TEEN KILLERS AND LIFE SENTENCES By Jack Ryan - Mon, 05/03/2021

In a ruling last week involving a Mississippi prisoner who was 15 years old when he stabbed his grandfather to death in 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court made it easier for states to sentence minors to life in prison without parole. -Page 9

OUTDOORS The pandemic caused many people to spend more time doing home with Ray Jones improvement and Send photos to: gardening. With so- numberonecoach@hotmail.com cial distancing being or 731-694-8614 at the top of the list flowers became a passion for most home owners. One of the best ways to have good success is to plant on patios in pots. Planting in pots allows you to have them close where they can be properly cared for. It helps avoid underground animals from invading them after all the hard work you put in. The summer heat is hard on some plants and they must have constant attention such as watering, dusting and getting dead leaves broken off. When flowers are planted in pots it eliminates chopping weeds which is the worst nightmare for gardeners. If you want to have beauty around your home without much fanfare try to get started with patio flowers.

OPERATION ROCK & ROLL

Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr. is pleased to announce the May 21 conclusion of an immensely successful operation with the United States Marshals Service and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which focused on a two-week Sex Offender Registry compliance and fugitive warrant operation named, “OPERATION ROCK & ROLL”. “The Marshals Service was proud to partner with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and TBI on this sex offender compliance and fugitive operation,” said U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller. “Safe communities are a priority for the Marshals, and we will continue to answer the call for assistance.” “TBI intelligence analysts worked weeks in advance gathering key information, as well as during the operation, to support officers on the ground,” said Assistant Special Agent in Charge Shelly Smitherman. “Helping ensure the success of operations like this one is a key reason the TBI was created and we will continue to help our fellow law enforcement agencies in whatever ways we can.” “My thanks to the U.S. Marshals Service and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for their partnership for this operation. Hundreds of hours of teamwork were devoted to this mission by the Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Bureau, deputies in the Sex Offender Registry, Deputy U.S. Marshal’s and Task Force Officers, and the TBI personnel who were involved in this operation,” said Sheriff Bonner.

OPINION:

TEEN KILLERS Cont’d from page1 The 6-3 ruling was a change of course from prior cases that worked in favor of young criminals. In 2005 the court said the death penalty for minors violated the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. In 2010 it restricted juvenile life-without-parole sentences to those who had killed someone. And in 2012 it banned mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juvenile killers. Without doubt, some of these minors

deserve the harshest possible, longest-term punishment. But given that Mississippi, at the time of the 2012 Supreme Court ruling, had 87 people serving life-without-parole sentences for teenage crimes, it is fair to ask if this sentence is being applied excessively. If the answer is “yes,” it may be due to a quirk in the justice system. A story last November by the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting noted that the state Legislature has not passed a new law to bring juvenile sentencing in line with U.S.

Supreme Court rulings from a few years ago. In that absence, the Mississippi Supreme Court has given state judges two sentencing options for juveniles convicted of first-degree murder or capital murder. Judges can sentence a juvenile to either a life term with parole eligibility after 10 years; or to life without parole. That’s an easy decision for almost any judge. Few would be willing to risk the release of a young killer after only 10 years in prison. By default, that very likely makes life without parole all but

a mandatory sentence, and the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling last week only seemed to encourage it. In the case decided last week, the 15-yearold boy was living with his grandparents when the grandfather found a girl in the teen’s bedroom. That same day, the grandfather was fixing a sandwich when another argument started. The grandson stabbed his grandfather eight times, first with a kitchen knife, and then with another one when the original weapon broke. The teen did not call 911, tried to hide

the body and fled with his girlfriend. At the time of the original conviction, state law required life without parole. The 2012 Supreme Court ruling forbade such mandatory sentences, but in a second hearing after that ruling, a judge again gave the defendant a no-parole life sentence. Was there any other choice? The crime merited much more than 10 years in prison — at least 25 or 30, and maybe more. But life without parole should be reserved for the worst offenders.

This troubled, impulsive, angry kid does not seem to meet that definition. Juvenile justice is tricky. Killers of all ages should be locked up. The question that applies to juveniles is, for how long? Courts and legislatures clearly have work to do on this topic.

