West Tennessee outdoor sportsman takes his talents to Kissimmee, Florida to harvest with Ray Jones SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO a huge wild boar. L’Ouverture numberonecoach@hotmail.com Marable is a native of or 731-694-8614. Humboldt who often travels all around the country to fill his thrills for outdoor adventures.Ê Skills developed in West Tennessee are used by many hunters to explore new opportunities for experiences of a life time. That is exactly what L’Ouverture does and boar hunting is the adventure that took him to Florida this time. He used trained dogs to track this gigantic hog nearly ten miles before they were finally able to secure the harvest. Ultimately it was he and the 300 pound sow in a head up battle in which he won. Wild hog hunting can be dangerous because of their aggressive nature. POLICE INVESTIGATING SHOOTING, MAN IN CUSTODY On March 26, 2019 around 4:45 p.m., Officers responded to a shooting at a business on College Park Cove. The victim, a 44-year-old Jackson man, identified the shooter as a co-worker, Bruce Cole (left). Officers began immediately searching for Cole, 41, of Jackson. Shortly afterward, Officers attempted to stop a car on Old Hickory Blvd., in which Cole was a passenger. Cole fled from the car and ran into a heavily wooded area. He continued through the dense woods and crossed I-40. Officers saw Cole crossing the Interstate and arrested him on Vann Drive. The victim was flown to a Memphis hospital and was last known to be in critical condition. Police are continuing the investigation and anticipate filing charges on Cole.
FATHER INDICTED FOR FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND AGGRAVATED CHILD ABUSE IN DEATH OF HIS EIGHT-WEEK OLD SON A 2018 death investigation by the Jackson Police Department has resulted in the arrest of Mathew Sealy, 32, of Jackson, for the homicide of his eight-week-old son. On July 8, 2018, Jackson police were called to Woodcreek Apartments at 1000 Hollywood Drive. An infant was found deceased inside the parents’ apartment. Investigators were called and processed the scene. The infant’s body was sent for autopsy in Nashville where it was determined that his death was the result of a homicide. Additional investigation revealed that the infant’s father, Sealy, was responsible for his death. On April 1, 2019, Investigators presented the facts of the case and medical findings to the Madison County Grand Jury who returned indictments charging Sealey with First-Degree Murder and Aggravated Child Abuse. Jackson police arrested Sealey, without incident, at 6:30 p.m. April 1 at a home in Humboldt. Sealey is being held at the Madison County Jail and will be arraigned in Madison County Circuit Court, Division II, on a date to be determined by the Court.

Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle shot dead at age 33 Lyndsey Parker - Yahoo Music March 31, 2019 Police are continuing to seek the killer of rapper Nipsey Hussle, who was shot outside his store in South Los Angeles in a burst of gunfire that injured two other people, officials told the Los Angeles Times. Only a few weeks after his only studio album,ÊVictory Lap, was up for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards, West Coast rapper Nipsey Hussle (real name: Ermias Asghedom) has died at age 33, after being shot outside his South Los Angeles clothing store, Marathon Clothing, on Sunday afternoon. Anfernee Harris, Dontarrius Hibbler and Ronald Ladd Junior
THREE CHARGED WITH MURDER AFTER INNOCENT BYSTANDER SHOT DEAD IN TUNICAÊCOUNTY POSTED APRIL 1, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR,Êwreg.com TUNICA COUNTY, Miss. —Ê A Mississippi woman was airlifted to Memphis after authorities say she was shot Sunday afternoon in Tunica County. According to the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office, 26year-old Skyeesha Pige was traveling down Nellie Johnson Drive around 3:45 p.m. Sunday when shots were fired. She was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis after first responders found her unresponsive in her car. She was pronounced dead at 7 p.m. Monday. Investigators said the victim wasn’t the intended target, but instead an innocent by stander on her way home. Authorities said they later identified the intended target and threeÊ suspects connected to the case. They identified the suspects as 22-year-old Anfernee Harris, 18-year-old Dontarrius Hibbler and Ronald Ladd Junior. All three were charged with aggravated assault and second degree murder.
