MONSTER CRAPPIE

West Tennessee OUTDOORS

With the coronavirus taking center stage in everyone’s life it is important that we take with Ray Jones time to get our minds off of it SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO for stress relief. numberonecoach@hotmail.com Many anglers are taking or 731-694-8614. advantage of social distancing by spending more time away from people and in the outdoors. As I took my routine excursion around town I noticed signs on a lot of businesses and others had the doors looked and would not allow any costumers inside. However, there are no signs on lakes and rivers which tells me where the safe space is. A photo was sent to me of a huge crappie caught from the Tennessee river recently. The crappie was said to have been close to the banks which indicates they are spawning. If ever there was a time to head to the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee the time is now. Kids and adults are cramped and need some relief from the social distancing and there is plenty of space on the creeks.Ê You can enjoy a ray of sunshine without risk and relieve stress at the same time. PHOTO IS A HUGE CRAPPIE CAUGHT ON THE TENNESSEE RIVER.

$TIMULUS RELIEF TO BE DEPOSITED CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 After hours of reading through the 880-page bill and talking with lawmakers in the know, like Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Memphis) WREG discovered a number of things that should answer those questions. The formula is all based upon your most recent tax return. If you’re married and together make less than $150,000, you and your spouse would getÊ up to $2,400. The checks get smaller as the income gets larger. Anyone who’s single and making less than $75,000 gets a check for $1,200.ÊÊ Again, those who make more get less. “It’s my understanding those checks of $1,200 per person for people with incomes under $75,000 a year, $2,400 for a couple and an additional $500 per child will start being direct deposited this week,” Rep. Cohen said. Additionally, there’s a big windfall set aside for people who’ve been laid off. They’ll continue getting their unemployment checks from the state along with an additional $600 per week for the next four months. If you don’t use direct deposit for your tax return, you’ll get a check in the mail, but it could take weeks. Many parents with children aged 16 and younger could also see additional relief. But again, there are income restrictions.

CHAPMAN The United States of America has the highest Incarceration rate in the world. There are nearly 2.3 million people that are serving time in a State and Federal Prisons, local jails, Juvenile detention centers, Military- and Indian prison facilities. In fact, there are around 6,843 facilities around the US today. In 2019, President Donald Trump signed into law the first Step Act, which was pushed by one of our very own Jacksonians “Van Jones”. Van Jones is the CEO of the Reform and co-founder of #Cut50 which is a bipartisan coalition that are dedicated to ending mass incarceration. With the help of leaders such as Van Jones, Kim Kardashian, Jay Z, they were able to come together and pass the First Step Act that ultimately released over 7,000 Federal Prisoners. Across the United States, the fight for criminal Justice Reform and the end of mass incarceration is still on the rise. In fact, did you know that there are 46 % of the prison population are incarcerated due to a drug conviction? If you think about it, if we found a way to tackle the war on drugs, the prison population would go down significantly. Mass incarceration is not just a state nor federal prison problem but, Mass Incarceration is everyone’s problem. Too many families have lost their loved ones and been abandoned. Mass Incarceration must end. No one should have to serve more than (15) years in Prison. CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 There are many that are By ‘Downtown’ Rickey Brown incarcerated with existing rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com health conditions that makes them especially vulnerable. According to local officials the jail is presently over-crowded, and in our opinion present the opportunity for a major susceptibility to an outbreak. The NAACP has long held the opinion that the majority of the local “Criminal Justice Complex” inmates are mentally challenged or too poor to make bail. “We could release over half of the inmates in the CJC today if we had an “humane local criminal justice system,” said Harrell Carter, President of the NAACP Branch. “We have plenty of space to lock-up those that needs to be kept from the general population, but what we are doing to the mentally ill, those that are in poverty and substance abusers of drugs and alcohol, underscores the severity and complexity of a community who has yet to find a desire to adequately address mental health, reduce poverty, racism and the stigmatization of communities of color.” For More Information Contact: Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch Office, 118 North Church Street, Jackson, TN 38301 - (731) 927.7004 Office, (731) 927.7003 Fax, (731.616.7749 cell) or jmcnaacp@att.net,

Estate of JOHN ANDERSON MEEKS, JR., Deceased

We are dealing with a serious pandemic. It’s not about how you may personally be infected by COVID-19. Think about it this way: if 1% of our population gets sick enough to be hospitalized, it will overrun our hospital and healthcare system. This is not just the flu 2.0. Our hospitals can deal with the flu. What they can’t deal with is COVID-19 in addition to the flu and everything else. Be smart. Be cautious. Treat everyone like they have it, including yourself.

Notice is hereby given that on March 17 of 2020 Letters Testamentary (or of Administration as the case may be) in respect of the estate of JOHN ANDERSON MEEKS, JR., who died August 21, 2019, were issued to the undersigned by the Probate Court of Madison County, Tennessee. Communication-Knowledge-Change! On the second Monday of this month I was in Nashville Tennessee attending the Early Literacy Summit along with educators all throughout the state. I was excited as JMCSS was represented well by Dr. Jared Myracle, who was leading a breakout session on curriculum. The information that was presented at the meeting was very positive as Governor Bill Lee reiterated his support for education in his proposed budget and the chairpersons for both legislative houses were on hand for a panel discussion with SCORE. The meeting was very inspirational as it appeared that literacy was going to be addressed in Tennessee. This was endorsed by Dr. Penny Schwinn, the Commissioner of Education in Tennessee. The theme was that if we know better, we must do better as there is an urgency for literacy in Tennessee.

WHAT A WEEK! Monday in Nashville where there were banners welcoming the SEC Tournament to Nashville as the hospitality industry was looking for a windfall from tourism. I substitute taught middle school students in ELA on Tuesday in Gibson County. Wednesday I was subbing for Math in a different middle school as the Gibson County girls did a walk through with all the students in the hallways cheering them on to Murfreesboro to play for the state championship. Thursday, I attended the Annual Celebration for the Jackson Chamber at the Grant Center at Union University. Instead of handshakes, smiles and stories of success and networking; there were fist bumps and elbow taps. Despite the wonderful music of LOLO and recognition to business and non-profits for their positive contributions to the community; there were clearly other concerns on the minds of business leaders that had gathered. I subbed at the same middle school on Friday that I had on Wednesday but this time for the ELA teacher. Once the state championship game had been cancelled the coronavirus had become more of a reality for students.

Proactive Measures-Meeting Immediate Needs I hope my editor allows me to follow this article up with a companion piece next week with more details. For now, parents I urge you to utilize this precious gift of time to spend with your children and learn how to learn along with them. I can speak from my personal experience in working with my grandchildren that remote learning is not online learning. Be patient and be kind as teachers were not given any notice on these current changes as we all must work together to learn as we go. Use the library as a valuable resource and download the JMCSS app for your mobile device or tablet to keep you up to date on what is going on.