And Your Point is . . . Juveniles Convicted of Murder – Is a Sentence to Life Without Parole Possible? Laws change constantly, and juveniles previously convicted of murder and sentenced to life with no chance of parole may have new opportunities for a release from incarceration. It is through the changes with the Supreme Court decisions that chances of early release or lesser penalties are even possible for juveniles convicted of these crimes. Decisions Before 2016

The United States Supreme Court covers all manner of decisions that may range from the significant damage of various cases to the overview of entire defending parties such as the whole of juveniles when regarding life altering matters. The concern of conviction for murder is one such matter that changed first in 2012 where the courts should consider the matter individually as explained and required by the federal government. However, in 2016 a new decision changed to retroactively apply this judgment on prior cases when the juvenile faces a life sentence without any possibility of parole. Before 2016, this was a constitutional possibility, but after it is unconstitutional.

Life Sentence

The juvenile usually faces the adult criminal justice system when charged with murder. Depending on the specific factors of the case and the behavior of the individual, the judge may proceed with penalties that place him or in a federal prison for life. The sentence usually also removes the possibility of parole. Before the changes in 2012 and 2016, the sentence in prison would leave the child behind bars without any hope of returning to society. This was possible even if the youth was sixteen or seventeen. Life sentences usually do not apply for teens under these ages, but other penalties may become nearly as severe.

Reasons for the Life Sentence

Usually, the gravest sentences such as life in prison are those that the courts reserve for the worst criminals and illegal activities. Murder usually requires the worst possible penalties that the state or federal government may use against the perpetrator. For juveniles that commit such heinous acts as a homicide, a conviction may take away the possibility of remaining in society. However, before the judgment changed to provide the potential for parole, there was no opportunity of freedom attached to these convictions. The primary reasons involve the factors of these cases. Murder generally takes away the life of the victim and leaves surviving family in shambles. The important factors of murder cases include the actions of the accused. The juvenile must use a weapon, force, intimidation or mayhem to punish another and take away his or her life. The elements of the case may also include additional factors of aggravated elements or severe harm. The activity may encompass intentional harm or torture. The juvenile may cause devastation to the life of another or injury and kill multiple individuals. Any other attached problem such as a weapon intended to main or dismember or disfigure could also cause the death of the victim.

Unintentional Death

An important reason that many juvenile cases need a specific review for each circumstance and conviction is that some murder convictions are not actually homicide. Some teens accidentally kill another person but face murder charges because of one issue or another presented in the courtroom. Others may have an involvement in a murder situation but did not actually kill the victim. Some are truly innocent of the charges but were unable to prove it in court because of a lack of evidence or alibi. Unintentional death of another person is not murder, but it may still have similar charges such as manslaughter with severe penalties.

Banning Capital Punishment

The courts through the Supreme Court rulings on juvenile cases banned the use of the death sentence or capital punishment for young offenders. It was in 2012 that the new ruling not only banned death sentences but mandatory sentences with life in prison without any chance of parole. With these provisions in effect, the teen facing an adult criminal justice system will not face death by lethal injection even if he or she intentionally and willfully killed another person maliciously. The primary goal for some judges is still rehabilitation. With counseling, even in prison, the youth may face up to his or her actions.

Legal Help with Life Sentences

A lawyer is often necessary to assist with acquiring parole for juveniles convicted of murder when facing a life sentence in prison. The legal professional may help apply the retroactively implemented changes to juvenile murder convictions that may eventually lead to the possibility of freedom through parole. The Saga Continues The facts are disputable, contentious at best especially so by the time they reach the West Who started what and when how it escalated and why did fighting begin One thing that goes without saying both sides for centuries have been laying claim to the Holy seat trying to fit one shoe on two feet Rockets glare in night sky, reminiscent of celebration however the light of morning reveals mass devastation entire families from Matriarch to young child vanished from existence entombed beneath a rubble pile United in their condemnation, Nations advise firing to cease so that medical relief may enter, as both sides sue for peace Oh Garza, Jewel of Palestine, how long must you live in dread How many souls will it take to satisfy the grave with the dead And Israel, with your ‘Iron Dome” affixed heavy is the hand when controls are switched there is no simple smacking of the hand there is only destruction of a people and their land Can two nations, in co-existence thrive without the demise of one thought genocide That is a quandary of Biblical proportion unlikely to be settled by Mid-Eastern ‘Consortium’ By Bill Marable © 5-22-21

