MAYFLIES & DOGWOOD
West Tennessee OUTDOORS
Fishing signs have been a long standing tradition for with Ray Jones years in the Great Outdoors SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO of West Tennessee. Moon numberonecoach@hotmail.com phases, wind direction, or 731-694-8614. temperature and other details determine when a lot of people will fish. Some of them have validity while others are just a chance of luck. But for me, I will bet my boots that when mayflies start flying and dogwoods start blooming the bluegills are on the beds spawning. Late May and June is an exciting time for bream fishing because all you have to do is be in the right spot. A lake will have many bream beds all over it and you can fish one bed for a while then go to another one. We once caught so many that my late friend Mr. Kidd said “I don’t know what they think this bait is but I hope they keep thinking it”. It is so much fun to catch fish after fish with many of them being slabs. I don’t know what others go by but right now the mayflies are flying and the dogwoods are blooming and I’m going fishing.Ê I suggest you do that same thing and take the kids with you while the mayflies are flying and the dogwoods are doing their thing in the Great Outdoor of West Tennessee.Ê The photo is Ray Jones and a resent catch of bluegills.

Lakeland mayor says ‘gang members’ opened fire at Sweet 16 party, injuring 3 kids LAKELAND, Tenn. — Three male juveniles were shot multiple times during a Sweet 16 party Sunday night in Lakeland, Shelby County authorities said. The shooting happened on Matwood Oak Drive around 10:30. “Some people showed up that were not invited. They were told they couldn’t come in and as I understand it, they kept trying to get in. They said, ‘Okay we’re shutting the party down,’ and that’s when someone started shooting,” Earle Farrell, spokesman for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, said. Neighbors told us off camera they heard about eight gunshots and then saw kids running from the clubhouse, even jumping over some people’s fences. Soon enough, ambulances and about 20 police cars filled the neighborhood. “I think everybody reacted the same way when they heard a Sweet 16 party was shot up. This didn’t used to happen and it’s just a different time,” Farrell said. According to a Facebook post by Lakeland Mayor Wyatt Bunker, the shooting was at a clubhouse used by a homeowners association, and the people involved were mostly teens from Cordova and Germantown high schools. “Apparently this group was able to use a residents name to rent the facility for a ‘Sweet Sixteen Party,’” Bunker wrote. “Gang members, who were refused entry, returned to their vehicle and began shooting at guests. Sources at the scene reported 3 shot with 2 in critical condition.” Mayor Bunker has friends who live in the neighborhood and rushed over after hearing about the shooting. “For everybody, it’s kind of surreal. But the fact of the matter is, Lakeland is a great city. We’re a safe city and always will be,” he said. Bunker says the homeowner who paid to rent the space wasn’t at the party, which is something the association is looking into and plan to meet about. Two of the victims were taken to Regional One in critical condition; another was listed as stable, according to the sheriff’s office. SCSO says they’re interviewing potential suspects and say they were possibly in a white Chrysler 200.

CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Marie Haynes appeared before a judge Thursday in Jackson City Court on an attempted first-degree murder charge. Haynes is accused of hitting a woman with a car Sunday in the parking lot outside Old Hickory Mall, according to an arrest warrant. Video of the incident went viral. Police said Haynes and the victim got in a fight outside Chuck E. Cheese’s. Officers said afterward the victim approached the car and yelled at Haynes. Police said Haynes allegedly hit the victim with the vehicle, knocking her to the ground. While the victim was down, officers said Haynes backed the car up and tried to hit her again, then reportedly left. Police said the victim suffered a fractured arm and busted blood vessels in her eye. The prosecutor told the judge they have text messages from Haynes saying she wishes the victim had died. Haynes is being held at the Madison County jail in lieu of $75,000 bond. She is scheduled to return to court at 1:30 p.m. June 21.

CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 At the intersection, Trenton police say they found bullet casings on the ground and stray bullet holes in nearby houses. Shortly after, they say they got a call from Milan police. “That a person had arrived at the Milan ER,” Lt. Wilson said, “and he was suffering from a gun shot wound.” Investigators said shortly after midnight, Anderson was pronounced dead. People in the area say this type of violence has been happening more often in their neighborhood and involving younger people. Police say it is still early in the investigation and they do not have a motive or suspect information at this time, which is why they are asking for your help. “There were several individuals out in the area at the intersection there, so we believe that there are people who saw what happened and know what happened,” Lt. Wilson said. Lt. Wilson says Anderson died from one gun shot to the abdomen. They believe he was sitting in a car at the time. If you have any information on this incident, call the Trenton Police Department at (731) 855-1413.

55th Annual NAACP Freedom Banquet Highlights By DowntownRickey Brown The Jackson Madison County NAACP branch hosted its 55th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Carl Perkins Civic Center Sunday evening to a overflow crowd! With this years theme “Steadfast and Immovable” the evening reflected on the accomplishments of the NAACP since 1909, and yet more more work to be done in the areas of social justice, voter registration and participation, discrimination, and being a advocate for those without a voice. Dr. Logan Hampton, President of Lane College served as Guest Speaker along with Mr. Shawn Daly, General Manager of Toyota Bodine as 2018 Honorary Chairman. The evening was highlighted with awards to those in the community who have earned the distinction of being called legends. The NAACP’s work is vital to all people in protecting freedom, liberty and justice for all. Branch President Mr. Marshall Brooks along with Banquet Chair, Dr. Martha Robinson each welcomed the people to the banquet and encouraged all to get involved in the community and work for the good and cause for all peoples rights and liberties.
WHAT IS OUR SPIRITUAL TEMPERATURE? Each of Us Will Have to Answer That Question I am learning to feast on the Word of God. I have learned much about how different people apply the truth of Scriptures to the major problems of the 21 st century, church, and society. I guess we believe someone has to be the expert. How else would we learn these things? Someone has to be quotable. We cannot just believe these things on our own, can we? A number of years ago I grew tired of seeking all the answers, so I began to read the living Word of God. Today I am just an old guy who loves to graze and chew and chew on the sweet truth of God’s precious Word. Strange things began to happen. My life became packed with peace and joy. Moreover it seems I am too conservative for some; and in other areas too unpredictable to others. It’s not important to me that everyone believes everything exactly as I do on every issue. When you are searching the Word of God for truth, the truth is more valuable than the fact that some things don’t quite fit. The truth seems perfectly capable of speaking for itself. That means that everyone can read and graze and digest on the precious Word of God on his or her own. That seems to frighten some because we want someone to tell us the truth. We live in a day when we have more tools to learn the scriptures than anyone has ever had available at any time in history. The time is here for us to return to being men and women of the precious Word of God... “The Living Word”. Will you take time to graze and meditate, this will change your life. Gary Deaton