Madison County Criminal Justice Complex was the setting for 10 Madison County inmates to graduate from “Celebrate Recovery; Life’s Healing choices class . “For people to come up and actually witness these ladies explaining how this program has affected their lives and how it’s changed them and how it given them a new purpose and new meaning, is very emotional, said Madison County Circuit Court Judge Don Allen.” (right) “The women in this program say they now have the steps to succeedÊ once they are releasedÊ “Unfortunately, a lot of these ladies are here in jail for some period of time. So we want to give them the tools they need so that once they are released they can hopefully go out and make better decisions not only for themselves but for their families, their children said Judge Allen” Among the graduates were Jennifer Schuerenberg , who says the program helped her figure out her priorities” Scherenberg’s kids are proud of their mom. Judge Allen said “there is also a low recidivism rate for the people who graduate from this program”
PIKEVILLE WOMAN CHARGED WITH BRIBERY BLEDSOE COUNTY – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment and arrest of a Pikeville woman on bribery charges. At the request of 12th District Attorney General Mike Taylor, in November 2018, TBI Agents and investigators with the District Attorney’s office began investigating Sonya Nale on a complaint of bribery. During the course of the investigation, Agents and investigators developed information that in September 2018, Nale offered to pay an arresting deputy to drop charges against another individual, and later offered money to a Nale judge in exchange for dropping those same charges. On Monday, the Bledsoe County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Sonya Hawkins Nale (DOB 06/ 05/1970) with two counts of Bribery of a Public Servant. She was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Bledsoe County Jail on a $10,000 bond.
POLICE: WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER STABBING RELATIVE OVERÊTRASH POSTED APRIL 1, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR,Êwreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. —A 19-year-old woman was arrested after police say she attacked a relative with a knife after being asked to pick up her trash. The alleged incident happened on Sunday, March 31, in the 3300 block of Sarabee Drive in Parkway Village. The victim told police it all started when Alexandria Jennings (left) knocked over some trash and didn’t pick it up. That led to an argument between the two. The victim stated that it was during that argument that Jennings went to the kitchen, picked up a knife and attacked her with it. The relative was injured on the hand while trying to defend herself, police said. Jennings was arrested and charged with a felony count of aggravated assault.

A Matter of Opinion . . .
On monuments and memorials JAMES CHERRY | OPINION COLUMNIST - THEJACKSONSUN.COM 3-31-19
For the third time in less than a month, the Madison County Commission debated the placement of a lynching memorial on the courthouse grounds.Ê The endeavor is sponsored by the Jackson Madison County Community Remembrance Project in association with the Equal Justice Initiative and seeks to memorialize victims of lynching in Madison County.Ê In 1886, Eliza Woods was lynched on the courthouse lawn and five years later, John Brown was murdered in the same fashion on the same location.Ê The memorial would be in the form of a plaque paid for by the EJI.Ê The Commission’s objection is to the wording on the plaque that describes lynching “as an act of terrorism against the African American Community.”Ê The Commission’s position is that individuals were responsible for these acts and they weren’t reflective of an entire community. The Commission’s myopic view of history is either one of ignorance or inclination.Ê Lynching was not only an act of terrorism against the African American community, it was a State sponsored act of terrorism against the African American community.Ê Between 1877 and 1950, according to the EJI, there were over 4,000 racial lynching in 12 Southern states, 237 of those in Tennessee.Ê After the Civil War (1865-1877) our nation established a Freedmen’s Bureau and engaged in a concerted effort to live up to its creed of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for its four million ex-slaves.Ê For 12 years, under the protection of Federal troops, Blacks were encouraged, enfranchised, empowered and won elections to southern state legislatures and even to the U.S. Congress.