraged a dog to “mount “ and rape her. The victim said King video taped the alleged rape. Court documents says that deputies found the items the woman described and other physical evidence during a search of the residence. Earlier today after a search and a lengthy surveillance, King was taken into custody by members of the Humphreys County Sheriffs Office. King is currently charged with Rape and Sexual Activity with Animals. Humphreys Count Sheriff Chris Davis says that his office will seek more charges againt King. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation King is a registered sex offender. That database says he was previously convicted of a charge of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. King is being held at the Humphreys County Detention Facility in lieu of $125,000 bond. The dog has been placed with the Humane Society. Note to my readers, this case is even more disgusting than what your reading. I have omitted anything that might identify this poor woman.

Heroes are not hard to find! There are certainly a lot of things to get distraught about during this time of uncertainty. But let us take a moment to focus on who the true heroes are that are all around us in our community! Take a moment to see how your teachers and those in education are working diligently to provide for the needs of students during this shutdown. As we are told to shelter at home which for most of us is certainly an inconvenience; let us pause and consider that the teachers are placing themselves at risk to serve their community. Let us go a step further and consider those in the healthcare industry that are on the front lines of this healthcare crisis. They are not just doing their job they truly care about those that they serve. Let us consider those that are working in “essential” jobs in order to provide the goods and services that we need in order toÊmake our situation as comfortable as possible. In my last article, I thanked the leadership for their unenviable task of informing the community on the most recent developments and making the tough decisions to benefit the most people and do the most good. “We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.” ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow LET US BE GRATEFUL, HOPEFUL, AND CONSIDERATE! Education is not just about what’s in the books. It’s about teaching character, it’s about teaching community, and it’s about teaching respect. Parents this is an ideal time to reinforce social emotional skills while working with your children during this shutdown. Time is an asset that cannot be recycled so let us take full advantage of our situation. Remote learning is not online learning and keep in mind teachers did not get any advance notice of the impact of this pandemic either. When I graduated high school many yearsÊago,Êwe utilized music to inspire, uplift our spirits, and encourage usÊto look forward to tomorrow! May I suggest “Shine” by LOLO or perhaps “Feel It” by Margie Chadburn. You can find both on YouTube if you prefer to watch the video. STUDENTS AN OUTBREAK IS NOT A SPRING BREAK! I know that HS seniors were focusing on Senior Prom and graduation or perhaps what direction their career path would lead. I urge you to take advantage of this time to reflect and reset. If you are behind, catch up. If you are caught up then place yourself ahead of your competition! Now is the time to do that. Use your time wisely! This is a historic time you are living in right now so don’t miss out on the lessons it will teach us for the future. We are all in this moment together and we will get through it together. We need you to learn how to help us overcome the challenges yet to come once the pandemic has passed!Ê DON POLLEY Education contributorÊ (Contact don@donpolley.com)

What does the COVID-19 and the Prison Population mean during this Pandemic?

