Now three people are now locked up after police heard the gunfire on Beale and B.B. King. A man told police it all started when three people jumped him and then fired a gun at him Monday morning when he left a club.

GIRLFRIEND CHARGED AFTER SHOOTING MAN IN ARM,ÊGROIN MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The woman who called police to say she shot her boyfriend Tuesday morning has been charged. According to jail records, Valencia Smith was charged with aggravated assault after she returned to her Pawnee home and was confronted by her boyfriend.

June 5, 2018 Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The new leader of the Tennessee Highway Patrol has assumed his new role with the agency, succeeding Col. Tracy Trott, who retired after 40 years in the post. Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner David W. Purkey announced Monday that Col. Dereck Stewart was named to the position. He is the first African-American to lead the highway patrol. Stewart has been in law enforcement for 30 years and was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 2011. He has been responsible for the agency’s daily operations for the last seven years.

Guest included Olympic medalist Kevin Young who was a UCLA standout and Male athlete of the year. MAN CHARGED WITH DUI AFTER CRASH NEAR BOYS & GIRLS CLUB June 5, 2018 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — A man was arraigned Tuesday in Jackson City Court on a DUI charge after police say he crashed his car Monday into a utility pole and fence near a local Boys & Girls Club. Cedric Jones, 38, of Jackson is charged with driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license. The wreck occurred around 4 p.m. Monday along the Highway 70 Bypass near Lexington Avenue. According to court documents, the officer who responded to the crash smelled alcohol. When asked if he had been drinking, police say Jones said he’d had four beers. There were three empty beer cans in the car, according to an affidavit. Jones agreed to conduct a field sobriety test and was determined to be driving under the influence, according to police. Jones’ bond was set at $4,000.ÊHe is due back in court at 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 28.

2 WANTED IN WEAKLEY COUNTY DRUG RAID May 29, 2018 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. –The Weakley County Sheriff’s Office and the Martin Police Department are searching for two people after a drug raid at a Martin home. According to a news release, investigators from both departments searched an apartment on Church Street Friday. During the search, investigators found five and a half ounces of crystal methamphetamine, digital scales, baggies and $1,200 in cash. The release says neither of the residents, identified as Ereo Scates, 28, and Laporsha Spinks, 25, were at the apartment during the search. Both are wanted on warrants for possession of methamphetamine with intent to resale and possession of drug paraphernalia. The release says Scates should be considered dangerous. Both have ties to Jackson. The release says Scates has additional ties to Bolivar. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to contact the Weakley County Sheriff’s Office at (731) 364-5454.

Woman charged in lottery ticket thefts May 29, 2018 - JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman accused of stealing lottery tickets from a West Jackson store appears before a judge, Tuesday. Lorna Keith, 30, is accused of stealing more than $1,000 in lottery tickets from a convenience store on Airways Boulevard. Court documents say Keith worked at the store. The owner of the store told police he saw Keith on surveillance video taking the tickets during her shift, according to court documents. Keith remains in custody at the Madison County Criminal Justice Complex in lieu of $10,000 bond.

He told officers Sierra Howell, Joseph Beadle and Cassandra Arnold followed him to the intersection and beat him up. He says he tried to fight back in self-defense, striking Howell. That’s when the man said Howell grabbed a gun out of her purse and Beadle snatched it from her, opening fire. The victim dodged the bullets but the door of a car passing through the intersection was hit twice. Officers say Arnold tried to ditch the gun, but didn’t seem to realize SkyCop cameras caught everything. Howell and Beadle are now facing an aggravated assault charge and Arnold is charged with tampering with evidence.