Ê But in 1876 a tightly contested Presidential raced between Republican Rutherford Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden ended with a back room deal between supporters of both.Ê The Democrats conceded the presidency to Rutherford, but on one condition:Ê The troops had to go, ensuring a return to de-facto slavery for its black citizens and a continuance of white supremacy.Ê The bargain remains the Compromise of 1877. After the Civil War, Southern legislatures passed laws known as Black Codes to restrict the freedom of newly emancipated blacks and to keep them in economic bondage.Ê After the Compromise of 1877, Southern legislatures ushered in a series of Jim Crow laws that required segregation between whites and “persons of colour” in public transportation, schools, parks, theatres and restaurants.Ê Even the dead had to be separated by race.Ê Any violations or these laws could and did result in lynching.Ê In fact, any capricious violation, such as “reckless eyeballing” could be a death sentence for a black man or woman.Ê Most lynchings became Fourth of July celebrations; no one was ever arrested for their acts of vigilantism and the coroner’s inquest declared the victim died at “the hands of parties unknown.”Ê Therefore lynching, whether 5 percent or 95 percent of the white population participated, was not only State sponsored terrorism, it was State sanctioned as well. Some on the Commission are concerned about the JMC Community Remembrance Project position on Confederate statues.Ê The Community Remembrance project is only concerned about memorializing those lynched in Madison County.Ê But it should be noted that the Confederate monument on the Madison County Courthouse lawn makes a statement as loud today as when it was erected in 1888:Ê “This is the white man’s county and these are our Negroes.Ê We do with them what we will.” There is a direct correlation behind the spirit of Confederate monuments and lynching from 1877 until 1950, the same spirit that recently walked into a Jewish synagogue in Pittsburgh, got behind the wheel of an automobile in Charlottesville and attended a Bible study at an AME church in Charleston. Today, there is much talk about racial reconciliation.Ê But there can be no reconciliation without truth, unpleasant and unpopular as it may be.Ê The truth remains that in later part of the 19th century two black people were lynched on the courthouse lawn.Ê That fact can’t be altered, whitewashed or forgotten.Ê And neither should it be.Ê The County Commission should take the first step in recognizing a historical wrong and allow the memorial, as written, to be placed at the scene of the crime. Finally, a lynching is nothing less than a crucifixion.Ê Both were public acts humiliation and intimidation.Ê It was not uncommon for lynching victims to have their body parts housed as souvenirs.Ê One has to wonder how this depravity affected whites as well.Ê This is a common history that we can either use as a teachable moment or do our best Pontius Pilate impersonation. JAMES E.ÊCHERRY IS A POET, NOVELIST AND SOCIAL CRITIC FROM JACKSON.

CAMPAIGN SIGNS CLUTTER ?Ê The “political campaign signs wars have begun” Have you noticed recently how quickly the City of Jackson has filled up with political campaign signs for the upcoming City elections May 7? Almost every intersection, roadsides, vacant lots, vacant houses, right of way, yards, and highly visible traffic areas are where campaign signs are saturated! We’ve had several campaigns contact us already complaining why other candidates are placing campaign signs on “right of way” and why campaigns are placing signs on private properties without permission? I’ve reached out to many campaigns about Placing their signs on the public right of way and in the city Mayor’s race, candidate for Mayor Jimmy Eldridge indicated he has placed no signs on “public right of way” and he said he will not place his campaign signs on properties without permission” candidates for city council such as Mitch Hatchett said they will only place signs where they have permission. While advertising by placing campaign signs throughout the City is a necessary element of being a candidate, most candidates were not sure if signs affects or changes any votes.Ê It’s a part of running for office and hopefully after the election all candidates will be courteous and respectful of citizens and quickly pick up and remove their signs. What’s your opinion on campaign signs throughout the City?Ê We would be interested in your thoughts comments on what affect it may have on the voters. Always appreciate and value your opinions at rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com.