p. 07

CHATTING

Social distancing is impossible in Jails and Prisons. In fact, in many facilities, hand sanitizers are considered as a contraband due to its high alcohol content. Many people who are incarcerated also have chronic conditions, like diabetes, asthema and other underling conditions that can make them more vulunable to severe forms of the COVID-19. That means that 2.3 million people behind bars are at serious risk or dying from the COVID-19. On March 26, 2020, Attorney General William Barr issued a memorandum to BOP Director Michael Carvajal directing him to prioritize the use of BOP’s various statutory authorities to grant home confinement for inmates seeking transfer in connection with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In the memorandum, the Attorney General notes that there are some at-risk prisoners who are incarcerated for nonviolent crimes, pose a minimal risk of recidivism, and might be safer serving their sentence on home confinement rather than in a BOP facility. Across the United States there has been an outbreak of the COVID-19 in the prison population. People regularly cycle in and out of jails and prisons, people who work in them leave and return daily. There have been hundreds of cases confirmed along with staff members affected by the COVID_19 in these facilities. Please be informed and stay involved. DATA SHOWS COVID-19’S IMPACT ON THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY April 13, 2020 Brittany Kyles -wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — “That’s what the NAACP has been fighting for over a 110 years,” Jackson-Madison County NAACP president, Harrell Carter said. Over 20,000 people have died from coronavirus, and there’s new numbers surfacing everyday. In many states there’s an ongoing trend: Data shows African-Americans are being impacted more than other races. As of Monday, there are 76 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County. 56 percent of those cases are African-Americans. West Tennessee Healthcare chief physician executive, Dr. Jackie Taylor says this is believed to be due to underlying health conditions within the African-American community. “We know in the African-American community that diabetes is twice as high as in white people, and hypertension is 40 percent higher,” Taylor said. The health conditions have put more people of color at risk to contract coronavirus and have serious health complications from it. “People of color are more likely to live in densely packed areas and in multi-generational housing situations, which creates higher risk for spread of a highly contagious disease like COVID-19,” U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Jerome Adams said. Carter says these results are not surprising. “With a pandemic like this, we understood that it would hit those of the least first,” Carter said. ‘The lack of access to quality healthcare has already been an issue,” Carter said. “The chronic burden of medical bills is likely to make people of color especially less resilient to the ravages of COVID-19,” Adams said. “There’s also higher rates of obesity and asthma, so that would put them at higher risk,” Dr. Jackie Adams said. According to health departments in other states like Mississippi, 67 percent of African-Americans have died from the virus,Ê57 percent in Alabama and 46 percent in South Carolina.

Americans are starting to receive -via direct deposittheir first stimulus checks from the United States Treasury Department sent to help alleviate the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We can confirm that payments are beginning to arrive in some citizens accounts,” a senior Treasury Department official confirmed to ABC News last week. The Treasury and the IRS (Internal Revenue Service} have worked around the clock to get direct economic assistance to hardworking Americans. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis it took the government several months before the first stimulus checks were issued to people, this time the government has gotten the first round of checks out in just two weeks according to the Treasury Department. Treasury officials are working to automatically process payments for social security and help retirement recipients who did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019 according to a statement from the US Treasury. “Millions more economic impact payment will be issued via direct deposit in the weeks ahead as we issue payments to social security recipients and as other taxpayers provide banking information on the tools provided. We are working to secure the fast and efficient delivery of payments to veterans, disabled and other vulnerable people ASAP.” Treasury Officials also states the first payments who received 2018, 2019 tax returns via direct deposit, will be going out no later than April 15. Those who have not filed taxes are being directed to go to IRS.gov to enter their information so they can get their economic impact payments faster by direct deposit. There is no commitment from the Treasury at this time regarding people who are waiting on paper checks, which may take a little longer to disburse. The government also said it will launch a new app next week called “Get My Payment” to expedite the delivery of funds for tax filers who did not receive their refund electronically. The stimulus checks are part of a massive $2 trillion stimulus package to provide essential relief to Americans workers and an economy reeling from the Coronavirus crisis.

Church Security Service Changes CSE partner “Downtown Ricky Brown” sharing fellowship with Jarvis Lewis, who serves with his church security team in Jackson. Brown has worked church and special event security most of his career and as religious church services have moved to “online and social media” services!Ê As the CDC and official requirements are not to meet anymore than 10 people most churches have opted to have their services online social media. Brown and Lewis indicated however security of churches is still a priority and even with limited people inside churches, parking lot safety and prevention is still the key to preventing crimes” Being ever vigilant in assuring your safety is the priority of church security.Ê During this time of stay at home work, church worship continues with people worshipping at home with family online.

