BOLIVAR MAYOR RECEIVES EMERGING LEADER AWARD MARTIN, Tenn. – Julian McTizic, mayor of the city of Bolivar, received the African American Conference Emerging Leader Award from the University of Tennessee at Martin’s WestStar Leadership Program during its annual African American Leadership Conference held April 26. Each time a fisherman throws a line there’s the chance that a record catch is always lurking beneath the waters. That is why it is vital to have tackle ready for anything that might be attracted to your bait. Many records may have been broken and the person fishing didn’t even realize it because the fish got away. But, that didn’t happen when Lionel Ferguson hauled in a 5 pound 7.68 ounce Black Crappie in Philadelphia, Tennessee to break the world record in a farm pond. The International Game Fish Association confirmed the record after TWRA officials weighed it on digital scales. The previous Tennessee record was a 4 pound 4 ounce crappie caught in Brown Lake in Henderson, Tennessee. Always expect a record catch each time you cast your line because The Great Outdoors of West Tennessee is full of lakes and pounds that could have the next world record fish waiting to be hung. Make sure the kids are ready also because they might be the ones to break the world record catch.

Pictured right is Lionel Ferguson and a world record Crappie.

Woman charged after nail salon video goes viral May 21, 2018ÊÊMallory Cooke JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman accused of driving away with a business owner on the back of her car now faces criminal charges. Video of the incident went viral. Angela Henly appeared Monday in Jackson City Court on a reckless endangerment charge. She shook her head while the judge talked. “The victim stood on the back of the vehicle in an attempt to keep the suspect from leaving and was bumped with the vehicle multiple times,” Jackson City Court Judge Blake Anderson read from an affidavit. Jackson police said the incident happened Saturday outside Unique Nails on Wiley Parker Road. According to court documents, Henly refused to pay for services. “The suspect drove across the parking lot into the street,” Anderson said. The victim’s daughter did not want to talk on camera, but she said the driver paid her bill. She said the passenger in the car did not. The daughter said her mom got behind the car to get the woman’s license plate. Police said they found the victim on Brianfield Drive. Officers said she went to the hospital. Police said they found Henly in the parking lot at Old Hickory Mall. Henly is currently free on $15,000 bond. The victim’s daughter said her mother is out of the hospital and is OK. Henly is scheduled to return to court at 1:30 p.m. June 21.

GUESS WHO’S BACK ...and Guess Who’s Got’im

By Bill Marable

For many years, listeners to the local radio station, 96 Kix FM tuned in to hear ‘Richard D’ spin records, do live remotes, and promote the flagship of the Thomas Media brand. But after 15 years on the local radio scene, Richard Donnell, Jr. says he hit the glass ceiling at Kix and wanted to pursue new endeavors.ÊÊ Ê “I had gotten depressed and grown tired. Not tired of entertaining my community, but tired of my stagnant conditions. I wanted to pursue more out of life.Ê I knew I was doing a good job at Kix, but felt as though my appreciation at work was minimal.”Ê Ê Therefore, three years ago, he bid a tearful farewell to Jackson and his fans, packed up the family and moved to Georgia. Ê Banking on a few connections he’d made in the Atlanta area, Donnell, Jr. says he prayed on the matter for about six months, then took a leap of faith.Ê However, as the old saying goes, “even though the grass may look greener on the other side, it seldom is.” Ê Deeply rooted in the Christian faith, Donnell, Jr. says even though things didn’t turn out as planned in Atlanta, it still was a learning experience. “I figured out it was some lessons that God needed me to learn first before he put me back in front of the mic,” said Donnell, Jr. Fast forward to May 2018 and ‘Richard D’ is back on the airwaves, rocking the mic for Forever Communication’s Jammin’ Jackson 97.7 FM. Ê When asked how it feels to be back on the air in Jackson, the 41-year old disc jockey flashed his signature smile, barely able to contain his excitement. Ê“Man it feels GREAT!Ê I thought I was never going to miss radio, Jackson, and the simple life,” he says.Ê “But then I get to Atlanta and I did start missing Jackson.” Richard D can be heard rocking the beat and Melancholy over simple things like the monthly flea market, Dixie Castle sending shout-outs on JJ97.7 Monday through (his favorite eatery), his church home at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Friday from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Church in Pinson, Tennessee, and his family, he came to the realization that a return to Jackson might be in his best interests. “I realized that I was a country boy and that God was telling me to go back home.” Ê Humbled by his experience and sporting a new-found sense of responsibility, Richard D left Atlanta and returned to the Hub City where he found a new home at Jammin’ Jackson 97.7. “The management and air personalities at JJ97.7 have been quite welcoming. Here I have more advancement opportunities to succeed in my professional life. The station’s General Manager, Roger Vestal, and my immediate supervisor, Jennifer Jaye, have helped me tremendously. Plus, the opportunity to be in the community more and help the children of my city is quite gratifying. I’m tired of so many kids thinking that sports or music are their only vehicles to success. That type of thinking is what is being fed to them. Also, the educational system has not been as beneficial as it can be. I must bring this awareness to my hometown, if not the country!” Yes sir! It really feels great to be back in Jackson. And on 50,000 watts!”