Reginald Hosey of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (Human Resources) presented excellent evidenced – based statistics, overview on Occupational Safety Health Administration’s (OSHA) role in workplace Safety and on-going efforts to change State & Federal laws. Per OHSA, Employers are required by Federal law to create and maintain a safe work environment for all their employees. This includes educational setting because school districts employ more than fifty (50) employees and school are workplaces for the teachers and staff Although each state’sÊ laws are very uniqueÊ only proposed changes initiated by Victims families were discussed. According to federal data, 24.4% of violence incidents happen on school property and 45.6 % happen in a workplace environment. The activist Jane Brady Nosal whose daughter Caroline was murdered after complaining of harassment by a male co-worker; lead the victims’ panel discussion.ÊAnother panelist was Jared Black’s Uncle who shared his on-going efforts in Santa Fe, Tx to change the law so his nephew’s killers ( and future shooters) are charged in Federal Court as “ Home grown domestic terrorists”. A Nationwide petition is being circulated to submit to the Federal legislators. Panelists shared their heartache, at losing a love one and information on proposed legislation (Senate Bill 781) in Missouri. The bill, called “Kenny’s Law,” is named after Kenneth Suttner, a 17-year-old from Glasgow, Mo., who took his own life in December 2016. Arlene Martin-Norman, Owner/CEO of Healthier Future Consulting Services (Nashville, TN) -left- attended this Annual training which was held at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, Orlando, FL. “We received great training by Kathleen Bonczyk of The Workplace Violence Prevention Institute.” Pictured right is Bonczyk, Founder of Workplace Violence Prevention Institute, in the center the young men are students who attend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School durning the Shooting which occurred on April 20, 2018. The young man on the left is Elijah Manley, 19, the youngest person to run for the Broward County School Board and currently a candidate for President 2020. The other young man was also a student at Stoneman Douglas High School. I didn’t write down his name. The other gentleman, I think is Kathleen’s husband. I learned new strategies to deal with workplace/School bullying to prevent workplace violence. Douglas High School Shooting on April 14, 2018 shared their unique stories. One of the students, Elijah Manley has become the youngest person to run for the Broward County School Board and he is currently a candidate for President 2020. (He does not meet eligibility requirement to hold office (as the President of the United States) but is not restricted from running for the office. His mission is to bring the Youth’s perspective; as a student he had reported concerns about the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter. His and others concerns were ignored by the Administration. One of the preventive action step take-away, that the legal system needs to “stop serving legal notices (such as Protective Orders, etc.) on the job”; considering almost 50% of violent shooting happen at work. Ê Other suggestions as action steps were to: 1. Parents need to attend all School Board meetings. 2. Attend City Council & State Legislative Hearings NOTE TO READERS: TENNESSEE’S VERSION OF OSHA IS CALLED THE TENNESSEE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (TOSHA). HEALTH DEPARTMENT URGES TESTING DURING STD AWARENESS MONTH JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in recognizing April as STD Awareness Month. CDC estimates there are about 20 million new cases of STDs each year in the United States. About half of these infections are in people between the ages of 15 and 24. Three common STDs—chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis—saw sharp increases across the United States between 2013 and 2017. In 2017 alone, Madison County had 311 reported cases of gonorrhea, 20 reported cases of syphilis, and 725 reported cases of chlamydia, according to data from the Tennessee Department of Health. Madison County had one of the state’s highest rates of reported cases of gonorrhea in 2017. “Madison County has consistently been in the top counties within the state for rate of STIs every year,” Epidemiologist Shanna Shearon said. “It’s important to get tested so you and your partner are protected.” The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department offers STD testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and hepatitis C. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are curable with the right medicines, yet most cases go undiagnosed and untreated. Untreated STDs can lead to severe health problems like infertility, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth in infants, and increased HIV risk. The surest way to protect yourself against STDs is to abstain from having sex. If you decide to have sex, you and your partner should get tested for STDs beforehand. Because many STDs have no symptoms, getting tested is the only way to know for sure if you have an infection. If you test positive for an STD, work with your doctor to get the correct treatment. Some STDs can be cured with the right medication. Those that aren’t curable can be treated. Call 731-423-3020 for more information or to schedule an appointment to get tested.