SURVIVING COVID-19 By Duane Fair Special to CSE News April 9, 2020 Good morning everyone! Hoping that all is well with you all. I just want to thank each and every one of you who have been praying for me as I deal with this COVID19. Thanks for all of the calls, text messages and Facebook posts! God is truly an awesome God! He is a healer! I have been home since Tuesday night, still with some shortness of breath and a little weakness, and still taking the antibiotics. But since I was able to keep my oxygen level up on my own, there was no reason for me to stay in the hospital any longer. The bed was needed for those that are still require oxygen, and those that are more critical and are on a ventilator. Here is a brief rundown from when I first started having symptoms. I felt some mild cold like symptoms on my way to work on 3/25. They were so mild that I barely noticed them. On my way home that night, the symptoms grew a bit (felt like I had a mild fever, chills, a little lightheaded and light cough) I slept in a hooded sweatshirt that night (I never sleep in a shirt) I woke that Thursday morning with flu like symptoms. I called the doctor and was told to self-quarantine. By Saturday the fever went higher (101) and I was losing my appetite. That Monday (3/30) I

made an appointment with one of the doctors in my doctor’s office. He thought I had pneumonia and prescribed some antibiotic. By Wednesday (4/1), symptoms were getting worse; Tylenol was no longer keeping it down and it had shot up to over 102. I could not smell anything and started feeling some shortness of breath. Had an appointment with my doctor on Thursday 4/2, who told me to go to the ER. I called 911 since I couldn’t drive due to the uncontrollable coughing caused by the shortness of breath. I walked out to meet the paramedics, and the shortness of breath was uncontrollable. They gave me oxygen which was an immediate relief. Once at the ER, they ran test, swabbed me for the flu and did a chest xray and continued with the oxygen. No flu, so at first the doctor wanted to send me home. I said WHY?? And reminded him of my shortness of breath and the fact that the chest xray results were ‘concerning’ according to the other doctor. He left and they moved me to an isolated room in ER. The nurse told me that they were going to admit me and she swabbed me for COVID-19. I was moved to a room on the 4th floor that had 4 beds, but I was the only one. They constantly checked vitals, did an EKG and

Duane Fair. the oldest son of Morris and Brinda Fair, Sr., grew up on the west side of Humboldt, where e attended Stigall Elementary School. He was an active member of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church. His family relocated to Jackson where he eventually graduated from North Side High school, where he was active in football, basketball and band. He then went on to attend and graduate from Tennessee State University. Duane currently resides in Chicago, IL, where he works as an Operations Supervisor. He has been active member of Christian Tabernacle Church of Roselle for the last 26 years, where he leads the Audio/Visual Ministry. swabbed me again on Friday (4/3) -they realized a quicker way to get results. Late Saturday (4/3) I was told I was positive for COVID-19. Later that night they moved three more men

into the same room -all of whom had also tested positive. They were keeping me isolated while my status was ‘unknown.’ They also changed my treatment once I was known to be positive.

By Monday (4/5), the fever was gone. The shortness of breath was not quite as severe. They did another chest x-ray. The doctor said my lungs looked a lot better. The nurse (I had the same nurse from Saturday night until Tuesday) listened to my lungs thru the stethoscope and was shocked at how much clearer my lungs were from Saturday. The doctor came and tested my oxygen level while walking, and I was able to maintain a level over 95 mm hg. (I had stopped using oxygen by Saturday in attempts to build my oxygen level up) He then said that I might be getting out very soon. They did do an EKG that evening. Tuesday (4/5) the doctor came in that morning and told me he was releasing me!!! All vitals were stable and the oxygen level remained high, plus I had no fever for the last couple of days. I did not wanna risk

anyone picking me up, so I had to wait several hours for an isolated ambulance to take me home. So now I have to stay quarantined at home for 14 more days, after which I will see the doctor. I also follow up with my PCP in one week. At no point throughout this ordeal did I allow fear and anxiety to enter my mind.I knew through the blood of Christ that I was going to defeat this!Ê I constantly prayed for the other men in my room, as well as for the medical staff, especially the nurses. Those nurses were (and still are) putting themselves at risk going in and out of rooms, having to work in hot PPE . But they still maintained their professionalism and provided great care. We need to be very grateful for them!!! Once again, thank you all for your continued prays, calls, text and everything else! Stay safe and STAY AT HOME!
