Social distancing is the new numberonecoach@hotmail.com wave in the United States and or 731-694-8614. kids are affected by it also. While some kids deal with it pretty well others have a difficult time with loneliness and not being able to see their friends. As adults have hobbies of their own to fight depression brought on by Covid-19 it is important that we keep our youth active in order to help them maintain sanity throughout these coming days. It is completely safe to engage in outdoor activities but still important to wear face mask and continue social distancing as well. There are lots of activities for kids to do in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee so make sure to help your kids find fun safe activities while keeping up with the social distancing regulations.

He reported hearing shots and then finding his father’s body lying near the front door. He then saw his sister outside, running away. She was taken into custody a short time later. She refused to speak with detectives. Home surveillance video after the shooting shows Trynity at the front door holding a handgun prior to fleeing. The gun has not been recovered. Otis Meadows, 49, died at the scene. No other persons were inside the home at the time of the shooting. There are two reports of domestic disputes involving Trynity and her father in which Trynity is listed as the suspect. In April, officers responded to the home after a heated verbal dispute. In November 2019, officers were told the teen had been throwing items around the house for no apparent reason. There were no injuries reported in either incident.

Protesters call for removal of Confederate monument June 6, 2020ÊÊAli Mason JACKSON, Tenn. — AÊpetitionÊto remove the Confederate monument in front of the Madison County Courthouse gathered over 4,500 signatures. “We think these Confederate monuments stand for symbols of hate, oppression, racism and treason,” said protest and petition organizer Iyad Abdi. That’s why Abdi, a Jackson resident, organized a petition and protest in front of the statue in downtown Jackson, which they want to see removed. “We think these monuments and these symbols of hate have no place in 2020, in our hometown, [or] in front of the courthouse because it’s incompatible with the notion of justice,” Abdi said. Protesters also honored George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other African-Americans who died while in police custody. One protester says removingÊ monuments and the Black Lives Matter movement are intertwined. “Black Lives Matter is about the advocation of basic rights for black people,” said protester Noah Stewart. Stewart says he believes that Confederate monuments celebrate people who wanted slavery. “It’s kind of wrong to have something symbolic like that in front of a huge legislative building,” Stewart said. “They don’t belong on government property. They don’t belong here for citizens to stand here and watch them,” Abdi said. “We believe that if someone does not want to tear them down, then it belongs in a museum, but not in our towns in the public,” Abdi said. According to aÊsurveyÊfrom the Tennessee Wars Commission, there are 14 Confederate monuments in West Tennessee, outside of Shelby County.

Publisher’s Point By Bill Marable Statues of Confederate ‘Warlords’ are being toppled from their defiled podiums at a number of historic cities and landmarks throughout the “proud South.” Collateral damage of the international outrage and protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis a few weeks a-back. Questions have surfaced again pertaining to Johnny Rebel statues posted on local parks and courthouse grounds. A simple of southern pride or southern white suppression of blacks, some would say that peacefully or not those statues have to go. Thinking Out Loud Why not remove all Confederate statues throughout the south and create a Confederate Historic Park in Parker’s Crossroads where all the statues could be showcased for those who wish to honor them? FYI - Parker’s Crossroads is where State Representative Steve McDaniels has raised state, local and federal considerations to add enhancements to the location where yearly Civil War re-enactments are held. Imagine what a boost that would be to tourism in the area. In order for the one statue to come down in a peaceful and respectful manner throughout the South it has to be a concerted effort spearheaded by a champion of the cause. Let us take this argument to the table as a viable alternative when we sit down before the committee that “regulates” the removal of those statues throughout the state. Oh y’all do know that there are levels to this thing. Several years ago, state legislators in Tennessee voted to form a special committee to oversee the removal and placement of those statues. Permission must be granted before any likeness of “Johnny Reb” or “Nathan Beford Forrest” can be legally removed from it’s post. Therefore egos must be stroked in the right way. As protesters all over the world march to the battlecry of “Justice” may the wave of retribution also sweep over the 31 AMERICAN states and the more than 700 Confederate monuments errected since the end of the Civil War. Over the weekend demonstrators in Richmond, VA toppled a confederate monument near Monument Avenue, the current resting place of the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Foresight would lead one to believe that taking the monuments down may do more to protect them than leaving them up. Peace! Contact: bmarable0@gmail.com

