Biden thanks Pearson, Tennessee 3 for ‘standing up’
by: Associated Press
Posted: Apr 24, 2023 / 03:33 PM CDT
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Monday thanked three Tennessee lawmakers for “standing up” after they faced expulsion for participating in gun control protests at their statehouse.
“You’re standing up for our kids, you’re standing up for our communities,” Biden told Rep. Justin Pearson, Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Gloria Johnson during an Oval Office meeting.
Pearson, a first-term state representative from Memphis, recently reappointed to his seat by the Shelby County Commission following his ouster by state Republicans.
Flanked by Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden described the expulsion votes as “shocking” and “undemocratic.”
“Nothing is guaranteed about our democracy — every generation has to fight for it,” he said.
The episode has turned the lawmakers, known as the “Tennessee three,” into Democratic heroes. Harris already visited Nashville earlier this month to show her support.
The statehouse protest took place days after the shooting at the Covenant School, a private Christian school where three children and three adults were killed. The three lawmakers — Rep. Justin Pearson, Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Gloria Johnson — approached the front of the House chamber with a bullhorn as protesters filled the galleries.
The Republicans who control the Tennessee legislature called for their expulsion because they disrupted House proceedings. Pearson and Jones, both Black, were expelled, while Johnson was not.
Pearson and Jones were later reinstated on an interim basis by local officials, and they plan to run in a special election to finish their terms.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said last week that Biden was “proud” and “appreciative” to see the three state representatives calling for stronger gun restrictions, particularly a ban on so-called assault weapons.
GOP leader, who voted to expel TN Three
Cont’d from page 1
Until now, Campbell, who served as vice chair of the House Republican Caucus and who recently voted to expel three Democrats who engaged in a gun violence protest on the House floor, had suffered no previous consequences as a result of his actions.
Despite accusations of sometimes extremely vulgar comments and other inappropriate advances, Republicans did not remove the 39-year-old East Tennessee lawmaker from his leadership position
nor from his committee assignments.
But taxpayers are paying for his actions.
NewsChannel 5 has learned that potentially thousands of dollars have been spent to protect one victim, relocating her from the downtown apartment building where she and Campbell both had apartments, shipping her furniture back home in another part of the state and placing her in a downtown hotel for the remainder of her internship.

It’s a Crime to Be Unhealthy!
By Susan Holloway, M.S. Home Economics Child Development-Family Relations, Retired Teacher of JMCSS and Madison County Extension
This may be the last month to remind you of my introduction in my January 2023 article. “We all know this year might bring many challenges that affect our personal health or our financial health. I am confirmed to choose an unusual new year’s resolution this year. I resolve to stop being WASTEFUL in every part of my life. Abundance and then just habit can cause us to be wasteful and we do not even realize it. The less resources wasted the more money, the less resources wasted the more time, the less resources wasted the more prepared I can be for potential times of need, the less resources wasted the more I am proud of the resources I DO have. I plan to touch on several areas where I notice we are wasteful, these being (1) food (2) time (3) paper products and (4) fuels. I will address each of the four areas in my monthly articles January through April 2023.”
My April article is #4 FUELS. What a time to discuss how to reduce usages of gasoline, diesel, electricity, propane, biofuels, coal, wood, solar, etc. All their costs seemed to increase just recently, and the cost is something we cannot control. It is the usage of the fuels that we can control. Question is, “Why do we even bother to conserve energy anyway?” Saving fuels used for energy will always save us money, increase the value of property whether it be home or vehicle, and protect the environment. We are always seeking ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels (petroleum oil, coal, natural gas) and many times purchasing solar panels to store in solar batteries or even heat pumps.
I want to openly thank Mother Liberty CME Church. I grew up as a Pastor’s daughter, musician, vocalist and directing choirs in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. As a child, I traveled many states playing and singing in the CME Church.
In March 2021, Dr. Carmichael Dale Crutchfield, Rev. Pat Winston and Rev. Freda Hall-Crutchfield and the entire Mother Liberty CME Church brought me back to my Mecca. The three beautiful souls you see in the photo are a blessing to people and the entire community.
I have thoroughly enjoyed and been blessed serving as their Music Director. The entire church has continued to stay by my side through my illness. I will be forever grateful for their continued love and support. I love you Mother Liberty! I am working to come back stronger.
~ Heating and cooling costs are half our expenses for utilities and can be reduced greatly by using a smart thermostat for conservative settings when we are not at home. Thick insulation and upgraded heaters and AC units will reduce the use of energy too.
~ Choose clothing for any season which requires comfort to be enjoyed with less use of energy.
~ Never leave any space where outside air can come in or inside air can go out. Seal the air spaces for big savings too.
~ The U. S. Department of Energy states unplugging unused devices everywhere in the home will save 5-10% of the electricity part of our bill. Every little bit adds up to big savings. This may be over $100 per year.
~ All LED bulbs of the lowest possible wattages will be a savings too, but natural light is even better.
~ Make sure the air filters in all systems are clean - the recommendations are to change them every 2- 3 month.
~ Hot water heaters, whether electric or gas, are users of large amounts of energy. Washing clothes in cold water
is helpful.
~ The clothes dryer is less costly when using Air Dry or Auto Dry Sensor settings. It can use as much as refrigerator, dishwasher, and clothes washer all combined. Clean that lint filter after each load. Never add wet clothes to already dry ones.
~ Whenever possible use a toaster oven or air fryer appliance rather than a large oven. This is usually faster too.
~ Set your refrigerator between 35 and 42 with freezer at 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If a dollar bill is shut in the door and easy to pull out, you may be leaking cool so see about replacing your gasket.
~ Run the dishwasher only when it is full and don’t wash dishes too much before filling the dishwasher. They probably will come out clean and sterilized.
~ Today’s high-definition televisions are using 60% less energy today but certain features can be disabled to still save energy:
“Quick Start for internet ready”
“ABC or Automatic Brightness Control”
“Streaming movies through game consoles” like PlayStation or Xbox uses 30 times more electricity. Consider buying an internet ready TV or a small add-on device like Apple TV, Google Chromecast, or a Roku box which uses less power.
~ If you purchase new energy efficient appliances and electronics, dispose of the old ones properly. Pass them down to younger ones, check with retailers such as Best Buy and see if their recycling programs suit you.
It appears there is so much information about conserving energy for the home, I will be discussing conserving energy for our cars and trucks in my May article. Thanks to EnergySage and UT Extension for the organization of this material. Remember to Waste Not, Want Not during 2023. Changes in habits are the key behaviors to being conservative.