GIRLFRIEND CHARGED AFTER SHOOTING MAN IN ARM,ÊGROIN MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The woman who called police to say she shot her boyfriend Tuesday morning has been charged. According to jail records, Valencia Smith was charged with aggravated assault after she returned to her Pawnee home and was confronted by her boyfriend. Initial reports indicated the woman told police she was attacked and opened fire in self defense, but officers later noted in their report they both got into “a tussle” resulting in Smith reaching into her purse – which was still on her shoulder- and pulling out a gun. She reportedly shot the man once in the arm and again in the groin. In all, police said Smith fired five times. She then went outside and waited for police to arrive. They noted in their police report the two had been together for two years. The male subject was taken to the Regional Medical Center in critical condition. It’s still unclear if he will face charges.
NASHVILLE – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, working jointly with the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and multiple other local, state and federal agencies, has resulted in the arrest of a man who was the subject of a two-day manhunt in Dickson County. At the request of 23rd District Attorney General Ray Crouch, on May 30th, TBI Special Agents, along with these partner agencies, responded to investigate the on-duty homicide of Dickson County Sergeant Daniel Baker. Initial information indicates that shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, a resident reported a suspicious vehicle on Sam Vineyard Road. Sergeant Baker responded to that call. After a period of time, when the deputy failed to check in, attempts were made to track him and his vehicle via GPS. The deputy’s vehicle was ultimately located in a wooded area off Bear Creek Valley Road, about two miles away from the location of the initial call. Sergeant Baker was found inside the vehicle, deceased. During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that Steven Wiggins was responsible for the deputy’s death. On that same day, Wiggins was added to the TBI’s Top 10 Most Wanted list, and remained on the run for two days. Around 7:15 a.m. Friday, a trooper with the Tennessee Highway Patrol was patrolling an area along the Hickman/ Dickson County line when he spotted Wiggins on Stinson Road near a tree line. The trooper took Wiggins into custody without incident. He was transported to a Dickson County hospital for a medical evaluation. On Friday evening, Steven Joshua Wiggins (DOB 12/19/86) was charged with one count of First Degree Murder. He was booked into the Dickson County Jail before being transported to the Davidson County Jail. Wiggins is being held without bond.

News Conference Held In West Tennessee As State Lawmakers Work On Fighting Opioid Abuse JACKSON, Tenn. — A news conference was held Wednesday in Jackson as state lawmakers work on fighting opioid abuse. Recommendations made by a task force created in 2017 have now been passed to help the state better fight the opioid epidemic. The task force is also increasing the amount of Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents in our state to stop the flow of illegal drugs. State representative and Republican gubernatorial candidate Beth Harwell tells us how easily people can be affected by opioids. “About the sixth day, it literally starts changing the brain, and people easily can become addicted after four or five days of opioid use,”ÊHarwell said. According to Harwell, opioid prescriptions are now down by 7 percent from 2012.

JACKSON, Tenn. —ÊThe Grant Center at Union University was full of emotion this afternoon as the American Red Cross honored local heroes. This year, many of the volunteers focused their work on fire safety. “I help you get your dentures. If you took your dentures out before you went to bed and your house burned down, you have no way to chew. So all of those things, although they may seem small, make a difference in somebody’s life,” Sue Vegors said. Vegors, a nurse and Red Cross volunteer, is this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. Meaghan Smith was honored as this year’s Volunteer of the Year. “I’ve also been involved in some serious fire cases, and I really enjoyed helping those that are affected by fires. I believe that they all live in our hearts after we have helped them,” Smith said. Country singer Darryl Worley, who was honored as this year’s Humanitarian of the Year, talked about the Franks family and shared a song in memory of those who died. Tim Franks was recognized during the program for his work with fire safety. Franks and his wife lost their son, Jamie, daughter-in-law Robyn, and grandchildren 9-year-old Brody and 3-year-old Josie, in a fire in January. “It’s very difficult to be here today and to hear that story all over again, and to see the family suffer through. They’ve been honored here today and their story has been told in a very special way,” Worley said. “The Humanitarian Award, for me, is probably the best thing that anyone could ever give me,” Worley said.Ê“We’re just here to help one another out, and that’s what the humanitarian thing is all about.” The Red Cross also recognized Dr. Mike Revelle as the Uniformed Hero of the Year.

Among her many assignments, she served as Chief of Navy and Marine Corps Personnel at Special Operations Command; Director of Human Resources for Recruiting Command; and Head Human Resources Detailer for Navy Personnel Command. She also served as Commanding Officer of two commands: Tampa Military Entrance Processing Station and Navy Recruiting District Nashville. After screening for Major Command, Voresa served as Commodore for Navy Recruiting Region West, where she was responsible for half of the Navy’s Recruiting Mission. Her territory encompassed 28 States (including Alaska and Hawaii) plus Japan and Guam. After 30 years of wearing the cloth of our great Nation, Voresa retired in August 2013.