Our Sons Andrea Bond Johnson info@andreabondjohnsontn82.com Dear Bill, As a mother of two young men, I am horrified and heartbroken over the recent death of George Floyd. Like many of you, I watched the video as George Floyd took his last breaths, calling for his mother. I hurt for his family, my sons, my community and the entire country. I mourn with our community and this nation because we are living in very disturbing times. No city, county, or state is exempt. Just this week I read a Facebook post by James Barbee, a teacher from District 82, who happens to be African American. He shared a harrowing account of being racially profiled. He is one of the countless examples of what Black men experience, and this made me think about my sons.I want my sons to remember a mother who loved them and cared about others, a mother who demonstrated leadership, compassion, integrity and who stood up for “the least of these.” Like many black families, my husband and I have had “the talk” with our sons, explaining how to survive racial confrontations and bias within our society. Now is the time for all leaders to address racial inequities that link all communities across the country. Fairness and justice for all must be a conscious effort made by each of us I am running for State Representative of District 82 because I know together we can change the current reality, I will not pretend to have all the answers but silence is not an option. “RIDICULOUS AND RACIALLY MOTIVATED” DARYL HUBBARD CALLS “ARREST OF CITY COURT OFFICE MANAGER City of Jackson Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard has refereed to the arrest of City Court Office Manager “Shenile Ward” as being “ridiculous and racially motivated by the State.” Ward was indicted by the Madison County Grand Jury for two counts of forgery and two counts of official misconduct which are felonies. The indictment follows a State of Tennessee Comptrollers Office investigation into Hubbard’s office which alleged case information was not being reported to a state database as required by law according to the news By ‘Downtown’ Rickey Brown release by the state comptroller. The state also claims information was rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com intentionally inserted into the wrong fields in a computer system, concealing failure to appear cases from the state and hindering from promptly suspending drivers license. Hubbard argues the system lacks compassion and doesn’t do much to help people, when he appeared on several radio talk shows last Sunday morning. Shenile Ward State Investigator’s also alleged there were irregularities in the handling of a specific case Involving an Individual with two DUI cases, who was supposed to appear in Madison County Circuit Court. Hubbard said; “it was only a clerical error by his staff and not official misconduct or forgery as charged by the grand jury.” “The City Judge had ruled the individual indigent and staffers were trying to help the person get his license back in order to get a job,” said Hubbard. “My staff didn’t even know he was supposed by be in Circuit Court.” According to Hubbard, the irregularities could have been addressed in a phone call. “For staffers over there to file an audit complaint instead of just calling us is ridiculous,” said Hubbard. “The Court Clerk’s Office staff told investigators they believed people should not lose their license for failing to appear in court. The drivers license issue is only a part of a larger issue that city court staff consider a systematic problem ,” added Hubbard” Hubbard’s plea is a simple one; “people should be more compassionate. People lose their license for racial and economic reasons and if you think everybody who gets a traffic citation should go to jail, then I’m wrong.” Hubbard says citizens get fines and jail time for small driving offenses, the jail is overcrowded already and locking people up over “basically nothing” is just not right. In 2018,- a federal judge issued an injunction that stopped State of Tennessee from revoking drivers license for unpaid traffic fines amid a class action lawsuit. ÊBut an appellate court reversed that injunction earlier this year.

ÊAccording to the Commissioner officials are adjusting their revenue shortfall of up to $1.5 billion through the next budget year. Governor Lee’s administration is proposing another $284 million in budget cuts next year due to the economic fallout from the covid 19 pandemic.Ê This will be in addition to $397 million in recurring costs removed from the budget in March when the crisis was in its initial stages.Ê Cuts will include up to 12% reductions to departments, reductions to capital projects and maintenance funding, bonds for some capital projects and a get to be decided employee buy out initiative over the next two years.Ê The budget plan removes the remaining $58 million set aside for teacher pay raises. ÊThe Governor has proposed $117 million for the raise then $58 million of that was cut in the virus hampered budget update in March. This years budget will be challenging and difficult and the State will have to make some difficult hard decisions said Jackson”Ê