Homemade memories
By Wendy Isom Mercer
Lemon scents. Warm, buttery 7-Up pound cake makes me reminisce.
You are long gone, but you never left. Absent from the body, But fully present.
No words can truly explain it. God’s design made it so.
Our first hug came before my birth and we never let go.
Our embrace is still tight, real tight, like a perfect beauty shop roller set.
Our bond is beyond this earth.
Our mother-daughter love is woven 100,000 times stronger than any apron knot.
Poetic Expression
Hymn For The Hurting
by Amanda Gorman
Everything hurts, Our hearts shadowed and strange, Minds made muddied and mute. We carry tragedy, terrifying and true. And yet none of it is new; We knew it as home, As horror, As heritage.
Even our children Cannot be children, Cannot be.
Everything hurts.
It’s a hard time to be alive, And even harder to stay that way.
We’re burdened to live out these days, While at the same time, blessed to outlive them.
This alarm is how we know We must be altered — That we must differ or die, That we must triumph or try. Thus while hate cannot be terminated, It can be transformed Into a love that lets us live.
May we not just grieve, but give: May we not just ache, but act; May our signed right to bear arms
Never blind our sight from shared harm; May we choose our children over chaos. May another innocent never be lost. Maybe everything hurts, Our hearts shadowed & strange. But only when everything hurts May everything change.
Noon Alarm

A warning for shelter to seek
At noon the neighborhood becomes saturated with sounds as that damn blasted whistle competes in ernest with neighborhood hounds
For a solid minute by which you can set your clock the cacophonous medley aggravates the entire block
Then as suddenly as the ruckus of howls had begun the moment of crisis subsides and the winnerless competition is done
Such is the same with police brutality and death by blue lights that happens on ill fated nights
Mothers wale, fathers too as camera flashes exacerbate family anguish Black and Brown whose loved ones were ‘taken down’
Party’s convene and dance the line on need versus want We say laws with teeth, tough Justice Others say strong police protect us
And after the dead has been churched and public mourners dispersed Outcry, once vibrant, simmers down Til the next Blue Light Special comes round.

CELEBRATING
We would like to sincerely thank Gamma Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated for awarding our Daughter, DIDO TROWELL, with the AKA GAO Scholarship for college. We also thank The Jackson-Madison County Schools Board and School Superintendent, Dr. Marlon King, for their love and support. The scholarship will be extremely beneficial as Dido attends New York University College of Arts and Science on the Pre-Law track.
Our hearts of gratitude go to Gamma Alpha Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I was there in spirit, but I thank my Mother for being present in support of my daughter, Dido. I do not know what I would do without My Mama, Ms. Emma Bond Lanier. Thank you Professor Karen Henning for the photos.

Man accused of kidnapping, raping woman
by Melissa Moon - wreg.com
A man has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and rape after a woman said she was held against her will for days at a Memphis motel.
William Smith, 53, is also facing charges of aggravated assault and domestic assault.
The victim said she willingly came to Memphis with Smith at the end of last month and said they checked in to several different hotels. Wednesday, police found her at a motel in the 3000 block of Lamar Avenue.
The woman said she asked Smith a number of times to take her home, and said he refused, threatened her with a gun, and raped her. She said Smith also hit and choked her when she questioned him about a phone call.
The victim said she never tried to escape because she was afraid and said Smith took the sim card to her cell phone after she dropped it in a toilet.
The victim said Smith was gone when she woke up Wednesday, and she went to hotel staff for help.
Police haven’t said where the victim is from or how she met Smith.
Smith is being held on a $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