Hunting Season Once again, we find another young her dead. The final bullet in the top of the head. A mother and father are left to cry, wondering why there child has to die. The officer said. “ the boy struck me in the face .” It seem young Mike forgot his place , and race. The D. A. said, “it was all justified.” dozens of witness must have lied. The officer said . “he feels no strife” and is given a chance he’ll take another life. Many people are worried and feeling sad, wishing that justice could be had. Now I’m not a hunter but one thing is clear it don’t take twelve shots to bring down a bear. Dewight © 11-27-14

Poetic Expression 2020

I sit back, scrolling through my phone, eyes soaking, and tired. All the breaking news racing through my mind, the world may be crumbling, but you hold me together. I look to you when all my pieces are scatter, I run to you to feel the wholeness of my heart again.

The power and strength you have, the grace and mercy you have provided. People seem to forget about you! Crying out to the universe but no one answers, they get angry at the world. The fire inside them burns their soul, Their lives fade away right in front of their eyes.

I sit and pray for this nation, if we had common sense, if we only sought the real answers, if we only stop bickering enough to breathe, to breathe in coolness or your presence, to open our ears to hear your whispers. Why do we doubt the power of the one? The world is much better off when producing love and impartiality. Justice shouldn’t be famished but granted. Look at color as if there is no color at all. Let us bind and stand together with the power of our oppressors. Let us go out and get the freedom we were once granted, And will soon become ours once more.

About the Author

West Tennessee Native, he was born to two lovely parents Thomas and Lucy Boykin in a small town named Humboldt, Tn. He graduated high school in 2004, and attend college at the University of Tennessee At Chattanooga, where he studied Business Marketing. It was then he found passion for the fashion industry. In 2006 I did my first photo shoot with photographer and now friend Erika Holmes of Elite photography. That photo shoot would forever change my life. After that I was signed to a high fashion designer as a Ralph Lauren Model. I then transferred colleges and moved to Atlanta, Ga to attend Bauder College of Fashion & Design were later graduated with my degree in Fashion Merchandising. Through fashion school I gained exposure by producing fashion shows, as well as wardrobe styling and it was then I would elevate to producing several fashion shows such as Oscar De La Renta 2008 fall winter show, along with Bronner Brothers Hair show as creative director/ stage coordinator. During Bronner brothers I had the pleasure to meet and style Bre from America’s Next top model, that landed me working with her for several years. Then I moved on and developed my own company Encore Entertainment Groups LLC. After starting my company, I began to produce fashions shows under EEG as well as trained models for the fashion industry under my company. Soon after experiencing success in life’s progression, he lost a very important piece of himself, his father. This is where his journey of battling depressions and mental health. Writing his book and leaning music is where he found his saving grace. Encore Entertainment Group, LLC, DBA DonVinnie Boykin, USA

officers see the consequences of not buckling up. We see the loss of life. Often, it could have been prevented with the simple click of a seat belt. This should be automatic.” According to Tennessee’s Integrated Traffic

This represents approximately 33 percent of the state’s total traffic fatalities in 2020. According to NHTSA, in 2019, there were 9,466 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 55 percent of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m. – 5:59 a.m.) were not wearing seat belts. May 23, 2021 Nikita Dennis - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — A local church is celebrating the Class of 2021. St. James Baptist Church in Jackson is celebrating its members who graduated in the Class of 2021 with a drive by celebration. Members of the church cheered the graduates on as they drove by handing out gifts. Two of the graduates say it’s a blessing to be honored by the members of their church. “It feels really good because they’ve always been behind us and they’ve always supported us in everything we do,” Madison Academic graduate, Taylor Harris said. “If feels amazing to be recognized because I know must churches don’t do everything for their teams and youth of the church, but this church is amazing and we always do stuff for the youth and the teams,” Jahzara Butler said. Both of them say they plan to attend college in the fall and major in Biology and Architecture.