WHAT A HISTORIC YEAR I sincerely hope that students are keeping a journal to document the events of 2020. As a mentor I have provided a journal to every student I have had the privilege to work with. The middle school students in Humboldt at the Boys and Girls Club, along with others that have graduated this year. Teachers have stepped up their game once they had to go to “remote learning” due to the closing of schools because of COVID-19. I hope that students have taken full advantage of the free resources that have been made available for learning due to this pandemic. It appears as though most students are going to get some form of a graduation ceremony despite the coronavirus. As a board member of Bridging The Gap TN, we had the honor of presenting two graduates with scholarships this year to help offset the costs of their academic pursuits. Brooklyn Phillips was a graduate of JCM Early College High and earned an Associates Degree from JSCC in addition to her diploma. The other worthy candidate was TaNyia Simmons from Madison Academic. Brooklyn is planning to attend Xavier in the fall and TaNyia is planning to go to JSCC to get her prerequisites out of the way. Considering the circumstances this is a wise choice for both of these young ladies and I can foresee great accomplishments in their future.

Greg Hammond named chief of staff & public information director for JMCSS BY DAVID THOMAS _WNWS

Jackson-Madison County School Superintendentelect Dr. Marlon King has finalized his executive team by naming Greg Hammond to serve as Chief of Staff & Public Information for the system. According to a press release, Hammond, a former sports anchor and reporter at WBBJ, assumes the role after teaching broadcasting at South Side High School for the past 12 years.

BE PROUD OF WHERE YOU CAME FROM We will have a new Superintendent of Schools this fall and I am looking forward to getting an opportunity to meet Dr. Marlon King. He has hit the ground running despite overwhelming obstacles. He seems undaunted in initiating his plans of JMCSS this fall. With all the uncertainty in the nation today he is a much-needed stabilizing force that moves with conviction to do his job.Ê Leadership has not been lacking in Jackson during this healthcare crisis and I think the evidence of that is reopening businesses in town as the community has responded to call to be considerate of others. This was also on display as there were peaceful demonstrations in Jackson as Nashville and other metropolitan areas in the nation were subjected to rioting, looting, and curfews. We are far stronger together than we are when we work against each other to right an injustice. May that lead to a spirit of unity moving forward. Other than focusing on healthcare and finding a vaccine for the coronavirus we need to continue to work together on what we know is working. Education will never be the same but has never been more important for the future. “There will be revival. It is not a question of if, it is a question of when. We will bring back our students, faculty, and staff to our campuses, but it will not be the same.” ~Randy Boyd President UT System Governor Bill Lee is still pushing for Early Literacy funding in the upcoming budget so pay attention to where you representatives stand on that issue and how they vote. This is an election year so you can let them know how you feel about their decisions. Don Polley | Education contributorÊ(Contact don@donpolley.com) Home - Renters - Auto - Life - Business - Health

CITY EMPLOYEES HONORED

JOB OPPORTUNITY:

Credit: Sign placed on the boarded-up windows of Atlanta clothing staple, Wilbourn Sisters Boutique

WILBOURN SISTERS HIT BY PROTESTERS Black business owner’s spirit bruised but not broken after vandalism. By Dorjan Williams - 11Alive.com - June 1, 2020 ATLANTA — Multiple locations around the metro Atlanta area were impacted by looting and vandalism after protests Co-owners and operators, Janice turned from and Carolyn Wilbourn peaceful to violent this weekend. The protests sprung up in response to the deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville. The crowds that initially gathered around Friday afternoon in downtown Atlanta in the form of peaceful protest eventually shifted into unrest and violence as the evening stretched into the early hours of the night. Several businesses in and around Centennial Olympic Park were looted and vandalized, including the CNN center and the College Football Hall of Fame. Multiple other storefront businesses in the downtown area were also affected the following evening on Saturday. Many of whom were Black-owned and operated such as Atlanta clothing staple, Wilbourn Sisters Boutique. Co-owner and operator, Janice Wilbourn just so happened to be on location with a friend when her store was vandalized. She and her friend sought refuge in the basement as vandals smashed the front windows to her store located directly on Peachtree Rd. “It was a tragedy and it was a moment that I’ll never forget. I happened to be here that night, Saturday night when it happened at 11:30 pm,” Wilbourn tells 11Alive. By Monday morning, all the broken windows were boarded up and labeled with signs that read ‘Black Owned Business.’ While rattled by the experience of the vandalism this weekend, Wilbourn’s faith remains intact. She finished her interview with these simple words of encouragement to the community and her fellow business-owners - ‘Let go and let God.”
